No complaints yet with Uefa over Ashley multi-ownership

1127

Press stories yesterday that Newcastle United and newco Rangers would not be able to play in Uefa competitions in the same season have caused Mike Ashley considerable angst.  While it would appear few things are untenable for Ashley, having one of his clubs bow out of Europe to allow the other to compete is beyond what even he believes to be acceptable.

Newcastle issued a statement early today challenging the reports, which initially appeared in the Daily Telegraph, a newspaper Newcastle have banned from their premises.  The Telegraph reported that Uefa confirmed newco Rangers and Newcastle would be prevented from competing in Europe in the same season due to Article 3 of their competition regulations, which relate to multi-ownership.

I contacted Uefa this morning, who confirmed that the report in the Telegraph is incorrect; Uefa have made no such ruling.  However, this is because they have received no complaint and no investigation has taken place.  Uefa do not trawl looking for administrative breaches and will not investigate such matters unless asked to do so.  This issue, it appears, has not gone beyond the Uefa Media Office, and will only be passed to Compliance if a complaint is made.

I reckon Ashley will be comfortable dealing with the SFA, who he can delay and confuse until after newco’s next funding round, which will take place before Christmas, but he doesn’t want Uefa, or the FA in England, on his case, as either could jeopardise plans.

It’s incredible that months after Ashley bought into newco no one has complained to the one body who have the power to dissuade him.

The scenes outside Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday were predictable.  Craig Whyte stands accused by the court of public opinion of liquidating Rangers Football Club.  I know some of the bile directed towards him went well beyond what is acceptable, but you can’t liquidate a football club and not expect some push-back at the fringes.

The court of public opinion, isn’t making sense, though.  Rangers fans are angry at Craig Whyte, who, apparently, played hardball with the evil HMRC, then was cheated out of his rightful place in the Premier League by a combination of the SFA, the SPL, Celtic, the BBC and bigotry.

If it wasn’t for these dark forces, Craig would have used the [cough]perfectly legitimate business tactic of liquidation, to carry the same club through the crippling debt Sir David Murray had lumbered it with and back to its rightful place in Scottish football.

So if it’s all someone else’s fault, why are they so angry at Craig?  Genuine question.  He either released the club from Murray’s excesses, and was victimised, or he brazenly killed the club and tried to flog them a newco as though nothing had changed.

The only reason I can think they are angry at Craig is because our old pal Cognitive Dissonance is gnawing away in the background.  Whyte’s plan was to liquidate Rangers, present the SPL and SFA with a fait accompli midseason, and have the newco pick up the vacant league position the following week.

This was a horrible plan.  Rangers fans’ ‘No to liquidation’ campaign was correct.  Everyone else’s opposition to this aberration was also correct.

The fait accompli didn’t work.  The rest of Scottish football chose to step off the cliff into the unknown, although many Rangers fans quickly adopted Whyte’s – liquidation means nothing – logic, however they couldn’t bring themselves to accept the man himself.

The 2015 CQN Annual is churning through the system and will be ready to ship week commencing 8 December.  You can order yours here today.

Ronny Deila vows to fight Tonev ban ‘all the way’

The only recourse available to Celtic following the appellate tribunal that will sit this week to consider the original determination made by the SFA’s independent judicial panel is the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

“If there is nothing new in the Tonev case on Thursday, we will take it all the way,” Deila insisted.

“If you’re going to have this Tonev case as it is, with no more evidence, it’s going to be very hard to keep up this way of treating players.

“I’m worried that Tonev’s career will be tainted because of this. He’ll be forever known as a racist footballer.

“But it’s not even about the footballer, it’s about the person. I wouldn’t like that on me if it wasn’t true. It could ruin a human being’s life and I don’t like it. If there’s proof, we’ll accept it, but I believe Alex.

“I’m not a lawyer and I would speak to the club about where we take it. I can’t understand this case because it’s not fair when it’s word versus word.

“If it’s clearly proved to the public that Tonev is guilty, I would never excuse it. We really don’t like racism and if our player did a thing like that it would be unacceptable.

“We were part of the case, we were in there so we know what happened. They believed him [Logan] instead of Alex and, for me, that’s not fair. You need to prove it, you can’t judge people without proving it. It can’t just be your mind thinking it.”

