Newco, the Record and the police

1024

It’s not often CQN quotes the Daily Record, so hold onto your bonnets……….

Most of us have been watching the old media/new media for years.  Actual news is now well and truly in the domain of the new media but when it comes to some matters, the authority of the old media seems to be greater than the new.

Think back to those scenes at Inverness last year when Jelly ‘n’ Ice Cream was given its first outing.  That reaction came after the Daily Record put their weight behind the notion that many of us had been saying for weeks/months/years, that Rangers were going out of business.  It wasn’t actual news, everyone had heard the same stories many times, but when the Record went on-record, the remaining doubters were convinced.

Viewed through this prism, when today’s Record raises the spectre of police and liquidator action, even the most sceptical must know things are serious.  This morning they urge Newco’s chairman Malcolm Murray to:

“Tell the stock market his board understands the explosive nature of Whyte’s claims and that they are on top of their duties.  He should order his own investigation, hire independent accountants and lawyers to examine all evidence, while co-operating in full with the police and with liquidators BDO.

“That’s the kind of decisive action Murray should be taking this morning and I suspect it’s precisely what he wants to do.  But if he does not emerge at some point today or tomorrow then it means he is being undermined by his fellow directors who have baulked when implored by him to do the right thing.

“His allies – if any – should go with him because if they share his concerns but fail to act upon them they too risk massive reputational damage.  Maybe even worse than that if the police become involved. That’s how serious the situation has become”.

The allegations made by Craig Whyte last week are more serious than any charge previously levelled at a football club board in Scotland, infinitely more serious than what has been alleged about Craig Whyte, Sir David Murray or Campbell Ogilvie.  They have, of course, come from a man who has been shown to be liberal with his use of facts, but they have been made about Green, who has admitted he tells people what they want to hear in order to get his way.

The Record have also realised the consequences of Green and Whyte colluding during the administration process:

“Green was eventually allowed to pick up the club’s assets for the paltry figure of £5.5m. A deal agreed with Duff and Phelps which excluded rival bids from any other party.

This was as unfathomable agreement that may have cost creditors millions – and which was triggered the second Green’s group stumped up enough money to secure preferred bidder status.

Now it has been further claimed that in order to help scramble that deposit together, Whyte dumped £137,500 into an account belonging to Ahmad’s mother.

Again, this will be of great interest to the authorities because, essentially, this was the very moment Green and his backers were given a clean run at picking up a £50m business for a pittance.”

Newco’s independent non-executive directors, including the chairman, are in a difficult position.  If they were not previously aware of the collusion between Green and Whyte they may be of a mind to resign, but as non-execs, it was their job to look after the interests of stakeholders before the smelly stuff lands, which they have clearly failed to do.

Scottish football has had a troublesome couple of years as it prepared for and dealt with the consequences of the liquidation of Rangers.  Unless Whyte’s claims can be proven to be without foundation, and unless BDO take a kind view of Charles Green’s agreement with Craig Whyte, the months ahead will at least provide some finality.  Stewart Gilmour at St Mirren will have a great deal to think about ahead of his board meeting on Wednesday.

Just think, without so many people backing Charles Green the ‘Rangers’ brand could be in the hands of Brian Kennedy right now! If you see someone preaching the gospel according to Charles Green, don’t try to undermine their faith.

In my case, there is nothing noble about it.

IMO,she suffered a fate worse than death by becoming an irrelevance then an embarrassment.

The final blow for her was to suffer a similar fate to many-alive without a life.

She caused many to waken up in the morning with no hope of getting out of the prison of hopelessness which she had created for them out of sheer spite and dogma.

Hers was a more comfortable prison but it will have hurt her every bit as much.

Age does not mellow the memory.

Everything I thought of her during the Hunger Strikes , the Miners Strikes , the Poll Tax etc is brought back today , as raw now as it was then .

    My mother always said

” if you can not say something good about someone ,say nothing”

I generally agree with that sentiment .

    But not today

    Champagne will be opened tonight.

From the Independent today. A to Elaine of thatchers life. Spot the mistake.

1980- October: The first modern hunger strike organised by Provisional IRA prisoners ended after 53 days, with Thatcher’s government appearing to concede on demands for the return of ‘special category status’ and privileges.

