No excuses

206

It’s unfortunate that our next opponents had a clear midweek while we played on Tuesday, but we’re not ones for excuses around here.  We have the strongest squad in the country and should have more than enough in the tank to get through our next two games.

Cameron Carter-Vickers’ fitness well be a concern for Brendan Rodgers. The central defender has nursed a hamstring injury since August; never quite fully fit and often unable to sprint. We can lament the lack of development we’ve achieved with our central defenders at a later date.

  1. So to seperate myself from the `flock` I`d take the medicine of a successful hun trophy season if it generated the requisite levels of anger to make the lazy Tims angry enough to remove the unneeded rich wasters on the executive and let real Tims run Celtic…if real Jambos can run Hearts off of season ticket, sponsors, players sales monies, etc, then why not smart cute and ballsy Tims?

The excellent [KevJungle ] explained in great detail how simply this could be achieved so go back and check his posts and you`ll get the picture…that`s if the bent out of his depth Mod hasn`t deleted them.

Nothing changes as long as the lazy 60,000 financially guarantee that the Old Firm is alive and enthusiastically facilitated by Celtic PLC…Rangers prices onto Sevco tickets etc, etc…this is why a season filled hun kick up the arse for Timdom might tip the scales from lazy Tims eyes…which would be a welcome kick up the arse imho…ugly…but welcome!

If the Mod has removed these [KevJungle] posts then that should identify him as a bent PLC plant.

  2. TONTINE TIM @ 4:02 PM,

With all due respect we now have a decent timeline and stats to assess our recruitment performance.

When Peter Lawwell came in as COO twenty years ago things were very different at Celtic.

He was quickly promoted to CEO and one of the first things he did was to stop buying players for MO’N.

Now the reasons and logic of that can be debated.

However in the last ten years things have radically changed, we’ve had Rangers dead and the Champions route to the UCL group stages as a big advantages.

Those two things were game changers.

We needed fresh impetus, creative ideas, cutting edge methodology, we got none of that.

The last decade has seen an explosion in European football with Celtic left way behind.

One of the reasons for this is our squad management, we were using an outdated method of recruitment and even then not doing it very well.

The lead states; “we’re not one’s for excuses around here” this is blatantly wrong, we have a list as long as your arm of excuses:

    We can’t afford quality footballers

Playing football in Scotland means we can’t succeed

No decent footballer will come to Scotland

We have to sell our most valuable players to balance the books

No Scottish Club can succeed in Europe these days

We must hoard money for a rainy day as the Club will go bust

And we can all name a dozen more, excuses that Ange and Sevco and our balance sheet have consigned to the waste bin.

They are only good excuses if you want to play the risk averse businessman living high on the hog on Easy Street.

They are not very credible excuses if you want to create a competitive football Club.

So how good have our signings been since Rangers died, all two hundred plus in that time?

Well, we can see, how many of the players that were said weren’t good enough went on to have good careers at a relevant level?

That will tell us, if it was the recruitment or some other reason.

Less than twenty percent of the players made it with us, the eighty percent flunked it.

The players that flunked with us, did not make it elsewhere at a decent level, with a very few exceptions that prove the rule.

That is a huge indictment of a system not fit for purpose.

When Ange came in, we went down a different recruitment route with different outcomes – our recruitment at that time changed tact, our recruitment was a success.

A year or so ago we changed back to our failed model and our recruitment has once again become poor.

That is not a coincidence, it is the model that’s a failure.

We are now back to first team recruits that aren’t cutting it and bloated squads not fit for purpose.

    Hail Hail

  4. Guys,

Don’t have a scoobie about the potential huns new loan signing, but it can’t be worse that a certain player of ours on a very lucrative contract who can’t even make the team photograph.

Not getting the old warm and fuzzy from this article Paul.

I fancy my team for Saturday (I always do I suppose) but I think it will be tough.

    Westcraigs – respectfully …. what Celtic40me said.

Over the last 12 years we don’t have a track record of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

    Sevco’s new loaner?

Two points from me if I may.

    1. Sevco doing what Sevco do. Win at least one of the bookends of the transfer window. Unsurprising.

    2. Minority view. I think the boy is a talented footballer. He clearly couldn’t handle the physicality of the EPL. Might be same here but, equally, he might do well. Getting hold of a player someone was willing to pay £35m for (even just for five months) is a shot in the arm for fans.

