News doesn’t pay anymore

801

At the start of the week our man in Poland sent me a link to the Croatian outlet who interviewed Nikica Jelavic.  I mentioned the player in an article yesterday and recalled his earlier comments, which I referenced as background information.    This ‘news’ was subsequently carried by today’s radio and print outlets in Scotland.

It’s maybe a low blow to bring out the ‘Lazy journalism’ point on the day Scotland’s formerly-largest newspaper shed journalists, although the point is perfectly illustrated, but lazy journalism always found its place in the past.  The real problem has little to do with the standard of journalism on offer, it’s about business models in the old media.  News doesn’t pay unless you can tax consumers or bundle it with paid-for football channels, which is not a good thing.

  1. ‘A bellwether is any entity in a given arena that serves to create or influence trends or to presage future happenings.

The term is derived from the Middle English bellewether and refers to the practice of placing a bell around the neck of a castrated ram (a wether) leading his flock of sheep.’

I’m still buying as much music as I ever did. Mainly on CD (all of which I also then copy onto ITunes) although I realise that CD format is far from perfect and sales overall will continue to diminish. I occasionally download individual songs but never an entire album.

The main recent change for me is that during the past 12 months I have bought few things – albums and singles – on vinyl, having not bought any vinyl at all for the previous 15 years. For me this is the best format and a lot of good new (local) bands are now selling their music in vinyl format.

  5. C1st – when you think about how sport, not just football, is presented now on TV-I know a lot of the innovation has come from Australia and the States- but the current Shortbread highlights ‘package’ might as well be in black and white.

  6. Celtic_First- the dubbed commentary of the highlights give it a real “false feel”, the giveaway is the scene-setter in the first 5 seconds, some bland statement like “Rangers looking to bounce back after their setback at Parkhead….and here’s Aluko…”

The whole thing is cheap and tacky. Fooling nobody.

    Agreed.

I’m so glad that previous piece of sh1t on Radio Scotland where Traynor hosted his pals from various news publications to “debate” the weekend stories. KInd of kick around the subject, and the coverage. It usually ended up in back slapping and jokes about journalists expenses, but invariably no goals because who’c going to have a go at the paper who might be emplying them next. Complete tosh. I hope my contribution to the BBC survey last year went at least a small way to having this dumped.

I also get teh feeling that those in the employment of a paper and who participate in nightly, or weekly radio shows must be sneering and laughing at the audience off mic, these people will know what tomorrows headline is. At least being in the radio studio they have some control on what gets out.

With the new technology, which is roundly chastised by many in the old media Chick Young, Jim Traynor being two that I can bring to mind, though this goes against the negeral trend of the BBC who emplys both in some capacity. There is a trend amoungst some of these people to roundly critise contributors, texters and tweeters (though again texts and tweets are read out and quoted in their shows) all the “Who are these people?” cries.

I particularily hate when some crass text is red out on the radio, and is quickly followed up by please use your name or we can’t read them out? – eh?? No name, no ready, or is it that the 150 character limit is too much for a commonal garden sports journalist.

    – You know the kind of thing “we have a text here, says ‘Celtic may be 2 points ahead, but Rangers have the men to win the title’, no name on that, you should make sure to include your name, or we can’t read them out’.

DON’T READ THEM OUT THEN. scan to the end, if there is no name then don’t quote it ya bam.

Don’t get me started on Billy Dodds, a man who can disagree then agree with himself again all in the space of one sentance. I’ll propbably always disagree with his points, but if he was able to articulate or even explain his points I’d be able to accept them. I coudl say the same of Murdo Macleod and many other so called pundits.

Didn’t these guys join the school debating club? At least when I shout mass-debator at the radio, there would be some accuracy.

Never watch Sportscene usually but tuned in the other night.

It is truly cringeworthy and even worse than the ole ‘Erchie McPherson behind the desk’ format of my youth.

In fact, it reminded me of that empty feeling you used to get watching Arthur Montford and his sports jaiket on STV – you know, that kind of impression that the studio is totally empty except for him and the cameraman and they are just desperate to put the lights out and go home.

  10. The format on local BBC radio here in Manchester is better than Shortbread. All local teams have their own recognised commentator and pundit. You low who they are and their agenda. They do not pretend to be a fan of other clubs. They all get a slot on the match report and in the phone ins afterwards.

You get Bob from Bolton on moaning but he is moaning to the Bolton pundit. He is given a degree of respect and not ridiculed.

The agenda is not all about Utd and City, although they take up a perhaps slightly more than their fare share.

