Newco find new ways to traumatise themselves

452

Scott Bain had little chance with either Newco goal yesterday, but made several flawless interventions in in the game: diving out from his goal to hold a cross in the first half, saving when the hopeless Morelos was clean through on him, grasping a free kick just under his crossbar and punching the ball out of play.

His game will most be remembered for the added time save from Windass before he collected the ball off the post when Morelos showed all the composure of Ibrox strikers before him, like Sebo and van Vossen.

Jozo Simunovic scarcely broke sweat before his 57th minute red card.  There could have been an earlier red for a two footed lunge on Tom Rogic, and I don’t believe there was intent behind Jozo’s action, but it was a red card.

‘What happened to Dedryck?’ remains an open question.  The Belgian international picked himself up from a bomb scare first season to become an integral part of the Invincibles, but after gifting possession for the opening Newco goal, and being turned by Morelos at the second, he will have been the most relieved man in Glasgow at full time yesterday.

Tom Rogic’s goal was incredible, not only the quality of the 27-yard strike, but the way he created the opening for himself.  No one else in the Scottish game could have scored that goal.  Some players hide when they are a goal down in a hostile environment, Tom stepped up when we needed it.

Moussa Dembele scored one, got an assist and led the line well.  His goal exposed some inept defending.  A Scott Bain pass to Scott Brown allowed the captain to launch a long ball with his first touch, Moussa controlled with his head before lobbing the keeper.

This goal came after a period of intense Celtic pressure on the Newco goal, which forced eight corners but didn’t create the breakthrough.  When Newco pressed forward they lost concentration.

Like Rogic, Moussa is a player who comes alive on big stage.

With 25% of the game remaining, the scores level and being a man down, Brendan Rodgers swapped a midfielder for a striker.  Without a right back on the park, I didn’t expect Forrest to be sacrificed, but it was a ballsy, match winning, play.

Odsonne Eduard didn’t hang around. 100 seconds after taking to the field, he scored what proved to be the winner.  Think back for a moment to the occasions Brendan played Odsonne with Moussa and Leigh Griffiths on the bench.  It was clear Odsonne was still learning his craft, but without those development opportunities he would not have been yesterday’s match winner.

The final drama was provided by Windass’ shot, Bain’s save and that miss from Morelos.  The ball sat perfectly for the striker four yards out, but as we so often see from one footed players, what was an easy tap-in with his left foot, bounced off the outside of his right boot in the wrong direction.

All he needed to do was hold his left foot against the ball to equalise.  How do players get to that level so reluctant to use their weaker foot?

Twice coming from behind, then scoring a winner with 10 men, is a memorable way to win any game.  At Ibrox, it was delicious.  Newco collapsed like a pack of cards, at home, with a man advantage.  They continue to find innovative ways to traumatise themselves.

Quite often one mistake leads to another leads to another – eg a player not tracking a run, another gets dragged out of position then this leaves a space somewhere else.

I sometimes think we lack leadership and communication at the back. If you leave your man make sure you have passed him on to someone else.

Agreed, yes Bain inspires confidence and should keep his place. I think BR always intended to use Edouard at some point yesterday and it worked out pretty well!

  6. Two things to come out from yesterday for me.

First is injuries. The impact of injuries on results is underestimated by some supporters . It’s not just the time getting fit. It’s the time to get match fit and get your touch right. Dembele is a perfect example of this. He could not have hit that pass to Odsone in his first few games back. Not even sure he would have got the lob right for his goal.

Next as injury evidence is Tom Rogic. Out for months so a drop in creativity. Add in Griffiths struggling with injury and the reason for draws or uninspiring play is obvious.

Second is the refereeing. Colum has to be asked why he missed 2 jersey pulls on Forrest early doors, why two footer was not addressed and why when at 3 2 Celtic’s two front men won the ball in what looked a fair tussle and dangerous positions he blew up once for a foul on Ntcham? and yellow carded Dembele.

Not sure if yellow cards can be appealed but Celtic should be asking questions as well as gathering stats on how long or how many fouls an opponent makes before a yellow is shown.

Something isn’t right in the state of Scottish football that makes it very important that the SFA Compliance Officer does not become part of the problem and not a solution.

  10. The final Glasgow Derby should be the 2nd last game of the season. There is no chance that with just 2 games to go the title will not be won. We will surely have at least a 7 point lead at that stage?

Just finished clearing the drains and gutters of gunge accumulated over winter. It was very satisfying and seemed fitting after yesterday’s result sluiced the rubbish concerning a “title challenge” that has cluttered the msm recently.

if they’re going to have a ‘league split’ with a computer deciding the last 5 games depending on league positions(and other factors), then it should be the random date that the computer decides. But this is Scotland, and we wouldnt want to be goading the narrow minded zombies into violence by winning a football match!

A sclaffy Morelos miss away from another Brendan draw vs Murty, and you’d think it was 1967 again!

*we drew 2-2 there in ’67 Kev where a sclaffed roger hynd (nephew of the Shanks) shot gave them a fortuitous draw unlike more or less yesterday. BTW from one who was there and in their coo shed after Jinky’s wonder goal the game was held up for a couple of minutes due to missile throwing and a field invasion from the copland road end, that was back in the day when 007 was a Tim.

I know many can’t stand Radio Clyde but am so looking forward to super score board tonight, by the way ex-shock jock Hugh Keevins must read these pages as he stole Jobo’s “one more sleep” on Saturday and also referred to yesterday’s game as the “Glasgow derby” not saying he is getting any wiser but old age is letting Hugh’s Celticness slip through, he also likes to say for as long as Brendan Rodgers is here the other mob will live in Celtic’s shadow :-)

Agree, – Sevco scored directly after the double foul on James Forrest with Collum in very close attendance he blanked it, long punt – mistake – goal.

Much has been made of the substitutions especially Eddie because of his goal, but Brendan Rodgers also very wisely as it turned out kept Dedryk Boyata on, when supporters and lesser managers would have hooked him

    for his mistake.

As I recall Carthage used to fill their attack with elephants, plus ca change. I still think we need to sprinkle some salt on their pitch. I’m sure Griff would be up for it.

    ****

Many historian’s report that Roman general Scipio Aemilianus Africanus plowed over and sowed the city of Carthage with salt after defeating it in the Third Punic War (146 BC), sacking it, and forcing the survivors into slavery.

Although I believe that this is not quite accurate, as some of the historians mistranslated some of the texts…

in fact, what actually happened was that, in the Third Tunnock War,after defeating the Forces of Darkness, Roman general Griffio Aemilianus Hibernius (also known as Leigh) plowed over and sowed Snake Mountain with salt (he had too many irn bru’s the night before, and really needed to pee) after which he feasted on Tea Cakes. The City of Snake mountain was relegated, and went into administration …but the survivors were not actually sold into slavery… they were actually TUPE’d to new teams (hence, the actually escaped slavery) .. but you can see how these mistakes were made … mostly by the BBC history department.