1980- October: Gives “the lady is not for turning” speech at the Conservative party conference, in which she states her refusal to pull a U-turn on economic liberalisation and counter-inflationary policies such as controlling interest rates to restrict the money supply. This would become her trademark motto.

1981 – March 1: IRA members begin a second hunger strike. During the strike, inmate Bobby Sands is elected as an MP; but Thatcher refuses concessions, declaring that ‘crime is crime, not political’. Sands dies on May 5, after 66 days. Riots follow in Northern Ireland and 100,000 attend his funeral. The world’s attention captured. Seven more would die of self-enforced starvation before the end of the strike on 20 August. Yet Thatcher’s position remained galvanised towards the IRA and was seen as a victory.

Setting free the bears – I’m not at all surprised by your crass response – not everyone (including me) can be clever all of the time.

Celtic supporters pride themselves on their kindness, compassion and charity efforts but on other hand are on here to celebrate the death of an old lady. It is bizarre, shameful, undignifying and very un-Celtic (in my opinion).

    Dear Mr xxxxxxx,

Thank you for your email. I have in fact written to the Chief Constable of Police Scotland about this matter already. I will send you a copy of this letter, and write to you again once I have secured a reply from him. Once you have sight of this correspondence, if you continue to have concerns then please do not hesitate to let me know and I will gladly look into the matter further.

    Yours,

  11. There’s to be no marking of Thatcher’s death at the Manchester game tonight.

Can’t get on too CQN so decided to write a post instead.

I was fair proud to be a Celtic Supporter after going to Gearge Square on Saturday and seeing such a massive turn out, I met so many like friends, too many to name individually, but I wish everyone, all the best.

Nice to see, and speak to Kilbowie Kelt, last time was in Babbity Bowsters when we had a meeting to choose new organisers re the Kano Charity, that was quite a long time ago now, but I remembered his blogging name when he asked me, I always complain about my memory starting to fade so you must have left a lasting impression on me, to remember after such a long time.

I enjoyed the game on Saturday, and it was good to see the crowd enjoying themselves for a change,we really haven’t had much to smile about lately, but it was an entertaining game for a change,Maybe it was the passing of Craigie Whyte round the park that got us into a cheery mood and it last for me into the early evening where I had a drink with a few good friends, Well I hope they are still good friends,I don’t think I was that good company, when my medication started to ware out off my system, but it wasn’t enough to dull my day, I enjoyed every minute of my Saturday in town.

I had to get back to Wishaw and was standing waiting on the train when a guy came up to me and asked if he could give me some advice,I said what did he want,he said can’t you put your programme in an inside pocket, you don’t want to be showing that on this train,I thought it was a bit over the top but put in my inside pocket just in case,at Bridgeton a couple of 16-17 year olds came on the train and within a couple of minutes there was the sound of the sash coming from a phone, and it was these two kids with smirks on their hunnish faces,I knew it was them as they were ugly, that carried on until Bellshill where they enlighted from the train, they wonder why they are hated so much?. I wish I had been 30 years younger I’d have wiped the smile of their face.

  13. Glendalystonsils likes a mr whippy with his lime green jelly on

The ghost of Maggie Thatcher pulled the CQN plug out. She was obviously annoyed by all you guys saying nasty things about a dear old lady. :)

  14. As Elvis Costello said….

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign

A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain

She spills with compassion, as that young childs

Face in her hands she grips

Can you imagine all that greed and avarice

Coming down on that childs lips

Well I hope I don’t die too soon

I pray the lord my soul to save

Oh I’ll be a good boy, Im trying so hard to behave

Because there’s one thing I know, I’d like to live

    Long enough to savour

That’s when they finally put you in the ground

Ill stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When england was the whore of the world

    Margeret was her madam

And the future looked as bright and as clear as

    The black tarmacadam

Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isnt

    Haunted by every tiny detail

Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands

All she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run

Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his only son

And how it’s only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt

Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt

Try telling me she isn’t angry with this pitiful discontent

When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment

And then expect you to say thank you straighten up, look proud and pleased

Because youve only got the symptoms, you haven’t got the whole disease

Just like a schoolboy, whose heads like a tin-can

Filled up with dreams then poured down the drain

Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and maimed

Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the lord your soul to keep

I think I’ll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep

I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap

Cos when they finally put you in the ground

They’ll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down
