Newco cannon fodder plans

804

While I was busy telling one of my first bosses how much money we were going to make in a year or two, he made a comment which has remained with me since, “If you don’t make some sales next month, we’ll not be around to find out if you’re right.”

Plans for 2022 don’t mean a fart to a company which is haemorrhaging cash, billionaire funders, nomads and auditors, all the consequence of a two year war of attrition as newco Rangers tried to fight off an insurrection.

There are literally thousands of metrics you can use to compare the prospects of football clubs but let me draw your eye to a couple, which will give you real insight into the future.

Last season Celtic had 475 “full time equivalents” in employment, 318 people in non-football roles and a further 157 in football operations (players, coaches etc.).  If the average pay of those 318 non-football full-time staff was £25k (I doubt it’s this low), their combined wage bill would be just below £8m.  Celtic’s total annual wage bill was £37.766m, total operating expenses were £59.885m.

If you want to win the Scottish Premiership, this is what you’re competing against.

Newco Rangers announced operating expenses (before amortisation) of £15.684m for the six months to 31 December, which included £6.7m wages, covering both football and non-football staff.  If the figures for the second half of the year are consistent with the first that would give them around £31m income and a £13.4m spend wages.  Income is around half Celtic’s expenses and wages a fraction of Celtic’s

What newco need is tens of millions of pounds of investor cash, the £50m Dave King spoke about ‘when in opposition’ is not an overestimate.

Anything they say before “Here is the £50m investment we need” is there to take attention away from the fact that they haven’t said “Here is the £50m investment we need”.  When they say that, they’re in the game, until then, they’re cannon fodder.  When they stop talking about the £50m needed, they know it’s not coming.

Rangers have confirmed a transfer warchest for next year on the same day legendary Captain Lee McCulloch agree’s to renew his contract so he can lead McCall’s side in the forthcoming campaign. The 55 year old talismanic Captain will once again rally the troops in their battle to wrestle the title away from arch rivals Celtic. This is a stunning statement of intent from the new board led by lifelong Rangers fan, the South African gazillionaire David Cunningham King.

  4. Mackay-Steven: Our target is to win every game

AS Celtic’s international players begin reporting back to Lennoxtown this week, the focus will very quickly switch to domestic matters and the trip to Paisley this Friday night to face St Mirren.

Having established a five-point lead at the top of the Premiership, and with a game in hand over Aberdeen, the Hoops will be determined to cement their position as league leaders.

And while Gary Mackay-Steven is looking forward to getting back in action this Friday night, he told this week’s Celtic View that it doesn’t matter who Celtic play or what their position in the league is – the Hoops must aim to win all their remaining matches if they are to clinch the title.

He said in an exclusive interview: “You can go into games and focus too much on the opponents in terms of where they are in the league or how well they’re doing, or not doing, and I think the best thing to do is just focus on yourself.

“If you do that and focus on doing the right things off the park in the build up to games then you give yourself the best chance. There are no benefits to focusing on what another team is or isn’t doing so we just have to focus on ourselves and if we play the way we can and have everyone fit and raring to go them I’m sure we’ll get a positive result.”

And a win at St Mirren could kick-start the run-in to the title in the best way possible. The Celts face a busy schedule of games over the coming month with six fixtures crammed into three weeks, including the Scottish Cup semi-final match against Inverness Caley Thistle and the game in hand against Partick Thistle on April 8.

It all adds up for a tense finish to the league before the split but Mackay Steven is convinced the Hoops will have enough in the tank to navigate the obstacles laid out before them and continue the chase for the treble.

“Every game is massive,” he said. “The recent Dundee United games were big but they’re out the way now and thankfully we did well in them but these games are huge as well.

“We want to get the gap between ourselves and second place a little bit bigger and we can do that by doing things right in the league. The games are coming thick and fast again and we need to be at it but I’m sure we will be and our next goal is to solidify first place in the league and win the cup games.

“I’m enjoying the challenge. It’s great to be in a winning team and a team that everyone wants to beat and it is great being at a club of this magnitude and having that to deal with. I’m just trying to use it to my advantage.

“You dream about coming to a big club and Celtic is an absolutely massive club. I’m just trying to roll with it and keep a smile on my face.

