Newco preaching financial risk blind to Celtic benchmark

510

You would be forgiven for believing you lived in a parallel universe if you read Newco Rangers director, Paul Murray, today, who told us, “the benchmark in Scotland is Celtic”.  “First and foremost, we don’t want to put the club into financial risk”, he told reporters.

Yes, I know, it’s supposed to be the company, or maybe the holding company, that’s put at financial risk, not the club, the club can sail on regardless of financial realities. With an impressive sense of entitlement, but we’ll not press Murray to square that circle.

Let’s instead remind him of the roles of a non-executive director.  PricewaterhouseCoopers define the roles of a non-exec as:

Constructively challenging and contributing to the development of strategy

Monitoring the performance of management

Satisfying themselves that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust

Succession planning and determining appropriate levels of remuneration for executive directors.

Paul Murray, you will remember, was a non-executive director of oldco Rangers, and that club was well and truly put into financial risk, costing hundreds of creditors money, ending in liquidation.

Businesses have non-executives to offer help but also to be the eyes and ears of ordinary shareholders, creditors, customers, staff and any other stakeholders.  It’s their job to sit at board meetings and ask the questions of the executive management, ensuring the company is able to meet all obligations.

They should be banging fists on the table demanding risks are brought under control.  If they are unable to impose control on management, they should resign.

It was Paul Murray’s role to ensure that financial controls and systems of risk management were robust at oldco.  He was paid to constructively challenge strategy, and to ensure management performed their duties.

In this respect, Murray was magnificent.

22 years ago we went through a rebirth.  The old board, unable to take the club forward, limped off the scene.  Imagine for a second that a few years later Fergus and his fellow directors were swept aside by the old board (who remember saw the writing on the wall and appropriate took steps).

It’s unthinkable.  The benchmark in Scotland is indeed Celtic, where those susceptible to vanity spending on football bling at the cost of financial security will never be the eyes and ears of the club’s fans and shareholders.

These people are perfect in every way.

    Joe Filippis Haircut,

I agree that we know that they cheated.

However it is a big jump to state unequivocally that our Board “appear to be happy to play in a rigged game”. I know about DD’s comment way back when First Teir Tribunal reached its ludicrous decision and our Board’s silence. Quis tacueris, consueris and all that. But perhaps for legal reasons our Board CANNOT speak out. I agree that CFC not progressing Res 12 does not look good but I for one do not know the reasons.

If the Board doesn’t speak up once the court dispenses with extant cases then there will be a fall in season (books) and the next AGM will be a riot.

What do you suggest Board says given possible legal restraints?

I, like you, am disgusted with what is going on but want verifiable evidence before coming to a conclusion. HH

Sorry comrade but i have a issue regards your comment about india

Narendra Modi was elected prime minister of my second home in may 2014 and quickly assessed many of the economic issues in the country

He pulled in major companies like general electric. . Rolls Royce etc and told them that if they wanted to maintain the multi million dollar contracts they had for power generation, air craft etc then they would have to manufacture in India and generate work for many of the unemployed there.

The rate of pay and other resources is lower in India – much lower in fact . He convinced the big companies to set up and train Indians and as well as retaining contracts they could increase profits with lower costs

Gone are the days of the British empire using countries such as India as slaves.

Shri modi ain’t mahatma gandhi ( my hero ) but he is fighting for India against the multi nationals and I totally understand his stance

As you know I changed business last year and have discovered that he also told my parent company that the same rule applies to supplying alcohol to India. . A few of our guys were in bangalore recently – helping them set up processing and production lines ( putin is doing the same in Russia too )

You carried zombies on your back for years mate and I told you it’s for the best when your company gets shot of the chancers who take a wage for zero input . You will always be OK cos your a real artisan and earn your wages ….

Know your enemy comrade .. it’s not the Indians – it’s the cowboys; (

  6. Sometimes I actually wonder.

There are no LEGAL barriers to the club speaking out about the ILLEGAL registration of players for a decade, none whatsoever, it has nothing to do with any pending court case.

The club are obviously happy with the decade of cheating that has been proven.

“Different words with different meanings . Unless you consider them to be synonymous .”

Well, if I did that would be just my opinion. However if the dictionary backs me up- that is evidence e.g.

    assertion

    əˈsəːʃ(ə)n/

    noun

    noun: assertion; plural noun: assertions

a confident and forceful statement of fact or belief.

“his assertion that his father had deserted the family”

    synonyms: declaration, contention, statement, claim, submission, postulation, averment, opinion, proclamation, announcement, pronouncement, assurance, attestation, affirmation, protestation, profession, swearing, insistence, avowal;

“We`re talking Warburton and Deila and your totally meaningless statistical comparison.

