Nine is coming, get emotionally ready for it

If Celtic were not so “relentless” © Steven Gerrard, Kilmarnock’s early goal could have led to a consequential result for the champions, but the win was never in any real doubt.  This is a team with oceans in reserve.

Jozo Simunovic conceded the penalty that led to Kilmarnock’s goal.  Thereafter, the central defender seemed compelled to atone, which he eventually did, with an assist for Odsonne Edouard.  With no shortage of talent and still only 25, Jozo will forever struggle against injury.  I cannot make my mind up on what I expect from the player in future.

While Celtic were beating Kilmarnock, news filtered through that Newco bucked the trend of recent away league defeats by picking up their first point from nine on the road.  Grinding out points like that are the reason Gerrard’s men are comfortably ahead in the Best of the Rest race; they lead Motherwell by 22 points.

It is now not matter a question of if, but when, Celtic win the league.  If Newco win their game in hand, Celtic will have a nine-point advantage, with a goal difference surplus of 20 over their nearest challenger.  ‘Nine’ is coming, get emotionally ready for it.

Copenhagen rested five outfield players in a 1-1 draw at bottom of the table Silkeborg yesterday.  This result allowed Midtjyland to extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points.  The 3282 spectators at the game will be significantly different to the packed Celtic Park the Danes will experience on Thursday.

We are not selling out.We have to go with these agreements. We cannot go on our own,no matter how much we want to.Would be far more lucrative to sell our own games worldwide, but at the moment,we are not allowed to.I was reading last week, that the top clubs in the EPL are now demanding this from the English FA,as they say Sky has run its course and is now an old fashioned concept.Driven by money,as they say they should be getting a lot more than say the likes of Watford. They gave figures stating eg,Watford V Crystal Palace were attracting audiences of around 1.5 million. They want their own TV deals. We shall see.

As a matter of fact, we are selling out. The Kilmarnock game was a sellout. We’ve sold out for Copenhagen. We’ve sold out our away allocation for St Johnston and Livingston away (despite picking up 3 stands at each ground).

The next game you can get a ticket for on general sale is St Mirren

They believe, with a lot of justification, they could make 8-9 times the current deal (already worth billions) with a subscription model and cutting out the middle man, be it Sky, BT etc.. It wouldn’t even have to be too far north of £10-£15 per month. ‘Premflix’ was the subject of the article I believe, though just a working example it is all very interesting and things are going to get very interesting one way or another.

SKY don’t give out viewing figures for the football. The advertising rates are based on the viewing figures and some of the leaked figures are terrible. A few seasons ago there was a leaked memo showing 30,000 people watching an EPL game on sky for which the cost was £4million. SKY recently proclaimed that the last Celtic Sevco match was watched by a record 1.5 million.. that is about the same as Naked Attraction on Channell four.. Celtic could do so much better if they had control over their TV deal

    Yorkbhoy,

I’ve previously suggested Celtic venture into the broadcast business and buy up the SPFL rights. I expect the initial outlay is sitting in the bank and a decent strategy would provide not only great experience but a decent profit margin that could allow the club to expand and improve the business model, after all we are in the business of entertainment

  9. Havent had Sky for 5/6 years.

I do invoke a now tv day pass on glasgow derbies.

But I have been making do with BT Sport[until they finish with SPL in may] and internet streams.

Despite my hatred of SKY …if they dedicated a channel to scottish football i would subscribe to it.

I refuse to pay towards English premier league football…not just out of protest..I really don’t like the product.I have enjoyed many english championship /lower league and FA cup games

Got to say I’m surprised at macjays response to the Rzt documentary, his usual first stop is Russian propaganda then making up excuses and two sides of the same coin drivel and the British are justified.

  11. Just looking with a smile on my face at the current league table. Then thinking if you took us and them out of it, it would be a pretty competitive league. The 3rd place team are 34 points behind us.

As Celtic fans, we are accustomed to success of some sort most seasons. Every now and again there are lean periods but, by and large, we rarely finish outside the top two places in the league and Hampden is regularly reached for finals.

I have no idea of how it must feel to be a supporter of a team that will probably not come close to winning anything during their lifetime – not a league, not a cup. So kudos to the supporters out there who go to games knowing they are likely to be going home disappointed.

We are so lucky to be born into the Celtic family.

I agree and think that individual clubs having control would be good for the smaller clubs. Hibs would have the rights to their home games so they would be able to sell the game to Celtic , Hearts etc and probably get a bigger payday than from SKY. They might not get the same money for matches against LIvi or Hamilton but overall the clubs would have more control.

I too have much respect to scottish football ‘diddy team’ fans.

They really are the lifeblood of the game.

However in a way we do know how they feel.

We have spent the best part of the past 50 years being a diddy team in European football terms.

Of course there has been the odd exception but that is akin to most of the smaller teams in scottish terms.

We make European football all the better for being part of it and dreaming.

No different to the supporters of St Mirren,St Johnston and Kilmarnock e.t.c in our own league

  14. I’m surprised the club haven’t ventured into screening our own matches live .and also surprised DD being the successful businessman he is not having it looked into . Imagine that .no more boyd ,McCann , walker ,proven, Crocker, Et Al putrifying the airwaves with there anti celtic agenda , what’s not to like . I cancelled sky years ago ,haven’t missed it .plenty sausages to be got .

    Jim time/yorkbhoy,

And with everything going online I expect broadcasting becomes far cheaper with broadcast licensing only applied to bigger games, we then sell the screening rights to. The likes of the bbc and any other broadcaster around the world who have any interest, for me it’s a no brainier only issue is initial investment to get it up and running and rights bought from the spfl

  17. I have friends who support smaller clubs such as Ayr Utd and Partick Thistle. I used to wonder how they enjoyed never winning anything (1971 excepted) but to be honest I think they may enjoy it more.Every win for them is a cause for celebration especially an away win which they often celebrate with a night in the pub.We are expected to win just about every game and some of us have that attitude so that when we fail to win its treated as a disaster.

  18. SIEMPRE,

    Yep,that’s the article I read.The figures could be staggering.For example,if let’s say,500,000 turned into Celtic v Aberdeen,worldwide,at 5 quid a head,that’s our Sky money for a season,in one match.

Not too unrealistic to think we could reach this figure.

  19. I would think if the club wanted to go down that avenue , surely the funding would be available , bad as sky are I would love us to be able to body swerve anything bbc sports . That sportscene is a cancer of a programme , how in the name of god do they get away with there anti celtic bias , they don’t even try to cover it up now . Getting shot of that programme would for me be a greater pleasure , then seek help for the men lurking in the shadow who have made that programme the disgrace it is .

If McGregor scores v Copenhagen he repeats his feat of scoring at least 1 in 5 competitions.

If Forrest scores against St Johnstone in the Cup, he matches that achievement.

No other players can achieve this.

    ======

If that was still possible, Celtic are the most advanced club in world football right now when it comes to blocking links on such sites. And we are that club because we’ve put the most effort into doing so, for whatever reason…

Given that most of those using the streams are probably a decent distance from CP in the UK or Ireland and can only pay for audio only or delayed coverage of matches the effort Celtic have gone to to block streams is an eye opener. And there is likely more to it than it affects attendances, given that out attendances are pretty excellent…
