Nir Biton, preparations for the ArenA

1993

There will have been tired limbs at Lennonxtown when the players resumed full training yesterday after their exertions on Tuesday night but they will still be desperate to take to the field at Firhill on Sunday.  This game is a necessary preparation ahead of the Amsterdam AreanA in 12 days.

We have an advantage for Amsterdam…..

Ajax are nip and tuck with a handful of clubs near the top of the Dutch league.  They have three home games in the league and cup before facing Celtic and the pressure is on to win each of them.  Ajax don’t have the ability to allow players extended recuperation time to ensure they are in pristine condition for Champions League duty, Celtic do.

I would rest everyone we don’t have good cover for.  This is also a game for Nir Biton to start.  The player needs to get back in the saddle as quickly as possible after Tuesday, he is also unlikely to see Champions League group stage action again this season.

After his international and other duties, Charlie Mulgrew would benefit from a rest.  We don’t have sufficient cover for James Forrest and Beram Kayal, so send them away for the weekend.

Use every advantage possible.

  1. Just a comment on the great Pukki good enough / not good enough debate…

I remember many years ago at Easter road and we brought on this guy with long hair and he more or less sold the game.. he passed the ball straight to a big Celtic man, Chic Charnley and he finished off the move with a wonderful finish for the winner.. I remember saying then that the boy Henrik would be a legend for us

Of course, that’s my version and I am sticking to it…. Truth be told he got pelters from the fans for that.

Point is.. don’t judge players too quickly. They play for us whether we fans lie it or not so give them your support and maybe, just maybe, one of these guys that are taking undue stick will turn out to be terrific for us too.

Stokes. Were converting him into a no. 10. Since when ? For whom and nothing to do with not sourcing one ?;-) skimping yet again as Tony will go for free …possibly Watt.

Clearly we only want to sell players. Not develop. We give them a stage only so we can sell them

I think the debate is more about what role a player is suited to. People who had watched him play previously claimed that Pukki isn’t a penalty box striker. Some people say not to listen to such opinions. I had seen plenty of Daryl Murphy before he came to Celtic and got slaughtered on here for saying we shouldn’t have signed him. Henrik had done the business at international tournaments so didn’t really fall into the unknown category, though I do remember watching his first game and being underwhelmed.

  6. Honestly, I swear if. Celtic win the Champions League this year, some people on here would say well we should have won it last year, and we would have if we did not have this board, they just hate the board, and some of them have even taken proxy on other peoples votes at the AGM, my opinion of them is they are trouble makers and certainly not the kind of people I would let speak for me, bottom line, they are attention seekers, my opinion only of course, and I await to sit at the AGM and watch them fall flat on there face, let’s wait and see if they are as good at a mike, as they are behind a keyboard, looking forward to see how they perform, and I will give my honest opinion on that performance, not that anyone would be interested of course, just saying like, cause it is my right.

I don’t think it was a deliberate tactic of ours to develop Tony as a number 10. If I can come across all hippyish, it was a more natural organic development of the player himself.

It happens all over the pitch, Booby Murdoch became a wing half instead of an inside forward. Stevie Chalmers and Henrik became Centre Forwards and not wingers. John Hughes became a winger instead of a centre forward. I bet Neil wishes Antony was still the more central striker of his youth.

  9. Looks like Hooper is going to be one of those players who’s ability improves now he has moved on.Miku picked ahead of him v Barca at CP and played very well,Hooper’s mis-control cost us the first goal in the Nou Camp.A good player,no more,no less.I’m sure this debate will crop up until we actually sign a proper striker to play the position.

Good ol Campbell to the rescue again…

He has stated a willingness to return to the club in the role of chairman, with further investment also a possibility.

The Glasgow-born tycoon has settled a long-running dispute with the South African tax authorities and is confident his return to Rangers would be approved by both financial and football authorities.

He was quoted on the STV website as saying he “knows for sure” his appointment would be approved and there would be “no issues” despite pleading guilty to 41 counts of breaching tax legislation.

King added: “I wouldn’t be here otherwise. I’ve checked this fully with the relevant people.”

He will meet with the Rangers board, which currently has just two directors – Brian Stockbridge and James Easdale – following the recent resignation of chief executive Craig Mather.

King is also expected to hold talks with the group of shareholders who want to see the appointment of new directors.

