New manager needs to meet players before the summer

262

A team filled with a high number of loaners and players entering the final year of their contracts with intentions of moving to England is not an ideal squad for the new manager to inherit.  There is, however, benefit to him walking into a morale-depleted Lennoxtown than starting after 15 May, when players leave for their summer conversations with their agents.

Even if the new manager is resigned to losing those entering the final year of their contracts, with Champions League qualification starting on 21 July, he will likely have to work with them for some important games.

By now, Celtic will have a very clear idea of whom they want to appoint.  They also know the cost to delaying much longer.  It would take an exceptional candidate to induce me to wait beyond the end of the season.  Players should ideally leave for the summer with an idea of what will be expected of them between now and the transfer window closing.  This, more than supporter sentiment or season ticket renewals is reason to make the decision now.

    Hope we are not still being held on a string by the preferred candidate.

    ‘It would take an exceptional candidate to induce me to wait beyond the end of the season’ – is this code for ‘we should accept a journeyman as long as he can get in with 10days before the summer holibags begin’ ?

    So we want a guy – but he’s hemmin and hawin’ – let’s settle for a less-than-box-office draw, is that it?

    Despite game showings, we have good players with potential to be re-ignited under imaginative, insightful leadership – but we’ve (and you’ve) known this since afore Xmas, Paul.

    Just spit it out man; are we getting Target A or Target B ?

  3. Go tell the Spartim on

    White smoke soon…………. or just a wish for an announcement this week. The noise from Celtic about targeting height and presence surely implies someone at the club is making such decisions? Of course alternative theory is available ?

    Seasoned Kerrydale-ologists interpret this as follows;

    Celtic still want Howe.

    However our Board are getting antsy about risk of Howe playing for time and a EPL job.

    P67 is equally antsy but still accepts Howe is worth the wait which will be at least another two weeks.

    P67 more ready to acknowledge the damage this will do next season’s preparation than our Board.

    Lawwell-esque behaviour of promising players their move after European qualifiers still the identified strategy.

    I hope the new manager doesn’t bother his shirt, meeting any of the wantaways. They undermined a colossal collapse, that might take more than one short summer to fix. All of the loan players should have been excluded weeks and ago, and certainly, for the remaining two games.

    I sincerely hope it is Howe and that he is in contact with players/agents outwith those who are presently at Celtic.

    Current players who are committed to Celtic will be on the same page as the new man anyway and those who are not are hardly likely to be busting a gut for us in the CL qualifiers .

    Is there any club in the world – other than Celtic – that has ever made as much of a meal of appointing a new Manager – or any other business appointing to any other senior post for that matter?

    I understand careful, full consideration, etc., but this is just feeling more bizarre by the day.

    “…By now, Celtic will have a very clear idea of whom they want to appoint…” !!!!

    The new manager will be probably quite happy to see the deck cleared before he signs in. Sunday (and to the larger degree) the season has shown how much the jersey is valued by the players in situ ie not very. Good riddance to bad rubbish and all that. New Manager needs new players and we need both sorted pronto.

    Vague point but for Scott Brown to come out and apologise for bad performance No.45 of the season was another nonsense. He’s leaving and should have grown a set and laid bare whats went wrong, inc him.

    Is it possible that many other clubs take just as long but , as we have little or no interest in those clubs, we are not aware of how lengthy their negotiations are?

    Maybe they are waiting until they finish the review of Neil and his management team? Any day now, surely………..

  12. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

    And I agree – making a decision now just so that a Plan B manager can have a chance to talk to players before they leave for their holidays is utter nonsense.

    Say we can appoint Plan A manager on May 20th – I’m assuming we are aware of things like telephones, Zoom calls, MS Teams – managers can talk to players after May 15th.

    If we were prepared to wait six months – it would be adding stupidity onto incompetence to suddenly decide we can’t wait for two more weeks for Plan A.

    Absent an all-encompassing Master-plan we have yet to see any evidence of, we seem to be all over the place.

    We are World Class at waiting, if there was a special prize for the club who can out-wait every other club, we would win it hands down, we probably hold the world record for waiting for a new manager, the John McGinn, transfer saga, now that was waiting at its very best.

  15. Do posters really believe that many of our players were not trying?

    Throughout my lengthy but not particularly successful footballing `career`,I can recall the occasional, childish sulk leading to some players not trying but those were few and far between.

    Bolingoli-gate;

    SFA;

    Covid;

    Referees;

    Unsuccesful loans and transfers.

    For me, these are all more pertinent than players supposedly not trying.

  16. The skin the board have in the game is £3-4m in bonuses and a few nice hotel stays. They have been content to settle for a reduced bonus as the result of EL participation and are happy enough to swap the fancy hotels in Barcelona and Paris with suitable accommodation in Prague or Rennes . Anyone that thinks these parasites are going to start caring now hasn’t been paying attention.

    Can we?

    Personally, I am only really aware of changes at other clubs after they have happened and have no idea how long any of their important business actually took from outset to conclusion.

  18. I think it will be interesting to see what our strategic business model is going forward. For years we invested in younger players, with the view of profit, and bought an established player once in a while. A few loans as well.

    The last 2 seasons bucked the trend by spending pretty big on first team ready players.

    Personally, i think a mixture of those policies is what we need. If Rodgers had turned over the squad a bit more, we may not have got into this situation. I’d still love to know what went on there

  19. The idea that the board would put football reasons above financial isn’t consistent with anything they have done previously.

    I like the idea of Howe but fear with such a spineless board he will be like a rabbit in the headlights. More Mowbray than Rodgers if you get me.

  20. If, indeed, the new Manager/Coach has had interviews with players via phone/zoom etc. then it would be out there that he was coming. Players and their agents would be busting a gut to let their media pals know in order to get some brownie points with the said media. No, nobody has declared themselves yet and we are still in limbo! por cierto.

  21. Hopefully, the invisible chairman Iain Bankier will also go, once our glacier overhaul eventually concludes.

    The answer to your question is a resounding YES.

    Makes perfect sense, Paul, but I’ll say one thing – I don’t want Christie or Edouard at Celtic Football Club a day longer than necessary.

    Indeed.

    Our last “competitive” game this season is on Saturday 15 May @ 12:30.

    Traditionally players are “let out early” after the last game (despite having contractual commitments to, at least 30 June).

    So, to get the renaissance moving the new manager simply needs a face-to-face with the entire squad at Lennox town in the next 10 days ….

    – “I’m the boss”

    – “here is the vision”

    – “here’s what is expected of you”

    – “off you go to rest and reflect”

    I presume we have a couple of candidates who could be equally competent in role?

    Or, have we put all of our eggs on one basket?

    Between shower gate and now this protracted torture, we’re really not very good at appointing managers.

    As has been posted already, Celtic seem uniquely incompetent at this.
