News: there is no McInnes news

296

After a weekend when we all got odd-jobs around the house done, real football is back tomorrow as the champions head to Dingwall to face Owen Coyle’s auntie’s nephew’s side attempt to take a point or more.

Owen is not Brendan Rodgers, but he is no mug, and will have watched how Steve Clarke, Tommy Wright and Neil Lennon did to hold Celtic this season. They will fight for everything.

Biggest news to come out of the international break is that there is absolutely no news about Derek McInnes. The Aberdeen manager is still the Aberdeen manager, despite his move down the table being suggested by every rent-a-quote in the game.

I remember when Old Rangers were unable to entice a manager from either Aberdeen or Dundee United (Jock Stein counselled both targets against the role). A lot has been liquidated since then, but Newco find themselves trying to achieve what Oldco couldn’t in 1983: recruit a manager from another Scottish club.

Getting McInnes is a fairly straightforward business. He has an agreed compensation figure in his contract; agree to meet that sum and do the deal with the manager. We both know that Newco don’t have any discretionary budget, waiting to be spent on managerial compensation, but if you were convinced you had the right man, you would find the cash somewhere.

No one really knows if McInnes would take the job, although it’s clear matters have not reached that stage yet, despite the passing of three weeks since he was first targeted. We were all convinced he was heading to Sunderland earlier this year, until he completed his due diligence on the club and decided to stay where he was. The length of time it is taking to open talks surely makes a move to Ibrox less enticing.

Not that it really matters, we’ll spank both teams, whoever is in charge.

  5. If McInnes were to be manager at Ibrox. He has tried every possible rock, scissors, paper to beat Celtic, with a better team than available at Ibrox, and come up short every time. The last outing being the most abject. Read and rejoice if it were to come to pass:

If McInnes to Ibrox transpires, happy days. It won’t. He seems too smart in the political game, if not the tactical. Now that pesky Neil Lennon…….

Hope you and the wee man get tickets for Dingwall. Tried my RC connection. Seemingly sold out tomorrow. Always spares in the Highland away games I have found. Buses leaving at stupid o’clock tomorrow, some guys miss their bus early departure. Good luck.

True story ( and this was over 26 years ago)

My wife and I were advised to abort our youngest daughter – testing stated she would be severely brain damaged, and would not live long ( some gene missing)

We both point blank refused this advice, and after about another month of extra testing, were then advised all would be ok

Our Daughter (No2) is an absolute star, caring for everyone she meets, and doing huge amounts of voluntary work for less fortunate.

Had we taken original advice, this world would have missed out on so much love our daughter both got and brings to others.

the power of Prayer is huge

  13. Wee story here for a quiet Friday night.

I’ve just come across a 64 minute you-tube titled St Kessogs Chapel: 1960’s video footage from St Kessog’s Chapel in Balloch. This included First Holy Communions, Corpus Christi Processions, Garden Fetes, and Social Nights etc.

I moved up tae this parish just after my 1st Holy Communion and pretty much grew up there. So it was a treat for me to look back at family and friends who are no longer with us. There was also as you would probably expect a Celtic connection.

As a result of a wee curate called Father O’Rourke who had been at St. Michael’s Parish prior to moving to Balloch we always had a healthy turn out for parish events especially the garden fete which was well attended by all in Balloch..

One of the fetes featured in the footage had an oul Ronnie crowning the gala queen while a young Evan Williams (he was with the Hi Hi at the time) is keeping goal for the penalty shoot out event.

There is also footage of an early Celtic Boys Club team complete with a young George Stein playing an exhibition game, can’t tell which one is George now but he was quite a big lad if my memory serves me well, and a centre half is seen clearing his lines with a big hoof up the park. The apple disnae fall far fae the tree lol.

Later on there’s a medal presentation ceremony where Billy McNeill and John Fallon are present, a young brown headed TT can be seen receiving his medal fae Billy.

There was much excitement that night and lots of cheering as our heroes entered the chapel hall. You have to remember most of the bhoys that night couldnae remember a winning Celtic team, only us older ones with the 7-1 one and even then none of us were at it.

So here we are SC holders, beat deidco in the LC Final in the Yogi 2 penalty game about 10 weeks earlier and at the beginning of that week had humphed the same mob 5-1 in the Tiny Wharton step over game. Ironically neither Billy nor John played in the latter, in fact Caesar had been absent for about 7 weeks with an injury, but that didnae stop the chapel roof fae almost coming off. Little did we know what lay ahead for us.

I got thinking about this while out walking the dug last night. The driving distance from Lanarkshire to Balloch if done right now using the M74 and M8 is approx 60 kms and the time about 45 minutes. Back on January 6, 1966, a cauld winters night, it’s got to have been a lot longer as there was no M8 then.

At the time if lived less than 10 minutes fae the Chapel, I know that to be so as it had a bell that rung 10 minutes before each Mass and I was often in the house when it started ringing and was never late. So unless I had a lumber that night I was probably sitting in the hoose while they were still talking with the wee Father.

And yet these players both in their early 20’s had given up their time on a dreich night tae make wee bhoys fae a fishing village down on the Bonnie Banks happy.

On the other hand I was serving my time then up at Wester Duntiglennan in Duntocher, which meant train, bus and a good wee walk up the hill past the Chapel and Glenhead Park, meanwhile the same players would just be turning over in their beds before taking a 20 minute donner along the road tae Parkheid lol

BTW I’m almost sure I saw a young EDB in the video.

  14. DD

Unfortunately I was down South after visiting the Bhoy Jude

Had to do with a Morning, afternoon and evening photo update

Will watch our game with the new Bhoy and his Mhum tomorrow though :-))

    Hail Hail

  15. Tontine Tim,

Just to let you know that a no longer young Fr O’Rourke is back in his beloved St Michael’s. I can remember him as a very young curate, who played with us in the street outside the original St Michael’s in Salamanca Street. A lovely lovely man.

  16. Shout out…….. for my youngest daughter and her friends heading for the Bad Ass Cafe at lunchtime tomorrow to see the game.

Told her to ask for a Celtic Supporters discount.

  17. Cowie

Jude Ryan is a great name.

Jude my Saint I pray to most for this lost cause.

Ryan my son’s name means little king.

    God bless him.

  18. Tontine

Saint Mary’s Duntocher is a fine Church indeed. Father Joe Mills recently retired was gifted the freedom of Clydebank by the cooncil. Great man who served his toon well.

Celtic daft priest who also served Drumchapel and Knightswood parishes.

  19. Alasdair MacLean on

    Delaney’s Dunky,

Just logged in and working backwards noticed you are on here.

I’m meeting, long story, boys from Edinburgh – who are Dingwall really – outside the Ross-shire Club at 11:30 tomorrow.

Nearing the opposite end of Dingwall High St from the Royal / National etc.

Speaking to the local based Celtic fans today – in their local accents! – they will be in the Celtic end….they say no chance of getting a ticket at this stage – BUT…….to cover for all the poor souls who for whatever reason couldn’t make it…” – (getting up at 05:00 on a Saturday morning in Glasgow being the least of the worries) –

Anyway, their tickets are usually for sale outside the National at the monument area.

On a real laptop just now – with the phone charging in the kitchen window…the only part of the house with mobile reception.

  20. Alasdair

Thanks my friend. Know the National. Was in there last October when we scored four in Dingwall. After Marcus was subbed off. ;))

  21. DD, brought back memories of Luton 1986, 12 hours shifts, 7 days a week.

Then the teleprinter says CELTIC, Champions of Scotland.

Still got the Champagne Cork from taht night in Luton FC’s Club – the big windaes you see on the tele.
