Newco interims, vanity projects and inevitable conclusion

449

Interim accounts for the 6 months to 31 December 2017 were issued by Newco over the Easter break.  Income was up £3.1m, due to the new merchandise deal negotiated (paid for) with SportsDirect, higher ticketing and hospitality revenue, although no mention was made in the notes of the progress the club made with its first foray into European football.

Costs were up correspondingly, by £3.5m, leading to a loss of £926k for the period.  The previous year, a corresponding loss of £238k led to a season-end loss of £6.663m.  We can expect something similar for this season, leaving directors to find an operating loss in the region of £7m.

The good news is that “penniless” Dave King has convinced a Trust to provide the £11m required for him to make an offer for shares his concert party do not already own.  The offer of 20p/share is likely to be accepted by some who have tired of the episode, including those who were ousted by King and colleagues in 2015.

It is likely all the money is in place to cover this season’s deficit and the share offer but the big question remains, how to breakeven?  Competing with Celtic is not even a question.

If expenditure remains at current levels, reaching the Europa League group stage would bring in enough money to remove the spectre of running out of cash, but that is a huge challenge.  Newco would need to overcome four higher seeds to get there (something I doubt has ever been achieved).

They could increase the football budget, but that would expose them to higher-still potential losses, with associated risks.  Or they could downsize.  Stick with Murty, get rid of the Portuguese vanity projects and develop a team from the ground up.

Downsizing also comes with risks.  Vanity projects sell tickets and merchandise.  A first team full of teenage graduates from Murray Park would be a hard act to ‘follow’.

In short, I don’t see financial viability in this club, never mind competing with Celtic.

My ticket is always passed on, however it’s up to the individuals then if they want to go. We have had some horrendous weather conditions recently Which can deter many supporters, especially when they know they can watch any game on social media or even in some pubs.

It is also so much easier and cheaper for short weekend breaks nowadays and choice has never been greater. Shift work is also more prevalent and compulsory for many.

For the reasons above and much more to boot , our focus must be on enhancing our match day experience. Entertaining football, pre game attractions eg Celtic Ladies games etc , hotels, pop up bars, friendly KO times and summer football must be considered and evaluated. Objections will be inevitable, but must be overcome if the reasoning is correct.

Also our public transport infrastructure is a joke and really needs to be addressed. Walking for miles is not for everyone.

However, last but certainly not least from my perspective is :- if Celtic enforce the rule about not passing on tickets, that will be the end of me purchasing a ST and that is a definite.

  2. Greenpinta,

    Like I said earlier………..

If we had been playing Sevco on Saturday the stadium would have been full.

KO times, weather, public transport and ticket prices are only excuses for people.

Yeah – definitely a conundrum there, Paul.

Problem is they will NEVER accept that the glory years of the old club were a result of spending money that wasn’t theirs. They think that period was “normal”.

The MSM have not helped in this respect.

How do they then either re-adjust expectations (with concomitant risk of losing support and hence income) or keep “finding” external money to (try to) compete with a better-resourced, better-run club?

Agree with everyone of your points there.

There are loads of spares going in my local in Dalmuir for tomorrow nights match. Cannae give them away, for many different reasons. We will be lucky if there are 40000 of us in attendance tomorrow.

  5. Hi DD

Yes our mothers had to be tough, I had a much easier time listening to The Blue Nile;) and smoking the weed, very West End! The past 2 years have been a bit rough but at least the NHS confirmed there is a brain in my old bounce! You’ve done well G coming back from a torrid horrible place, that takes real courage. I would love to meet up again particularly in the Judges, it’s a bit different these days, emboldened Huns have found a haven sadly HH

  6. It would be good to have a push from CQN on the Compliance Officer issue relative to the renewal of season tickets. HH

  7. It would be good to have a push from the Celtic board on the Compliance Officer.

Even a public statement asking why the delay.

Like GREENPINATA, I always pass on my ticket; someone of this parish was the beneficiary on Saturday.

That is, IMHO, condescending pish! I didn’t make the game on Saturday because I had commitments to prepare the local Church for the Easter Vigil; no matter who was playing, I couldn’t have made it. Similarly, a few others I know also missed the game for the same reasons.

I also know of a few people who had taken the opportunity to go for a family break.

You don’t know why people cannot make a game and cannot judge everyone from your own perception!

I know why people don’t go to certain games.

I work with them, socialise with them, am related to them and sit among them at Celtic Park.

Always moaning about midweek games, Sunday games, KO times, weather etc

Never ever missed a Rangers game or a Sevco game.

Most of them won’t be there tomorrow night.

All the usual reasons / excuses why they missed the game.

Everyone of them will attend the Sevco game no matter when it is played.

It is great when I re did my IQ test recently and found my score was the same high score as it was 40 years ago. Sort of confirmation that the Mary Jane has left no brain damage.

Any game I have missed in the last 10 years had nothing to do with KO times, weather, public transport or ticket prices.

I know that’s the same for others.

  12. Not only have you to buy a season ticket you’ve to go to every game as well.

I think you’re being a little unfair. If someone has a season ticket and is available when we play, then of course they should attend.

    But it isn’t always possible.

Some people stay further afield than, say,a two-hour trip to the ground. We have ST holders spread far and wide. They pay through the nose for the privilege of seeing their team maybe five times a season.

Because the other option is paying nothing and never being able to get a ticket.

Others-btw including at least one poster from here-are unable to attend due to health issues which have sprung up in the last few months.

Should we limit ST holders to within a radius of a two-hour trip? Should we refuse renewal for non-perfect attendance? Of course not.

Celtic FC belongs to us all.

  17. i do have to say, i bloody hate the walk to celtic park nowadays, me old knees are feeling it. I park in the tesco, and even that half mile takes me 8 minutes. what i did notice on saturday was a few cars covering their number plates so the cameras dont get them.

i would like them to have some park and ride options somewhere. or shuttle busses from dalmarnock and bellgorve.

or get a station built closer,

better spending the money on them things than a refurb of the main stand.

  18. I like Eric Sviatchenko, last season he was very good on most occasions. but I remember when stories were coming out last year that his ambition is to play in the EPL. These stories were being leaked by him. Repeated today. And about what went on in the Celtic changing room. And he wonders why he went out of favour with Brendan. He needs to learn to zip it. It’s one thing to harbour ambitions elsewhere but keep it to yourself when you are with a top club like Celtic. It’s very disrespectful. To the club, the manager and the fans.

    Thanks for the replies.

Sevco game or not, if I can’t make it I can’t make it.

What is undoubtedly true though is that the tickets are in much more demand and easier to give away Possibly that’s why they are the infamous £49 ( but that’s for another day )

The flip side though, which you have obviously thought about but have not mentioned is that many of the persons who would gladly take a ticket for a Hun game have no interest in games like tomorrow.

Incidentally It will be nice to attend a game in normal attire rather that being dressed in multi layered, padded winter Antarctica hiking expedition gear for extreme conditions.

I mean locals, or fairly local :-) ex- pats excluded because of logistics.

Season ticket holders are bound to pick and choose the odd mid week game for example.

It’s money up front season ticket holding Tim’s that have created and maintained the gap between us and any other club in Scotland.
