Next year’s Jackie McNamara, Rovers, Kieran

538

Of course, it happened in our ’67 anniversary season. Celtic were drawn away to Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup, as the Rovers dumped Queen of the South out of the competition last night. The tiny Lanarkshire club (arguably the smallest in Scotland) don’t have an illustrious history, but Jock Stein played more games for them than any other team. In Coatbridge, that counts.

I’m sure it makes sense for Kieran Tierney to have a shoulder operation while he’s out with an ankle injury but it’s very unwelcome news that the player needed the work. Despite upbeat reports I’m sceptical the op will not further delay his return. For a start, any notions of getting upper body work done are no longer valid.

Uniquely in European football, Celtic’s season is skewed to the start, not to when the prizes are given out at the end, which have become a meritocratic formality. With no European football after Christmas this season, the remainder of the campaign will be about getting ready for July and August, when the really important stuff takes place.

Kieran will miss three Champions League group stage games in total, last Sunday’s cup final and some atmospheric games to come; this will be the source of some regret to the teenager. In compensation he can look forward to picking up a league winner’s medal at the end of the season, and hopefully being in top condition for the qualifiers.

To be fair to Robbie Neilson, even when he was a success at Hearts he wasn’t overwhelmingly appreciated. This season it looks like the party’s over, so I understand why he would take a job at MK Dons which, on the face of it, looks like a dangerous step.

Dons are two points above relegation (to the fourth tier), without a league win in two months. The club has serious structural issues which any new manager would find difficult to compensate for with little more than a few fresh tactical notions. But at least Neilson can’t be blamed for relegation, should it happen.

He’s next year’s Jackie McNamara.

Paul67, found this a bit surprising in you article:

“With no European football after Christmas this season, the remainder of the campaign will be about getting ready for July and August, when the really important stuff takes place.”

Surely, there is the little matter of securing the title (for 6 in a row) and trying to avoid all pitfalls (SFA, MIBs, etc) on the way to a SC win and so the Treble)?

Hopefully, we are taking nothing for granted.

Also the transfer window should be interesting…

    Plenty to look forward to…

Sorry for the late reply, was out on dog rescue mission.

I agree crowds went up cos clubs had a chance of winning, baubles, that has evaporated now that we have invested and the hun are back cheating, it will be a novelty for this season but I will wager my last cent that crowds will drop off next and the subsequent seasons if the huns are still around.

More than anything were need major change, we will also stagnate if we stay in scotland with the present set up.

I have ideas that would entail telling uefa to gtf, but it would need clubs that have been excluded from the CL closed shop to go along, would they, I have ma doubts.

    Re the ffp

How do we know what rifc balance sheet will look like once the loans are converted into equity.

At moment we dont know how much has been loaned over the ffp period.

(Well dodgy with the lying kings previous form:)

You would think ffp would have been implemented in 12/13 especially after

    Liquidation.

Most industries would reset themselves to ensure such an event would not happen again alas the bias towards one team/company does not hapoen in the real world

Converting the existing loans to equity wouldn’t nullify the operating losses. They would need NEW money for shares. Failure of Res 11 was disastrous for them.

Very interesting wee nugget at the tail end of the STV pice; is this them saying Rangers are a new club?

When Rangers went into liquidation in 2012, their assets and memberships to play football were transferred to a new company.

This automatically triggered a three-year period where the Rangers newco could not participate in European competition. This applied to the 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons.

There is no barrier to Rangers applying for a UEFA Club Licence under article 12, which states any membership with a national association must have lasted “for at least three consecutive years”.

What the media and the SFA are doing is giving the recalcitrant 0.4% of Sevco shareholders are warning shot across their bows.

They are reminding/informing them that unless they vote for Res11, or whatever the number, there is little to no chance of Euro football next year, assuming they would otherwise qualify.

Super Ally may wake up some morning with Kris Kamara’s head lying beside him…..then a hurriedly arranged EGM will follow and another vote taken.

I wish I had copied or screen grabbed that bold section in my original post where I explained what UEFA were saying because the above gives me less problems than what I thought I read. What I think I read was something that supported the continuity myth via xfer of SFA membership.

Now did I get it wrong or was the above a re edit after I posted a link to above on Twitter read by STV?

    Hmm mm.

That section is not something I would have reacted to. It’s new club neutral if you don’t know Article 12. The letter from Traverso spells out UEFA’s position in that they do not recognise SFA Membership confers continuity in UEFA’s eyes.

PL on the SPFL: “Times have changed. It’s not like the Old Days — when we can do anything we want. A refusal is not the act of a friend. If Sevco had all the judges, and the politicians in Galsgow, then they must share them, or let us others use them. He must let us draw the water from the well. Certainly they can — present a bill for such services; after all — we are not Communists.”
