Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

I argued with a hun that FPLG got them liquidated. If the man who does not do walking away had not got them humped out of Europe they probably would have survived to the end of the season without administration.

“What is apparent in all the point-by-point resistance to the consequences and impending penalties incurred by the oldco, and the intricate difficulties in accommodating the newco, is that this isn’t about sport. It’s about a group of people with a desperate psychological need to be associated with a football team which is dominant and successful and thus makes them feel successful too: a team to which they can also attach their sub-culture of religious and political sectarianism which, however shallow and ignorant, satisfies personal inadequacy. Thus the lack of remorse; thus the outrage at the legitimate actions of the football authorities, and the opinions of other clubs and their supporters; thus the complaints about ‘having been punished enough’. For them, a ‘fair’ treatment of the oldco/newco predicament would be exceptional, special treatment, to allow swift restoration of the warm glow of success, the weekly opportunities to sing the songs of hate and feel part of something big and important. The crisis has revealed the real magnitude of this sickness, this cancer in Scottish society: it is to be hoped that it will be removed and forever discouraged from return. “

  9. I agree that Wattie doesn’t get the credit he deserved for leading the forces of darkness into oblivion. When they were stoney broke and got dumped out of Europe by Kaunas but still spent £12m on Mendes, Jelavic, Lafferty et al I knew for certain the writing was on the wall.

I’m not saying Neil shouldn’t be careful, just I wouldn’t exagerate Smith’s tactical genius. For me, he got desperately luck one season.

  22. scotlands shame on

HAs anyone in the media attacked fplg’s comments yet?

Has someone pointed out yet that rangrs have not yet been punished. they have simply faced the same sanctions all teams in their situation have received, put down to bottomleague, ask livi and gretna fans. 10 point deduction last season? thats not punishment, thats the sanction ALL teams receive for going into admin. Nobody is picking on them, in fact I dont recall teams having to vote if gretna airdire livi would go all the way down or just to the 1st div.

The thing is all these teams were poorly run and went to wall or as good as ( as Dundee have proved if you simply take your medicine and get on with it you can recover) however to my knowledge they did not do anything illegal or bring game into disreptue. (for example they paid their PAYE)

Now we have to wait for FTT and we have to wait for SFA/SPL whoever the hell it is enquiry into the shenanigans over the last decade or so. Once these come to pass then the team formerly known as rangers need to be punished for these guilty acts. Who knows some of the guilty punishments may not just be on the football side of things.

So dont let anyone tell you enough is enough and they have been punished enough, they havent been punished at all yet.

Had to explain this to an elderly dundee utd fan yesterday who thought that they had been punished and people were now just out for blood – had to put him right on that!

They were Rangers, no one liked them – and now it is coming back to bite them!