As I said before ” Apples and oranges ”

That`s why you want to focus on semantics.”

We’re talking people in the same profession. Whose teams enjoy similar advantages in their respective leagues. Whose league record is strikingly similar. That’s enough points of legitimate contact and overlap to establish that as 2 similar fruits worthy of comparison.

And any focus on semantics was because that was all you offered. A bold assertion that those two words were not synonyms – which was quite easily disproved. As opposed to being simply declared invalid- which would only have been my opinion- and your method of discourse.

P.S. Re being called a Right wing Tory as the equivalent of being called Marxist, is there not a defence of truth in there. Are you not a self-confessed right wing Tory?

After reading a little about the GPS monitors on footballers, I am left to conclude that they are used to identify areas for improvement. I could find absolutely no evidence that they are being used to determine team selection!

The increasingly scientific approach to football is not to my liking but I can fully understand why managers and coaches try to gain every possible advantage.

    Good evening all,

Don’t shoot the messenger …….ach go on, I don’t like the wee bugger anyway………but he has just told me that Sportsound was a fine programme tonight.

Anyway, I note earlier that the subject of the bra type vest monitors has popped up again.

You will be interested to know (believe me you will) that in November 2010 during the early stages of the Henry McLeish report into Scottish Football, I submitted a parallel analysis of the way forward.

Amongst other progressive ideas, some of which I will bore you later on was the introduction of just such an item….my idea was however slightly different from the one that has been implemented…mine was submitted as follows.

    The Role of the Referees

•With immediate effect all referees and linesman will be dispensed with. The laws of the game, the conduct of the match, stoppages, additional time, everything including penalties and all that stuff will be controlled by the commentators and pundits in the media box, or if they can’t make the game, by satellite link from their hotel bedroom while they enjoy a late breakfast or an early livener.

By using current technology, decisions (made when a majority of the arbiters agree) will be flashed up on the electronic scoreboard thus keeping the fans involved and informed of the whys and wherefores of decisions. This should lead to an even greater empathy between expert and supporter; more even than exists now.

To ensure that players do not take unfair advantage of this seemingly “at arms’ length” arbitration, they (the players) will be fitted with two small electrical terminals. In the event of any ‘law’ transgression the media observer(s) (again based on a majority pressing the red or green button) will transmit a short sharp shock as a quick reminder of the ethos within which the game should be played. Yellow and red cards will no longer be needed as additional transgressions will see the current increased accordingly. We feel that this will bring a degree of fit between punishment and crime that is all too sadly lacking in today’s game. We also feel that due to the high regard in which both commentators and expert interjectors are held, arguments by supporters over the correctness of the decisions are unlikely to arise.

Depending on the severity of the transgression the electric shock can be increased to any level that the majority again agree on. This can range from

    – ouch yah bass

    – FFS ah cannae move ma left leg

    right through to

    – Reenacting the ‘lobotomy’ scene from ‘one flew over the cuckoo’s nest”

Should a replay for instance show that a team has lost a goal scoring opportunity or had an illegal goal scored against them, then the whole of the opposition can be disabled while the opponents are given the opportunity to rectify the situation.

Methods will be implemented to ensure that some wee computer hacking geek cannae interfere wae his mobile phone just because he has a bet on wae Paddy Power.

•As a minor but important aside, in order to minimise the dilution of the game’s roots and keep it cosy within the Scottish family, ALL commentators and contributors to things like papers and blogs will hereby refrain from using the terms goal-kicks, free-kicks, and throw-ins. These events will WITHOUT EXCEPTION be given their true and historic descriptive of ‘Bye-kicks, fouls and Shies.

To think that they have high jacked my idea for recording how far you run….what a waste.

I will leak more of the report later.

Mossack Fonseca eat yer heart out…..what you will be privy to later is absolute TNT!

    Hail Hail

    Matt

Whereas The Mint was closely ‘involved’ with the Bank of Scotland, DD has a long working relationship with Irish Banks and International Banking in general.

    ———————–

Nothing in itself wrong with long working relationships with Banks. The new club company would be only too pleased to have such contacts. D.Murray on the other hand has the rare achievement of actually bursting a previously profitable bank aided and abetted by bro. Masterton, and being bailed out by the great British taxpayer. KILMARNOCK…0

    CELTIC…1

    (Christie 28)

NEWLY-CROWNED Development League champions, Celtic, produced a dominant display at Rugby Park today (Thursday) to overcome Kilmarnock 1-0, extending their unbeaten league run to a remarkable 26 games.