  6. Ironic that his fee is touted as a waste of money (who knows what he’ll bring) yet we still have McCarthy on the books.

We should concentrate on our own failings (and where, playing staff, coaching staff, boardroom) and rectify them first and foremost.

Were definitely half of something, imo.

  7. I can’t imagine Paul 67 et al would relish John Kennedy going up against Philip Clement.

Back our manager, because that is the odds on alternative

    HH.

I think Celtic went down the Aaron Ramsey road, in the bad old days, long before the Loan Rainjurz.

  9. 18 Yard Man

The competition is in Qatar over 4 weeks and is definitely under 23.

The media seem to have either not done homework or sought to inject further false fear and negativity into the Celtic fans. As they do.

I sincerely hope Sevco signing Silva proves a costly flop , but I think we risk being accused of lacking self awareness if we don’t recognise the need to seriously tidy up our own act in this window .

  11. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 28TH DECEMBER 2023 5:06 PM

  12. bournesouprecipe on

    GLENDALYSTONSILS

Yip, no dilemma for Celtic we need a short term striker, and a longer term signing also. With players called up to the Asian Cup we definitely need a striker, the question is will he be the same player for both needs? The £72M in the bank is closer to £100M, and the ‘you buy cheap you buy twice cliche’ shouldn’t apply to Celtic in January or next summer.

The last thing we need is squad cover we need the right players and it’s high time we flexed financial muscle. We’ve blown a gap, the only way we’ll re-establish it, will be through showing who is boss, and making targets not waiting for EPL flotsam.

  13. Hail Hail all,

To be Celtic daft is not exactly a slur and in fact it is considered a compliment amongst ourselves. However at times it highlights a lack of rationality in the football fan resulting in them buying overpriced merchandise and stumping up the money for a season ticket because they feel a strong commitment to the club. Those Celtic fans should look around the country, as someone mentioned earlier, to see what the likes of Hearts daft fans are doing to have a bigger say in how their club is run. Let’s make no mistake, a season-ticket holder is a member of a club. Look how successfully the English fans knocked the SuperLeague on its head a year or so ago when Man Utd daft and even Chelsea daft fans held demonstrations. All the big clubs, and maybe especially Celtic PLC, are in debt to all of those hardened supporters who have bought all the football clobber these last 30 years and the fat cats know this. Supporter Power is upon us and I hope it coalesces well at Celtic Park, not so much to remove the board but to influence their decision making.

  14. I remember us signing Chelseas flop… A big guy called Sutton….. Nothing went right for him at Chelsea and I thank God we splashed out 6 mill for him……

Some players just fit a certain club……

I’m sure our older supporters can maybe recall other’s that did a job for us.

Yes we have squandered a hello a lot of cash and getting little in return……

Making the same mistakes and all that…..

    Quite…

There seems an incredible blame culture simmering around Parkheads Gates.

    Very unbecoming many will agree.

It now seems obvious that our Chairman had nothing to do with the recruitment of our Manager and is very unsupportive of the endeavour.

We know our Executive, Captain and Major shareholder were key to the recruitment of our Manager.

This schism is at best very damaging and at worst a disaster for our Club.

We need to get behind the team, the whole team including the manager and coaches.

They like their statements down Ibrox way, it makes them feel like a big, progressive club . In the heady days of their predecessor, it was Tore Andre Flo , nowadays it’s Aaron Ramsey and Silva .

If reports are to be believed , we were also approached by Silva’s agent but said no thanks . Hopefully the last transfer window has taught us lessons about spending our money more wisely. Unlike Sevco, we don’t need grand ‘Emperors new clothes’ signings but we do need quality.

  28. TONTINE TIM @ 5:57 PM,

Well thanks for being so candid and sincere, obviously they are many with similar views, and as I remember your views from the first time around then it doesn’t surprise.

Likewise Celtic40me, while not being apoplectic at BR coming back, he wasn’t far off it.

Yet, are we really in a situation where we want the Secovians to win on Saturday and to get ahead of us in the league to make our manager look bad!?

This has gone way beyond reason.

Though it now looks obvious there are people in important positions at Celtic Park that seem to think just that.
