Newco games bring the best out of McGregor

254

The absence of suspended Mikael Lustig on Sunday might convince Brendan Rodgers to go with a back three of Ajer, Compper and Simunovic, with Kieran Tierney and James Forrest playing wingback rolls.  With Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham and Moussa Dembele certain to start, and Tom Rogic looking very likely, Brendan Rodgers’ options begin to look straightforward.

He will pair any two from Scott Sinclair, Odsonne Edouard, Eboue Kouassi and Callum McGregor.  Games against Newco seem to bring out the best in Scott and Callum, but both have missed out on selection recently.  I understand the call for Odsonne to partner Moussa up front, but, given a choice, I would rather see us control midfield than worry too much about the top of the pitch.

The Ibrox surface suits Callum McGregor’s playmaking ability.  Have him in there pulling the strings.

That’s actually a really good point. Particularly on the right side where we don’t have a natural full back. I think a back three always works best where you have a natural full back either on the outside of the back three or on the outside of the midfield five.

Not sure if we have too many options though, unless we go with Gamboa.

  4. If I’m right, the game on Sunday will follow the same pattern as previous. They will fly off at 100 mph, run out of steam, after 10 minutes, then we take control, easy really. I certainly would not put out a team with defence in mind at all, press high, and swamp them. Cannot see us lose this one, and I’m hoping we give them a right good doing. All we must be aware of is our discipline and keeep eleven players on the park.

Marvin Compper is likely to feature at iBrokes with Dedryk Boyata still injured and Mikael Lustig suspended. Struck me as very one footed on Saturday, much in the Charlie Mulgrew school of lefty CB’s, if selected would start with no SPL experience, pitched into an important away game.

Too soon for Paddy Roberts? – maybe an appearance from the bench Armstrong not ready either, but good, bad or indifferent Scott Sinclair will take two Sevcs to subdue, they are terrified from him, and flair player of the year James Forrest will start regardless.

James Forrest didn’t manage a star game against old Rainjurrz and curiously hasn’t even troubled Sevco, who’ll also likely double mark the wee wideman. Not convinced he’ll lay that Sevco ghost, but would love to see him in full flow.

Tom Rogic over Callum McGregor for me in this one, again Callum’s input from the bench along with Edouard to seal the ‘away win’ with goals to spare.

    Thanks.

I agree with the right side. They will use Murphy as an out ball, so we need to be aware of that.

We also have to be alert on the other side.

They only play through the middle when team cede that area to them.

Otherwise, it’s the long ball over the top or diagonal than scrap for the breaking ball.

  7. Call_of_Juarez on

I reckon if the currants beat us on Sunday wee Nicola will declare a national holiday for Monday. So it’s not all bad:)

  8. I think BR likes the passing and possesion game, as proven by the stats, but maybe we should adopt the old direct tactics. For first 40 minutes just blooter the ball to their byline. Let them bring it back upfield and send them back to their byline. Then bring in our possession football to score on half time. Then kill them in second half.

  9. Now the following post may upset the majority on the thread .

There is no doubt that sevco are better than before and probably the best of a bad lot …

We are not playing with anything like the purpose we have shown before this i feel this is down to a bit of a normal depression and a long slog along with and i hate to say it a bit of general malaise from the squad.

However this is the first time sevco have gone into a game with more than a hope and maybe a feeling of expectancy on their end .

There is no doubt murty has got them together and a bit of harmony .. he has shown also he had some understanding of how to set his players up to counter what we have i expect brendan to be able to change this and devise a better way round a still realisticly poor team.

The fact is we have had a run against them which we have not had to much to worry about this is most likley the start of a period of them being closer,as unpalatable as it is .

In the normal scheme of things any game against your biggest rivals (i wont go into the semantics of the last line) is hard to win and the team in the general ascendancy is always likley for a shock defeat more so as the time at the top is greater.

So to the point my gut tells me we are going to lose one of the next 3 games based on all the above and the chance of probability before we add crap officals etc .

For me i would rather it was this upcoming fixture if we are indeed to lose one …. i dont think it impacts the league if we do despite what the media may tell us .

However a defeat in the cup would be hard to take it kills many dreams of us all .

A defeat by them if it happens may also jolt the team to life as it would also surely give them hope for the next meeting the one which is a must win for us much more than them .

There are lots permutations and narritives to be set over the next few weeks we are definitely missing something in the team and defeat by them may not be in a longer term view be the worst thing .

I am naturally prone to pessimism when it comes to us that must be said but i see way to much confidence that we are turning up to roll over sevco 4/5 0 etc …. i look at this are they better than the last time we played … the answer is yes are we better or playing better after all the tired excuses following on from the draw a game which sevco were in no we are not we are almost stuttering thru .

