No. 10. Roulette wheel manager appointment

We played at Hampden on League Cup duty for the game after the death of Bertie Auld’s great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, Celtic players wore a number 7 on their shorts to mark his passing.  There was so much emotion around the club that week, Gordon Strachan later said that winning his first trophy as Celtic manager that day was second on his thoughts, they simply could not lose with emotions among the community already so raw.

There is a symmetry with tomorrow’s game.  It’s a League Cup semi-final, not the final itself, but Ange Postecoglou is also chasing his first trophy as Celtic manager and Celtic will wear Bertie’s number 10 on their shorts.  If they play with a fraction of the guile and fight that Bertie showed when he pulled on those white shorts, St Johnstone are wasting their time showing up.

Celtic have won 12 successive games at Hampden, St Johnstone won on their four visit last season.  The Perth side have struggled to score goals this season but remain a formidable defensive outfit who know how to win cup games, albeit against lesser opponents than Celtic.

That record of Celtic’s will count for little as for many who will play for Celtic tomorrow, this will be their first visit to the national stadium.  It is a big game for the captain, too.  Hampden has provided Callum McGregor with fond memories for years, he knows every inch of that pitch and can own it tomorrow.  This League Cup offers him his first opportunity to climb the steps to collect a trophy as captain.  I cannot see past Celtic tomorrow.

Newco provided their fans with a recognised name, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who starred for Rangers before heading to Arsenal then Barcelona.  Earlier this week, I suggested a manager should be, “tactically gifted, an effective communicator of ideas and instructions, as well as a working knowledge of a value market to strengthen your squad”.

van Bronckhorst was manager of Feyenoord for four years before a year in China.  His first act as manager was to sign a loanee already at Feyenoord, Colin Kazim-Richards.  Hmmm.  He won the Dutch League, the latter by a point from Ajax, who played 19 European games that season, 13 more than Feyenoord.  He resigned from Feyenoord having subsequently lost the league by 17 and then 21 points, without leaving evidence of being tactically talented.  An 11th place finish in China left no one stressing about his departure.  The Netherlands in not a value market, it is the most monitored country on the planet, every time a kid there bounces a ball, three scouts turn round and take a notebook out their pockets.

It continues to amaze me how appointing a famous player as manager turns otherwise sensible people into adherents of superstitious gambling.  Evidence van Bronckhorst will succeed at Newco does not exist, this is a huge gamble, all the man has is name recognition and a title eked out against an exhausted Ajax team.  Newco remain at their natural territory, the roulette wheel.

    To those in here who listen to BBC Radio Shortbread ….

     

     

    … You have my sympathies.

     

     

    Many years ago, I routinely used to get annoyed by so-called football guys on the radio.

     

     

    Absolutely did my head in.

     

     

    By sheer luck I found a solution.

     

     

    One day, I noticed a small round knob on the radio.

     

     

    Filled with curiosity, I turned this small round knob 90° Anti-clockwise.

     

     

    Intriguingly, that small round knob then made a discernible click sound.

     

     

    Fascinating really.

     

     

    Since that day?

     

     

    So-called football guys on the radio stopped annoying me.

    Bertie Auld of Celtic. (Apps 283, Goals 84) Midfielder. Integral part of side that won nine League titles, as well as the 1967 European Cup final. Prior to that match, Auld instigated a rendition of The Celtic Song in the tunnel, much to the bemusement of the Inter Milan players.

    When the wrong people take control of a football club, the fans interests slip down the priority list.

     

    As the old eejit Michael Kelly said,….

    Michael Kelly wasn’t the answer to, then, Celtic supporters issues. Or indeed, any other time.

    In a way, fans of Celtic fc has lost their football soul, and their political soul as well, with disastrous leadership of Labour Party descending to the ugly levels outlined above, not just that particular ladies case, but for over two decades of red Toryism from that party, Corbyn tried to change things, but it was too late and not militant enough, as the Celtic fans were years before already driven into the arms of an even more odious party than the Labour party had become, imho, not that the SNP invaded Iraq, or anything like that, I’m not sure if they and their supporters voted for that?, they agitated for Brexit in 2009 (I think?) along with Jo Swinson of Libdems, eye they did, masonicMSM have buried those juicy FACts very deep indeed, shocking i know but chamaeleons shouldn’t ever be trusted, never mind jumping into bed with them, but SNP was not renowned as a safe haven for Celtic leaning folk, if you stood in the Jungle at Parkhead for decades, then it would be very unlikely that you would lean towards a party, widely nicknamed as being the,

     

    “Strictly Nae Papes” group, was what I new them as, but if your not a socialist, and what it looks like to me is, several generations of folk that you once thought you new, were really identity political folk.

     

    When put to the test they collapsed like deckchairs, like Corbyn later did as well, being bullied into not bringing George Galloway back into LP, and failing to support the dreadfully treated Chris Williamson, and dozens of thousands of others, which proved to be fatal mistakes by Corbyn, which has saw LP fall into the hands of people who are rumoured to be being “lobbied” by dangerous people who want a LP with zero left wing initiatives, indeed left wing is now a dead duck, killed by the American Democratic Party, and the UK LP, both parties being “lobbied” by same group of people who’ve fkd up politics in UK/USA/5eyes countries all fkd by the same folk, that’s why its imperative to have an unbreakable leader of a 100% Working class, 100% Socialist party, like George Galloway and his WPGB, or all that will be on offer will be the road to the end times, if we’re not there already?

     

    Celtic supporters voting offshore tax haven politics, and dig and you’ll see what I mean that’s not what the essence of, Celtic fc, is about, a club with roots, but no barriers. No barriers must not be construed as, weak.

     

    The former Labour party voters were, in more than one sense, quite right to boot LP’s balls, good and hard, for they’re betrayal. Absolutely 100%.

     

    But what you don’t do, is what generations of Celtic voters have now done.

     

    Jumping out of the LP’s frying pan, into the deceptively, grateful arms, of the SNP fire, were you’ll be burned, fooled and took to the cleaners with promises that are not going to be foolfilled, and these failures are played down by an orchestrated, masonicMSM.

     

    I know there was no option. SNP, or the big bad Toarries, is no option.

     

    To say its SNP, or the Toarries, worked until 2017, when Jeremy Corbyn offered hope.

     

    Liverpool’s fans chanted Corbyn’s name every where they went, but of course, Liverpool’s fans didn’t have an, SNP, on Merseyside, to turn their heads for them, like what happened to Celtic fans.

     

    I’m not sure if ManUtd fans sang Corbyn’s name, but they certainly voted for him.

     

    But in Glasgow, the Parkhead stadium no longer has a radical far left leaning, Jungle, anymore, some would say, indeed, Kev J used to say that,….

     

    “Celtic fans balls fell off, as well as losing their soul, when the pish flowing, Jungle, was no more”….

    Just watching Stefan Johanson (remember him?) playing for QPR.

     

    I wonder if he ever thinks….I gave up playing for a world reknowned team in front of 60,000 idolising fans, playing in European competition, to play for a wee bit extra money for a nondescript team in front of 20,00 fans.
