Nimmo Smith’s Black Cap

1213

I see a bit of debate on the blog this morning on Lord Nimmo Smith’s SPL Commission, which has retired to prepare its report.  In March last year former Rangers owner, Sir David Murray, insisted no Rangers players had “side contracts”, inferring there was no case to answer.  This line has not been peddled since.  Instead, various excuses are offered in mitigation.

BBC’s award winning The Men Who Sold the Jerseys documentary established that a large number of players received money in connection with playing football which was not recorded with the SPL and SFA.  Even Rangers counsel at the First Tier Tribunal conceded tax should have been paid on five of these players.

The real issue for Nimmo Smith is how to impose an appropriate punishment for illegal registration on this scale, which is consistent with punishments recently handed out to Spartans, Dunfermline and others, all of whom were kicked out of competitions, and fined up to a quarter of their annual income, for offences relating to single games.

For a couple of years now we have discussed the toxicity of matters surrounding the Rangers group of clubs.  Actions carried out during the Murray and Whyte eras put Rangers into liquidation with vast governance issues plaguing the game and the new club which inherited their player registrations.

On the assumption the SPL Commission concludes Rangers were guilty of fielding illegally registered players in hundreds of games, what would an appropriate punishment be?  Forget about stripping titles, or reclaiming prize money, both of which are merely consequences of the facts being established, not punishments.

I have total confidence Nimmo Smith will submit a report beyond reproach on whether Rangers broke the rules, but would he send for a Black Cap before handing out a sentence?  I’m not so sure.  Spartans and the rest might feel their 25% annual income fine for a single-match offence might become an embarrassment to some of the game’s administrators.

“Without fear or favour” was what we were promised last year.  Let’s see.

I think the excellent Kraftwerk (really dodgy name regarding secret orders etc) are playing at T in the Park this year.

It looked like Bayern Munchen were driving forward in a very cohesive unit, all working together in midweek. There were definitely big gaps defensively ( I only seen the first half against Arsenal in midweek) but I suppose they stepped into that place knowing they were going to score more than Arsenal.

A breathe of fresh air with no little attacking flair.

I’me hoping Bayern and Barca collide soon, it should happen as they have announced Pep as their new gaffer. Those 2 teams will attack and try and get goals, just like Celtic do.

  2. Reading about Burns here and I suppose people of my ilk do him a great disservice.

The man was a genuis, anyone who can write “My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose” is up there with the greats, also millions and I mean millions world wide sing “Auld Lang Syne” at New Years.

I actually have a table cloth here with the words of a Red Red Rose on it, I love it.

I only went to 2 schools at hame, St. Marys Alexandria and St. Patricks Dumbarton, we NEVER got Burns at school more chance Thomas Moore, Mrs TT went to only 1 school Notre Dame in Dumbarton, she never got Burns either, there was no chance the Siisters there would allow someone labelled as a goat shaggin whore maister to be taught in their school.

I’m not advocating a love of Burns on here, although he is well loved over here in the colonies, a few years back I was driving to work and the radio was bigging up Burns, they had some Scottish guy on telling wee stories and anecdotes, I thought I know that voice, at the end they said “see you next year Charlie, Charlie was my brother, when I confonted him being an angry wee Tim asking if he was a Perry, he just laughed.

BTW Charlie who is no longer with us was no Perry, he was a Knight.

  3. More slabbering coming up on SSN, “exclusive interview with Fat Sally, explaining his relationship with the bored!” Time to watch that paint drying!

    Gauny hurry up LNS!

  4. Pogmathonyahun – If only Maggie had kept bankrolling bankrupt industries that were always on strike, we’d all be rich on our British Steel shares.

In my childhood I remember well how she transformed into Robo-Thatch and stalked the industrial landscape, her laser-beam eyes vapourising blast furnaces and the atomic death cannon mounted in her handbag brought out to make miners weep.

When she wasn’t sinking innocent Argentinians who were merely sightseeing in a warzone, she was passing the Destruction of British Industies Act that forced factories to close because they weren’t allowed to make widgets anymore, because Maggie hated jobs and wanted to grind up the bones of the working classes to make her bread.

The only reason she won three general elections in a row is because she bribed voters in the south of England by stuffing £20 notes into their Y-fronts so they could afford to drink in Yates Wine Lodges. They were probably also hypnotised by Bernard Ingham and his uncanny mental powers. She hated the Scots though, and planned on having all Scottish puppies culled and their hides made into a splendiferous fur coat.

I’m pretty sure she also invented racism, wasps, and rectal warts.