    “It’s Like A Family here” says Ronny-D………..

The emotional connection Ronny has developed for Celtic has been channeled through assistant John Collins and first-team coach John Kennedy.

The pair are not just two former players of the club, but lifelong followers of it, and to Deila that has genuine significance. “It’s been so important to have them,” he says.

“Those two have the passion for Celtic that every supporter has. It’s like a family here. And because of that, I have to protect it like I would do my own child. That’s a good feeling.”

Rangers FC score with casino plan

Rangers Football Club have been granted planning permission by the city council for a £120m casino and hotel complex beside their Ibrox ground in Glasgow.

The club has predicted that it will create about 2,000 jobs and help to diversify the Rangers brand.

The UK Government plans to allow one regional or “super” casino, which can install Las Vegas-style machines with the potential for unlimited prizes.

Glasgow council wants the regional casino to be built in the city.

The Rangers project, which includes flats, a community sports facility and a health care centre, has been given outline permission by the council’s planning committee.

A council spokesman stressed it did not automatically follow that if Glasgow won the right to host the regional casino, it would be located at Ibrox. Tuesday’s decision was made solely on planning grounds and gambling licence issues would be discussed later, he added.

The decision puts Glasgow significantly ahead of the rest of the UK in the race to secure the regeneration that a regional casino licence will bring

    David Murray

    Rangers FC chairman

Rangers have entered into a partnership with Las Vegas Sands Inc. whose president William Weidner said last year that it intended to bring “fun, increased employment and enhanced public facilities” to the area.

At the centre of the development is a 168,000 sq ft leisure and entertainment complex on land beside Ibrox and the nearby Albion car park.

The Gambling Act (2005) originally included plans to allow an unlimited number of regional casinos but this was reduced to one in the first phase to minimise the risk of an increase in problem gambling.

    Independent panel

The “regional” casino proposals – which have also become known as “super” casinos – allow for complexes larger than the UK’s existing 134 casinos.

The Gambing Act created three categories of casino – “regional”, “large” and “small”. An independent panel will advise on suitable locations for all new casinos and will produce a list of recommended areas for each category towards the end of 2006.

    Ibrox

The complex will be built beside Rangers’ ground in Govan

If Glasgow is included in the shortlist for the regional casino, it will then be up to the city’s licensing board to consider applications to run the complex.

One of these will come from the Rangers/Las Vegas Sands partnership.

Glasgow City Council confirmed last week that it planned to bid to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to host the regional casino.

But its leader, Steven Purcell, said: “Anyone who wishes to operate a super casino in Glasgow will have to fund programmes designed to prevent excessive gambling and assist those who have gambling problems.

    Local jobs

“We will be in competition with cities from across the UK, however we believe that we have not only the infrastructure, but the best economic case for bringing a regional casino to Glasgow.”

Rangers chairman David Murray said: “The decision puts Glasgow significantly ahead of the rest of the UK in the race to secure the regeneration that a regional casino licence will bring.”

Local people would have the opportunity to apply for at least half of the predicted 2,000 new jobs. Unemployment levels in the Govan area are currently about 14%.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive Lesley Sawers said: “A development of this type would bring important opportunities for our members and for the people and the city of Glasgow.”

He added: “There is no reason why we should not benefit from being the first location to have a regional size complex in the UK and we would welcome it here.”

  14. So the boycot is no a boycot then, dearie me, whit they like………..

As you will know, the group took the very difficult decision back in May not to renew our season tickets due to the selfish, malicious and borderline illegal actions of our club’s current and previous incumbents. This was a decision echoed by nearly 15000 season ticket holders and the crowds at Ibrox so far this season have reflected the feeling of many Rangers supporters.

We watched with hope and expectation as Dave King submitted his £16 million offer of funding in exchange for a majority stake in the club. We then watched with resignation but not shock as Mike Ashley and his friends within the Board room blocked this move and instead pushed through Ashley’s £2 million emergency loan secured against Rangers assets and on the premise of complete Board control. Like all other supporters, we wanted a clean break from people like Charles Green and his murky investors, but it is clear this isn’t going to happen.

It therefore brings us to a crossroads, as a group and as individuals. Mike Ashley has his grip firmly on the throat of our beloved club and nothing and nobody will make him remove it, as has been demonstrated in his time in charge of Newcastle Utd. It has thrown up a pertinent question which must be answered by not only us but every Rangers fan.