“The treble is the big aim for this season but we’ll take it one game at a time. The boys did great the other week getting the first step of that and obviously it would be massive. It’s not been done for quite a number of years because it’s so hard to do but there’s a real belief that we have the squad capable of doing it if we can be at it every game.

“The manager drills it into us how important it is to train hard and just focus on the next game and not to look too far into the future. Certainly it would be amazing for everyone.”

I’m hoping to go to the game in Paisley on Friday night but because it’ll be me, the wife, the 2 Bhoys and the oldest Bhoy’s girlfriend then it will have to be in amongst the St Mirren supporters. I’m going to go up on Friday afternoon after I land and try and get the tickets. I’m not sure if I’ll be successful as I believe they have a rigorous test in place to make sure you you come from Paisley – if your arms measure more than 18 inches in length, your pockets measure less than 10 inches in depth and you don’t have one continuous eyebrow (or monobrow as it is known locally) then you will be refused tickets. It’s not looking good from where I stand, that and being a ‘Frew man.

When in opposition you can say anything you want, because no-one can call you out on your opinions-dressed-up-as-facts sound bites.

The corollary is that when you get into office you blame the mess you inherited for being inept at implementing anything you promised when in opposition.

    King-Murray is doing precisely that.

“It was a big bhoy and he ran away mister.”

“It’s far worse than we were led to believe.”

“Unlike our predecessors, we will be honest with the supporters.”

I remember a guy starting in a job in a place I worked. He spent the first six months reviewing and getting to grips with the job, the next six months blaming the previous incumbent for the mess he was having to work through, and the next six months struggling to come up with an excuse for him doing a bad job. He left before the next six months elapsed.

Who will be next people to keep the seats warm? That’s easy, just watch out for whoever starts sniping at the King Murray stewardship of the good ship Brokeback. They are then “in opposition” and are lining themselves up for the job of seat warmers.

Or should that just be wahrmers?

It’s because I’ve seen what their unfairness has done to Scottish football and Celtic that I stick with Res12.

In that respect it’s not unfairness it moved from there into downright lies deceit and cheating. I’ve seen the e mails and the documents.

I think I know more about what we are up against than you do.

It is the lack of principle in the game that will not even look at the evidence that allows it to become the mess it has.

That TRFC or RFC lack principle is what principled folk (like you and I ) cannot understand. It is to everyone’s benefit to have a principled ethical code of behaviour including theirs.

It’s not that I’m looking for them to become principled, the scorpion will always sting the fox on whose head it sits crossing the river, it’s to protect Celtic and it’s supporters from that unprincipled mind that makes Res12 important.

    I’m surprised that needed explaining.

When the full Res12 story comes out you’ll be glad it has been pursued with tenacity.

Liam Henderson joins Rosenborg on loan

By: Newsroom Staff on 31 Mar, 2015 17:12

LIAM Henderson has joined Norwegian side, Rosenborg, on loan until this summer. The 18-year-old midfielder, who has made 22 appearances for the Celtic first-team and scored two goals since making his debut last season, his relishing the new experience and joins the club on the final day of the Norwegian transfer window.

Rosenborg manager, Kare Ingebrigtsen, has welcomed the move, describing the young Celt as “one of Scotland’s greatest talents and a very exciting player.”

Ingebrigtsen spoke to Celtic boss, Ronny Deila, and midfielder Stefan Johansen, about the player, and added: “Liam has huge potential and both Ronny and Stefan speak very highly about him.

“He is a young, ambitious, hard-working boy with a strong will to win and experience of playing in front of 60,000 spectators, so he knows what the pressure of expectation is.”

Everyone at Celtic wishes Liam all the very best during his loan spell with Rosenborg.

You don’t seem to get it.

We buy cheap and sell high by developing players through good coaching and giving them a stage to show how far they have developed.

I would like to keep our Wanyamas and Fosters but we have no say in that until we are wage competitive with where they want to go.

Over time the standard of who we buy might be nearer the already developed point that we sell at but we are not at that stage yer.

So to replace say VVD at the even half the fee we get and half the wages he gets is not going to happen.

We are not in or are likely to be in for foreseeable the ready made market.

We have a policy that has been adapted from experience that seems to be working. Buying less duds, recruiting better prospects.

We should measure success in part not just by the money or titles but the number of duds we bring in. More than three is not successful in that particular respect.