The Bhoys strode confidently into the lead just under the half-hour mark through Ryan Christie’s curling finish, which proved to be decisive in a well-contested match in Ayrshire.

John Kennedy was among the spectators on an afternoon where the young Hoops battled hard and dominated proceedings.

Tommy McIntyre had made four changes to the team that dispatched St Johnstone on Monday to clinch the title. Conor Hazard replaced Ross Doohan between the sticks, while first-team players Ryan Christie and Scott Allan joined the side in midfield at the expense of Innes Murray and Theo Archibald.

In defence, there was also a return to the side for full-back Sam Wardrop as Dan Higgins dropped down to the bench.

Minutes after kick-off at Rugby Park, the Bhoys were swiftly into their stride, controlling possession and probing for openings.

Some thrusting runs down the flanks from Christie, Allan and Mark Hill looked the visitors’ most likely route to profit in the early exchanges.

But it was through a set-piece that the young Hoops carved out their first meaningful chance in the 25th minute as Fiacre Kelleher met Christie’s corner and saw his headed effort land on the roof of the Killie net.

Celtic were completely on top but the Ayrshire side pressed the Bhoys well anytime they got near the box, prohibiting their attacks.

Eventually the pressure paid off just before the half-hour mark. Ryan Chrstie’s phenomenal first touch allowed him to run at goal and the midfielder made no mistake from the edge of the area, sublimely curling the ball into the top corner.

The champions continued to dominate after the interval and substitute Dan Higgins nearly doubled the advantage, his dipping volley just creeping over the bar in the 63rd minute.

The young Hoops continued to seek further reward for their pressing play, with Allan’s inviting cross at the six-yard box failing to be capitalised on by the Celtic attack.

There were a flurry of Killie chances in the final minutes of the match, but the champions saw out the closing stages comfortably.

The win meant McIntyre’s side maintained their ambitions of going through the league campaign undefeated, with Dundee up next for the Bhoys at Links Park on Friday, April 15.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1): Hazard; Wardrop, Kelleher, McCart, McIlduff; Hill (Higgins 60), Thomson; Hendry (Murray 78’), Christie, Allan; Miller.

Not Used: Doohan, Kerr, Kidd, Archibald.

  23. Eurochamp and Jin Con,

Thanks for the replies. I am ambivalent on their use. If they have priority over judgement of contribution and role, then it is wrong in my view. However, if they are part of the mix and used to improve a player’s performance, I think they have merit.

I know this will be unpopular but remember Jim Baxter? At his peak, he was a great player but he hardly broke a sweat. He entertained by beating players while walking, and let the ball do the work. If team selection was based largely on monitors he would not have made the team.

I have wondered if this is a major explanation of any unrest that exists, and for RD’s continual changing of the team?

  24. Maxibhoy @ 7:31

    No it wasn’t an opinion.

The league this year will be won by Aberdeen as quite simply we will not have the quality to overcome the battling SPL teams but also the sly and subtle refereeing decisions which will increase in the coming weeks.

    That is an unequivocal statement.

Tontime Tim: Ecellent post from you as per usual. Age has its compensations. ‘ When I were a lhad ‘ always means that present ‘shit’ teams compare very favourably with past ‘shit ‘ teams if you go back far enough. As I said on here a couple of days ago ‘ That’s no crap.. This was crap’. As far as I can see the difference between past ‘Rangers in the league ‘ and present ‘ Sevco not in the league ‘ is 12 points or 4 in really olden times! You have to get more points than anybody else not just win 4 or 2 games. Anyway , I fair enjoyed your post. Hail Hail.

  30. Cowiebhoy,

That’s is quite a list and as you say, not nearly exhaustive.

“If I was a CEO and chartered accountant, I would be asking some very pertinent questions on how much this has and sill is costing my club”

    Too true…

It strikes me that we have got our priorities wrong, in the constant search to make a buck out of our player pool, we have developed a strategy (sic) that totally misses the point… i.e. Building a quality, entertaining, winning Football team.

For me each signing should be looked in terms of… using an American cliché…. what he brings to the team. Not a gamble on a potential sell on value.

If a player becomes part of a quality winning team, if he has the silverware/medals to show for it, if he has played an important part in the teams European ambitions, then he’ll become a valuable player ¥€$.

Tontine Tim did a great post, many Celtic players I’ve never seen but in my teens/early twenties I’ve seen quality strikers transfered to…

    Liverpool

    Manchester Utd

    Arsenal

Changed days but how much is that worth today??? All those players were doing were playing Football the Glasgow Celtic way…

We need to take a long hard look at our priorities.

    Hail Hail