Do we maintain our boycott for potentially years in the hope that someone saves us? Or do we elect to support the team on the park and explore other ways of enforcing change at Rangers?

After much discussion we have elected to follow the latter path. As of 03/01/2015 we will be returning to the stands on a permanent basis. This is not a gesture of support for those now in charge of our club, nor is it an admission of defeat. It is simply a change of tactic.

As a passionate group of supporters whose best attributes lie in what we achieve in and around the stadium on a matchday, we feel hamstrung by our absence and therefore the group needs to go back to being present within Ibrox.

We have tried to boycott, to fall in line with other fan groups who have done their level best to encourage change within the club. But in reality all that has taken place over these past few months is a strengthening of Mike Ashley, Sandy and James Easdale, David Somers and many others’ positions within Rangers. It’s the sorry truth.

We would like to make it clear that we will not be attending the League Cup semi final as a group, and feel it would be wrong to take tickets ahead of fans who have been attending games on a weekly basis. As we won’t be attending as a group, it will make it impossible for us to pull off a display. We would therefore ask all Rangers fans to do their bit by making our end as colourful as possible, with flags, banners, streamers and anything else they can. We will however be planning more displays between now and the end of the season, and look forward to bringing some noise and colour back to Ibrox.

Although we return to Ibrox on a permanent basis we won’t be doing so as supporters of the regime. Yes our money will be going towards their bonuses and onerous contracts in the short term, but the Union Bears will throw our weight behind another path towards long term change and that is fan ownership, and more specifically Rangers First.

Rangers First is a Community Interest Company which was established at the beginning of this year with very simple goals; to gather together the financial clout of the Rangers support, purchase shares in the club and ultimately put it back in the hands of those who matter. Rangers First already owns over 500’000 shares in RIFC (roughly 0.6%) without any real offline publicising. As a group we hope to support them in the ways that we do best as they move forward towards greater awareness and support for fan representation and ownership.

Of course we urge all those who stood with us in BF1 over the years to ask themselves the same question we did and decide what the future holds for you with regards to match attendance. But we will not try and influence your decision in any way. It’s an individual’s choice to make.

What we do urge every singly Rangers supporter to do is visit http://www.rangersfirst.org, learn about the initiative and sign up. Put the money you used to spend on Rangers merchandise and funding Ashley’s empire of zero hour contracts into something worthwhile. The strength of our support should not be measured or remembered by how many of us turn up at Ibrox or elect to stay away in protest, but rather by the lengths we will go to right the wrongs of those before us and stand shoulder to shoulder with one common goal; delivering the Rangers we all deserve. We owe it our children and grandchildren.

If you would like to join the group in BF1 for the second half of the season then please send the following details to transfers@unionbears.co.uk or as a message to the Union Bears Facebook page:

I think Kris may be leaving(if Neil’s Bolton can afford to offer a 2 year deal then it’s a no brainer for him) and a great servant he’s been, but he has experience of of this match and tends to enjoy playing at Tynecastle. With Stefan likely moving back to cover for Mulgrew, I reckon this is more likely that Commons will start. I’m not sure this game suits McGregor(at this stage) and think Hearts would be more worried to face Forrest or Tonev and I think we need to go on the outside, threat the overlap of the right wing to stretch their open gaps inside. Wilson could return from the a hammy injury and cruel as it may be we need to test his fitness with pace if he returns. If he does play, I’d imagine they won’t want him isolated and may play a deep line or deeper. This caution should suit our high pressing game and hopefully encourage errors from them as we camp in their half.

I often get it wrong but as I said looking forward to it. Put a few a small stakes on -2-3 and -4.

ps I reckon the union bears are only back as they’ve realised they might not tickets for the league cup match against us and, at the end of the day (or at night….) they have direct bigotted behaviour they’ve missed out on. I believe this is their only motivation, a chance to shout 2 and half years of bile and pent up aggression at the unseen Fenian hand who (obviously) did all of this to them. With them moving from their ludicrous superiority complex to being victims of everything they need this release. It’s going to be a very dangerous match for our supporters, our players and the Club in my opinion, if, indeed, it goes ahead. I cannot stand them.