He added: “I’m back in Scotland for a series of confidential meetings to establish the best way to take Rangers forward.

“I’m here to see if I can get rid of the disharmony at boardroom level and between the board and the fans.”

Thats list does not sound so arbitrary to me. The list of sqaure pegs in round holes is much larger at Celtic than most CL teams especially those that did not become legends. Skimping big time.

  15. I think that we need to accept that a football team/club now referred to as Rangers (sic) will continue to survive with the history of the dead Rangers . No one in Scottish football (even our Celtic) is willing to establish that The Rangers are a new club

to address some of your other points.

Tony has us over a bit of a barrel. because we did not get our supposed A list CF signing and because of Tony Watt’s fall from grace (hopefully temporary).

We could not sell him last January or this summer for money because a) we seemingly knew Gary was going and b) we would not have fetched a lot for him given his form and lack of performance and chances in big games.

We could lose him for nothing. It happens a lot to clubs in peripjheral leagues, even to Ajax and Barca.

it will be a shame if he goes from us just as he is improving as a player but there is a problem in just saying “pay him what he wants” too. We have a wage structure and, good though Antony is, do you think he deserves to be the highest or 2nd highest paid at CP? And if we give him that rate, do you not think that a few others in and around the first team squad will want a wages bump too.

It’s a complicated equation and, deep down, you know that merely stopping PL’s bonus, desirable as that may be, will not change our lot to make our options much greater.

  17. eddie – still wouldn’t a boozy afternoon in the snug in there and a good snooze at home – ahhh middle age

  18. Moonbeams, I am one that thinks the Board is generally doing a good job. Do you remember the bad days, did you ever think then that we would be winning Titles at our ease, mixing it with the best Europe has to offer whilst those cheating Bigots would be liquidated and trying to start a new life with a crap Board/Team & Manager. They won battles over the bad years but we won the war. Would I love a Henrik or a Lubo in the team? Would I what. Everyone on here wants to see the best possible team representing Celtic. However whats the point in spending big money now, if we do we still won’t win Champions League if we don’t we will still win the SPFL. Use this Hun Free window to consolidate the Club, to try and build alternative revenue streams. Have the Club on the strongest financial footing possible before the Huns Mark2 get into the Premier Division.

Develop players when we dont even care about a,level playing field ? How does that work ????

  24. Loving the negativity on here as we enjoy one of the greatest periods in our history. Regularly competing with the very best in Europe, on an uneven playing field, and winning.

That Celtic takes people to such a depressed place when succeeding in so many ways is a source of amazement.

There’s been some negativity around Pukki regardless of the position he plays.. Didn’t Larsson start in wide midfield for us ? I remember him at USA94 because he scored against Bulgaria in the 3rd/4th play off but don’t really lay claim to knowing all that much about him other than him looking like the white version of Regi Blinker in their Feyenoord days…. And I stand to be corrected but I don’t honestly think we signed him as an out and out striker either.

“Thats list does not sound so arbitrary to me. The list of sqaure pegs in round holes is much larger at Celtic than most CL teams ”

It wasn’t meant to be arbitrary. The fact that there are players who failed to manage a positional change does not disprove the success of those that did, as you well know.

Since you did not answer whether you thought Tony was better suited to a central striker role or a support striker role, then I do not know where you stand on this specific example as opposed to any general rule.

I have no idea as to how many utility players other CL clubs have compared to us. Since you made the unevidenced assertion, I will leave you to do the research on it.

I am glad that the likes of Charlie can cover well in a variety of roles without having an outstanding position. That is good for us as a club even if it is not so good for Charlie. I do not subscribe to the view that you need 11 specialist players and I cannot think of a single senior club that operates on that principle.

That’ll be that rather nice 1872 talking :¬)

On Pukki, I may have inadvertently started it all of with the observation from Tuesday night that while all players can have a bad day at the office, he appeared to be indifferent to the game.

I’ve since reflected that he may have been carrying a virus, or going through some fitness programme or another that is hindering his conditioning and sharpness in games.

It doesn’t invalidate the observation, irrespective of how many Kilometres he ran, that he was detached from proceedings on the night.

He’s our most expensive signing in a long time, is exciting to watch when he’s on his game, and scores goals from all positions on the park. Put it down to disappointment that he didn’t show up on Tuesday.