The important thing 23 years later though, is that we grown ups aren’t apoplectic with rage, pinning so much resentment and bitterness on a politician who left office a generation ago, because when you think about it that would be a bit sad. (thumbsup)

  5. As regards German medical care, having been the recipient of some major spinal surgery that was botched-up by a German hospital that is supposed to be a ‘world leader’ I would say that it is easy to bash the Nash.

BTW, I still think we can get to the last 8 of the CL, but hey what do I know?

  6. There are two types of Celtic supporter.

Those who think we can make the quarter final.

And those who think we can’t.

We could arrange tonight’s quiz along those lines.

  7. Interesting stats on STV website, regarding red cards. Guess which ex-SPL team has had the most opposition players sent off? Blame is apparently placed at the door of “heated matches with Celtic”.

They still canny accept the blame, it’s everybody else’s fault!!

Don’t go breaking your teeth now…..

  9. When Rangers still existed and where above us in the League, their fans loved saying: We welcome the chase. For them, it had a nice ring of superiority and the smug magnaminity of the superior to his inferior.

Now,their oldco has gone but they cannot accept that and, to save them having to answer any questions about that fact, they have a new, favourite saying which is: You lot are obsessed with out Club.

I would argue that we are “obssessed” with justice but don`t they realise that every time they mention our obsession with them, they are talking about us? Obsession? Huh, both sides are as bad as each other 0:-)))

yep there’s some truth in what you say. But there is also the harsh truth that Thatcher (sic) marginalised the coal industry – happily importing the stuff to freeze the miners out whilst feeding the steel industry – only to happily not back or the boost that industry in an ever changing and modernising world. Similar to the captain’s of the ship building industry who sat back and watched amongst others the Japanese and the Swedes modernise and embrace 20th/21st Century advances to remain an important player.

Al the while Thatcher talked of ‘Service Industries’ – easier to control – but guess what? They’ve all been pamped too. Thanks to – guess what – technological advances coupled with cheaper alternatives in foreign climes – Thanks HSBC.

And what have New Labour, and Old Tories stuck by as their financial cornerstone? The housing market – only they base all their sums on the housing market in successful big cities… Like that London… Which is where they live when they’re being political. When they’re not being political they’re usually having Pimms at Rebecca Brookes’ farm…

  11. Phivis, I knew you would respond when Maggie was mentioned. My old man hated Harold ‘I’m alright Jack’ MacMillan. But Harold stood up to.Thatcher and told her she was selling off the Family Silver, he was correct, but my dad had passed away before he could witness Harold’s statement.

Today’s problems were not caused solely by Thatcher but by decades of political mismanagement by all parties.

Positive attitude pal. My mate smokes some 50 a day. Has had a couple of heart attacks, bowel cancer and lost a quarter lung. Any time I ask him how he is he always answers ‘ach, there’s nothing wrong with me’ ! He is cutting down some tree branches next week. Nothing but praise for our NHS. It will be hard but keep positive. Best wishes HH

Do any CQNers have current film recommendations for this weekend?

    =========

I wouldn’t recommend Les Mis. The singing is terrible and there aren’t many laughs in it. Oh, and it has the awful Sasha Baron Cohen in it too. Good story by Vic Hugo though and the acting isn’t bad. 6/10 from me.

In the last few weeks I have seen (in order of preference):

    Zero Dark Thirty

    Django Unchained

    Hitchcock

    Lincoln

All decent but ZDT gets it

After the by Hitchcock biopic I also watched on DVD the original Psycho and the remake by Gus Van Sant.

    The original Psycho is still

    brilliant.

  18. ps I hate Samsung phones. Well this one anyway!

The day Britain realises that the days of the empire have gone and that it is no longer a military power, probably before WW2, then we might be able to climb out of this massive pit we have dug for ourselves. The secret of success and financial well being is living within your means and if you are obese living within your seams. Personally I blame Catholic schools.and Weißbier.

Hatchet face may have left office over 20 years ago but we are still living with the damage she inflicted.

My guess is you were very young when she was in power and unaffected by her policies – unlike most people in Coatbridge – which is maybe why you defend her in the quaint manner that Sevconians defend the actions of the club they used to support.

  20. Anyone else feel the Europa cup seems to mean more to the English teams now than it did a couple of seasons ago? I’ve watched four games over the last two Thursdays and the teams involved were delighted about going through. Liverpool definitely wanted to win last night too. Uefa could tweak it to make it a much more meaningful tournament.

Just back from Coatbridge with my bhoy, we went to the Summerlee Heritage Park, then the St Andrews bar and then the Mint, would highly recommend all 3.