Just the thoughts of a nervous good guy who will have to go to my bed early on sunday if we do lose.

    Are you ever optimistic?

We might draw with them, but Sevco should never beat us over 90 mins, even with MIB help.

I’m not worried about Sevco..I’m worried about our own performances they have been sluggish and ponderous much of the season. However our excellent performances Aberdeen Sevco Zenit and Hearts have been down to a few things as I see it..the atmosphere and the crowd being up for it and giving the players a lift and a fast start and working hard at closing down the opposition. I’m sure Brendan will get it right and the players will know their jobs.

1-3 on Sunday. Hungover on Monday is my prediction

  15. I’m sure I’m not the only one who used to get told that Celtic don’t put my breakfast on the table.

My answer was usually, ‘I know but they make it taste better when they win’

    Just a thought!

  16. Having watched the Orcs recently, they move the ball out to Murphy and Candyass quite quickly, both are players who can put in a decent pass but faced with a decent midfield or defence they run out of ideas also quite quickly. Beating Ayr Utd and Falkirk hardly makes them title challengers, Aberdeens complete and utter capitulation to them is the only reason they are being mentioned in dispatches…

Mon The Hoops into this mob…

  17. Celtic will be up for it on Sunday. So will they.

The difference will be the quality and the brains. If we use both as well as fire in the belly then we will not lose.

I was concerned going to pittodrie because of our form and the physical challenge. I get concerned going to Edinburgh and I don’t like the trips to Motherwell. The Scumbowl? Pretty much the same Football challenge as pittodrie if you take the emotional stuff out of it. With a better pitch I hope. The bulk of Sunday’s team will have been involved in last years eyepox skelpings. I’m sure Brendan will have a plan and will have them well briefed about the apparent confidence on the part of the sevvies.

There’s only one team who are out of the ‘race’ if they don’t win on Sunday. Who is under pressure? No us.

  18. I saw that video of the orcs in a bar somewhere celebrating getting us in the semi final.

There’s a psychology students case study right there. The herd instinct of the underdog/ underclass celebrating the approach of a superior force and old enemy. What is that all about?

Enjoying the footy talk for a change without the constant doom and gloom merchants telling us how stupid we are for supporting the team we love.

Anyway for me there is only one worry for Sunday and thats the goalkeeper, he is a bomb scare I’m afraid. My concern is that he chucks an early goal and we then have backs to the wall for the rest of the game, even his distribution which is supposed to be his strong point had been very sketchy to say the least. I would have given Bain a run out against Morton so that we could have brought him on in an emergency at the crumbledome.

Hope I’m totally wrong but he is the weakest point in the team and the only position in the hun squad where they are stronger IMO.

On the plus side we have Broonie :-) He will as usual run the midfield!! Also big Moussa has been slowly getting better over the last few weeks another positive. Lets also hope that they have to play Halliday at LB wee Jamsie will have a field day.

  20. TIMMY,

Commper looks to lack mobility (I have seen faster Subbuteo players).

    ——————————-

The Morton game is the only time I’ve seen Commper play, so it’s early days to pass worthwhile comment. I can’t say that I thought he was slow and apart from the first few minutes, I thought he looked composed and a good passer. Of course, the Morton game was no great test. I’d definitely start him on Sunday.

    Bob,

Someone on the blog yesterday – apologies, I can’t recall who – described themselves as pessimistic while still always expecting a 3-1 win, and I am in that paradoxical camp as well.

From what little I have seen of Deadco in play, they flatter to deceive. They have a pumped-up sense of self-entitlement brought about mainly by reading their own PR.

Most of their recent opponents have already lost the game in the tunnel because they have been reading it too – and, in the case of Aberdeen, have been deliberately destabilised by it.

When they have come up against a team that doesn’t buy into the BS – Hibs for example – they have been dismantled and made to look what they are.

True, Murty has improved them from the (hilarious) slow-motion train crash of the Pedro days, but establishing a basic playing system, and not conducting impromptu press conferences from waist-high shrubbery, doesn’t make you a good coach.

I’m looking forward to the curtain being whipped away on Sunday when the Bhoys expose the tribute act for what it is – smoke and mirrors, empty bombast, playground bullies.

Let’s not forget – the team we are playing on Sunday has been assembled using money their club don’t have. Deadco are trading while insolvent, contrary to all the rules of the sport.

    Talk about a Shame Game?

  24. and not conducting impromptu press conferences from waist-high shrubbery, doesn’t make you a good coach.

    Nail on the head!

That’s exactly why they have to be unmasked on the field of play on Sunday, rumped and rolled and consigned to also ran status…