It is not riveting stuff but neither is it sensationalised nonsense.

philvisreturns, the new media had a role in overcoming super injunctions but feels different when you sign for the lawyers letter, as I occasionally do. If CQN is a bellwether, we are not resourceful enough to take on certain issues.

That’s interesting. Who’s trying to silence you Paul?

  12. The death of the media form we have at the moment raises a great deal of issues. A democratic society absolutely needs a competitive media able and willing to ask questions of those in charge.

All of the stuff that went on with the NOTW and closer to home, the bias in reporting towards Rangers, show a long time ago the media put profit in front of the pursuit of truth. Which is supposed to be what journalism is about.

Humans are evolving socially, more and more people are not swallowing what these troglodytes dish up. We will get to see where the next evolutional stage ends up. I am quite interested to see what develops. My personal opinion is we will have bloggers and online opinionists sitting under some sort of umbrella company. More like a newspaper with merely a bunch of freelancers. The umbrella company gets the bang up to date news and inside info whilst offering resources and financial help / legal protection to their contributors.

I think you will see editorial spin as a thing of the past as people can very often now sniff out what is true and what is not. Covering all avenues and opinions will be the only financially viable path for the umbrella companies now.

BBC Radio Cumbria covers the Carlisle United games pretty well; O.K. they’re biased but far from one eyed. Clearly it helps that there’s only one team in Carlisle [ there’s only one team for hundreds of miles!] but they show how it can be done.

Will any of you start buying that paper again on the basis Traynor is no longer in the building?

And before any of us get too self-congratulatory about that (I was going to use the Winston Wolfe line from Pulp Fiction but our host would red card me) let’s not forget that Traynor has already far too much influence on the Scopttish football agenda through his position as sports editor at Radio Shortbread.

Radio Manchester even has commentary from Rochdale, Bury and Oldham games.

Would be great to see the avowed St.Mirren fan commentator only allowed to deal with St.Mirren games.

Who would then be owning up to their Rangers allegiances? They could do commentary from Brechin v Newco of Glasgow in Div 3.

Now get all my music from downloads and mainly you tube converter-my son banned me from buying anything he told me I was as tube paying for stuff that was ‘free’

my argument that downloading music was killing music/theft was laughed out

He argued new solution for bands was to get off their bahookies and tour-play more live gigs -he has a point and I have been to more live gigs in the last 2 years than the previous 10

anyway I feel helped fund a decent liefestyle for bands since I first bought Ringo’s Sweet Sixteen for Christine Carmichael’s birthday party in 1973 and later on that year saved enough money to buy my first album: Piledriver by Status Quo (I know, I KNOW ,,,)

The price of music (tax on taste ;-) in those days was out of order- I remember paying £10.49 for a second-hand copy of Yessongs vinyl around ’78 or ’79 ,,,The Floyd’s Wall was nearly a tenner in late 1979 (jeezo heavyyy -even for a double album) I was still at school and that was half a week’s wages from my p/t job… and patchouli oil and kurtas were not cheap either ..tho’ a pint was 33p in Bailley’s

the record companies ripped us off for years ..maybe the bands too?

sooo payback time now and if they can still play ..there is a living to be made on the road

The propaganda model is a conceptual model in political economy advanced by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky that states how propaganda, including systemic biases, function in mass media. The model seeks to explain how populations are manipulated and how consent for economic, social and political policies are “manufactured” in the public mind due to this propaganda.

The theory posits that the way in which news is structured (through advertising, media ownership, government sourcing and others) creates an inherent conflict of interest which acts as propaganda for undemocratic forces.

First presented in their 1988 book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, the “Propaganda model” views the private media as businesses interested in the sale of a product — readers and audiences — to other businesses (advertisers) rather than that of quality news to the public. Describing the media’s “societal purpose”, Chomsky writes, “… the study of institutions and how they function must be scrupulously ignored, apart from fringe elements or a relatively obscure scholarly literature”.[1] The theory postulates five general classes of “filters” that determine the type of news that is presented in news media. These five classes are:

    Ownership of the medium

    Medium’s funding sources

    Sourcing

    Flak

Anti-communist ideology ( instead of communist, insert either Celtic or Catholic and as it says below the first are generally regarded as being the most important, it can vary from country to country )

The first three are generally regarded by the authors as being the most important.

Although the model was based mainly on the characterization of United States media, Chomsky and Herman believe the theory is equally applicable to any country that shares the basic economic structure and organizing principles which the model postulates as the cause of media biases.

It is a simple enough theory to apply and i would urge everyone to read manufacturing consent and understanding power, also hegemony or survival, though they are applying it to politics, in this country, politics, religion and sport are all in my opinion, very strange bedfellows
