Newco cannon fodder plans

804

While I was busy telling one of my first bosses how much money we were going to make in a year or two, he made a comment which has remained with me since, “If you don’t make some sales next month, we’ll not be around to find out if you’re right.”

Plans for 2022 don’t mean a fart to a company which is haemorrhaging cash, billionaire funders, nomads and auditors, all the consequence of a two year war of attrition as newco Rangers tried to fight off an insurrection.

There are literally thousands of metrics you can use to compare the prospects of football clubs but let me draw your eye to a couple, which will give you real insight into the future.

Last season Celtic had 475 “full time equivalents” in employment, 318 people in non-football roles and a further 157 in football operations (players, coaches etc.).  If the average pay of those 318 non-football full-time staff was £25k (I doubt it’s this low), their combined wage bill would be just below £8m.  Celtic’s total annual wage bill was £37.766m, total operating expenses were £59.885m.

If you want to win the Scottish Premiership, this is what you’re competing against.

Newco Rangers announced operating expenses (before amortisation) of £15.684m for the six months to 31 December, which included £6.7m wages, covering both football and non-football staff.  If the figures for the second half of the year are consistent with the first that would give them around £31m income and a £13.4m spend wages.  Income is around half Celtic’s expenses and wages a fraction of Celtic’s

What newco need is tens of millions of pounds of investor cash, the £50m Dave King spoke about ‘when in opposition’ is not an overestimate.

Anything they say before “Here is the £50m investment we need” is there to take attention away from the fact that they haven’t said “Here is the £50m investment we need”.  When they say that, they’re in the game, until then, they’re cannon fodder.  When they stop talking about the £50m needed, they know it’s not coming.

We might make the same mistakes again ut signs are good that we are learning from past mistakes.

RD was not recruited on anyone’s whim. He was recruited to deal with the market conditions in which Celtic have to operate.

I am encouraged not just by how that appointment seems to be working but also by the purchase of Armstrong and G M Steven and it’s timing.

Ready for CL qualifying not introduced to team mates in the dressing room plus of course proven ability in the PL.

  2. I support the idea of giving lads like Liam Henderson experience by loaning them out but I agree with Burgas Hoops, I hope there is an understanding with Rosenborg that we expect him to be playing regularly.

Callum McGregor did benefit from his spell at Notts County but after initially impressing his performances fell off, it shows just how hard it is to bring really top players through the Youth ranks

  3. If Liam Henderson were being farmed out to a Championship team I’d be thinking he is not going to make it.

However given RD seems to think a spell in Norway will help that indicates this loan is just part of a sensible player development cycle.

I think it will all work out well.

One thing that definitely gets under the Huns’ skin is Timmy being well ahead of the game in all things Sevco.

Just reading back, yet again proves we have some very knowledgeable punters, and not just the likes of P67 or Phil. It’s hardly a boast to say I know much more about it than any Sevcodger I work with.

If the scandal happened 20 years ago, the masonic cabal would have made sure much of it went straight under the carpet, hmrc or not.

The timing of this blog coming into being could not have been better.

Now, if King, Murray, Green or any other shyster as much as Lionel Barts, we’ve got very clever guys on the case before the whiff has gone.

    How it must hurt.

Stv news headlines mention the £500,000 cost to nufc if sevco get promoted

Sitting here thinking .. Back in the rangers / minty days they would have waved that amount off as chicken feed

Must admit to being surprised at the Liam Henderson loan. I’d have thought he’d be required for cover at the very least, in the treble run in. We’re not that well covered for orthodox defensive / offensive midfielders.

The bigger picture is he will gain a lot more from regular game time in Norway than occasional appearances for us. We are well covered in the attacking three midfield positions and Mulgrew’s return gives cover for Brown/Bitton.

As for the potential Geordie 1st team Christmas nite oot on the Toon fund just borrow it from yon incubator company that has all the bad debts then just ignore it !!

Mulgrew will be back so he will back up Brown/Bitton. Don’t agree that Mulgrew should be playing there but the manager must be happy with the cover he has in central midfield (plus Henderson hasn’t played there under RD).

Looking longer term playing regularly for Rosenborg over next three months is better than development team games with occasional first team substitute appearance.

He’ll be ready to push for a first team place come the pre season games and first CL game in July.

Auldheid. You say you know more about the goings on at Rangers than I do fair enough fella I will accept what you say. However, how long do we have to wait until what you know is made known to the Celtic support ? It is exactly this type of secrecy that resolution 12 was I thought going to expose the truth however, that appears not to be the case. You I presume have an agreement with others not to reveal what you know and yet tell others you are more knowledgeable than they are.I at one time would have advocated that we should have a supporter on the Celtic board but unfortunately I think the weakness of the argument is that once the supporter gets on the board he/she is no longer just a supporter but becomes a board member and is shackled by rules in your case your not on the board but appear to be shackled if im wrong please accept my apology but it certainly looks like that. H.H.

  22. Hi Paul67,

You seem rather underwhelmed by threat of the new Clubs’ meteoric rise.

One thing that struck me from seeing the interims was the way the Board had stemmed the loses from last Season.

In fact if it wasn’t for the boycott the Club could well be on an even keel, so a big thanks to all involved.

Noticed also, if they hit the big time they will be forced to pay a £0.5m bonus to NU for helping them achieve it.

Got me thinking, when we get the treble will we be forced to pay bonuses, we should be told.

    Hail Hail

I am pondering over the reasons for the popularity of the St Mirren game on Friday.

As always, there will be more than one reason but one I am hoping is included is that many supporters are now buying into the Ronny Revolution and not only enjoying the footballing fare on offer but feeling the birth of excitement for the future.

    ——

It’s probably more to do with the manner in which the tickets are distributed Jim.

St Mirren deal directly with away supporters and not Celtic directly. This means that the vast majority of tickets are issued in bulk to registered Celtic supporters clubs.

Theoretically this sounds great. However, it has 3 drawbacks.

    1) some buses end up with additional tickets even if they don’t actually need them.

    2) non registered clubs rarely if ever receive an allocation.

    and

    3) few, if any, supporters who aren’t members of any bus and who usually get tickets directly from Celtic will be allocated tickets. Really this is because it’s much cheaper for St Mirren to post out 50 tickets in one envelope that 25 lots of 2 tickets.

We only have 10 league games to play (+2 cup?) – LH is unlikely to get many (if any) starts during our run-in. Rosenberg are about to k.o. their season – if LH has been signed by them (akin to Jason) then he gets 11 starts before our pre-season.

Sounds good pre-planning on RD’s part?
