No hiding places at this altitude

The first half of our Champions League campaign saw games against both our Pot 1 teams (Dortmund, Leipzig), one of our Pot 2 teams (Atalanta), and Slovan Bratislava, who were the highest ranked Pot 4 team – immediately below Celtic in the rankings.

Before a ball was kicked, my expectations at this stage was to be sitting on 3 points, while Opta told us finishing with 9 points would be enough to qualify in 69% of simulations.  A lot has changed since.

There are some ominously strong Champions League sides below us.  Atletico, Real Madrid, Milan and Bayern Munich (all on 6 points), with PSG on 4.  Nice, though it would be to see them drop out, we should expect all four to finish strong.

Opta have not updated these specific stats since this week’s results but if they do, the chance of qualification on 9 points will be significantly less than 69%.  10 points, which they previously allocated a 99% chance, is now likely to be the cutoff, with a lot less certainty than at the start of the season.

Tuesday’s performance was so impressive that we have earned the right to look forward confidently, but we are not alone.  Brugge’s win over Aston Villa last night put them on 6 points ahead of their visit to Glasgow this month.

They had a poor start to the season but their only defeat since September was away to Milan.  Matchday 5 could put us looking at a seeded position, or we could be among those looking ominously at Atletico, Real and the like.  There are no hiding places at this altitude.

Not everyone has this stress, look out for our Coefficient Monkeys to earn us some points in the lesser leagues tonight.

Brilliant article on BBC site regarding what’s needed to qualify. 10 points 99% to make the top 24 and the play off round.

16 points required to make the top 8.

Not out of our reach if we can repeat Tuesday’s performance.

Interesting stats as you say – cheers for posting!

Taking the worst possible scenario and we are targeting the ten point mark – it means that we retain an active interest until the final game – sixteen points is not out of the question at present, I agree. HH

As I was watching the game the other night, the pride inside did swell

As the champion’s league music was sounding, Something great was in the works, I could tell

The roar from the fans, the look on our players, especially CalMac

I knew that my team was set up not to defend, but attack.

The bhoys gave them no time, to dwell upon the ball,

As the players pressed and harried, to the voice of Brendan’s Call

Goal # 1, a corner whipped in with speed and such precision,

The crowd went silent, CCV not happy with his decision.

He tried to win the ball but it deflected off his heid,

Leipzig quietened us briefly, as they took a very brief lead

Up roared our fans, the ball was moved to the wing

Inside came Nicholas, swerving, in off the post, 60,000 sing

From that minute on, the game was in the bag

Even though we were tied, the Germans began to lag

10 secs before the whistle, the players working hard and shutting down,

Reo to Greg , whiff by Daizen, Kuhn again was crowned.

The Germans trotted off, they couldn’t keep the pace

You could see that they were beaten by the looks upon their face.

Second half it started the noise was such a din,

Our Bhoy were just as good, and now with their second win

Kasper pulled off quite a save, to stop them get a score

And then popped up wee Reo, a player we all adore.

What a night my fellow fans to wear the white and green

To be a part of something special , the best team I have seen

Thanks you Brendan, players and fans, thank you for this side

For making Tims smile in parts that are near and those that are world wide

The blame game has started. But anyone who cares to look will see where blame should really lie.

Any half good Democratic ticket that remembered who they were meant to represent would have beaten Trump. They forgot what ordinary Americans wanted, especially ethnic minorities.

Too many woke policies that most Americians couldn’t give a f@ck about. Ideology before the economy.and reality was the mantra.

Too many university educated policy makers still fighting infantile student battles.

Even now the liberal elite stating that Trump took the votes of , get this ” Uneducatrd ” working class.

They still don’t get it. You dont need a university degree to be educated. Totally insulting.

Too many rich entitled celebrities telling ordinary Americans what to believe and how to vote.

Make no mistake, this is an own goal and we will all feel the consequences.

Just to add the final result is almost identical to his win over Hillary – is the US is not ready for a woman in the White House – do they see that as woke also? HH

  7. Darwin,

If the right woman was on the ticket, with the right policies then the Democratic party would have won.

They forgot about the peiple for idological reasons.

A poor candidate with no time to fully prepare.

While the incumbant president fiddled the ordinary people burnt. The peiple saw that the president had lost it and the vice president was part of that gang tjat tried to fool the people.

Im quite sure if Michelle Obama had run the result would have been totally different.

    SAINT STIVS

You’re not exactly correct with your analysis of the play-off round ties. There is a draw of sorts.

Clubs in positions 9 to 16 are seeded to play a home 2nd leg against positions 17 to 24.

However, positions 9 and 10 are in the same pot. Same with 11-12, 13-14 & 15-16.

    Similarly with 17-18, 19-20, 21-22 & 23-24.

Teams are drawn from each pot and paired with a team in corresponding pots as follows…

    9-10 v 23-24

    11-12 v 21-22

    13-14 v 19-20

    15-16 v 17-18

Clubs from the same nation are kept apart where possible. Eg if positions 9 & 24 are EPL clubs, 9 will automatically be drawn against 23.

In the extremely unlikely event that 3 of the 4 in a paired group are from the same nation, the draw will determine which 2 play together.

So if Celtic make the play-off round we will know which 2 clubs we will be paired with in the draw.

  19. Greenpinata.

I think you read Professor Richenbauds article wrong, one of the things he rails against is the US racing to the bottom in culture wars, blame and looking back/chasing nostalgia, the term ‘woke’ is one of those nondefined malleable definitions that is used to fit all/ portray classify folk, people countering a view, boxing them in incorrectly as tho its against the popular view,it can’t be defined,it’s a one size fits all shiteswipe against a particular view

as before I have asked you for a meaning,I am wary of all who use it,Neil oliver,George Galloway who should know better,

100 years ago would deciding not to put children up chimneys be woke for example.

To me it’s used to individualise a whole community of people who deem to oppose the popular view.

We will get a definition oot of ye yet :-)))

*like you I tend to bite my tongue when dealing with politics plus I find a lot of the parishioners in my church don’t like trump but equally don’t like the wee holy father, too left wing for their liking.

I have 2 daughters with political science degrees and are left wingers, but don’t wear the number 11 jersey specs, their wee sister lives down in the bible belt now, when she went for an interview she was told that it was a Christian office, oh that’s fine as I’m Christian too but then added actually I’m Catholic, not sure how that went, but she says all day long they talk about the Lord and have been praising HIM since Tuesday night.

Like you I love what this country has done or my family but on the other had I have paid my dues through blood sweat and tears literally, which is why I have a very nice life, in saying that I have lots of friends and family who have been equally successful at hame but have tae admit I am only here as someone up there wants me to be just like he wanted my grandparents and great-grandparents to cross the Irish Sea, and it was the threat of “murder fear and famine” that caused them to leave then.

As for tangerine heid he is what we would call a balloon,, it is no secret that a well known Catholic billionaire gave him a list of 8 names to choose new Supreme Court Justices from, while another chose his running mate for him who IMHO will be the 3rd Catholic president, whether he becomes on this next term or the one after is up to fate.

Talking of the person who once labelled trump another hitler, vance isnae his birthname but grandparents which he adopted 10 year ago, no big deal he was raised in a conservative, evangelical branch of protestantism although NOT an active participant in any particular Christian denomination but was thinking very seriously about converting to Catholicism, 5 year ago, he did after being influenced to convert by billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel.

10 year ago, he was married in an interfaith marriage ceremony as she, Usha, is Hindu and he Christian, she clerked for a year for Brett Kavanaugh, who was then an appeals court judge in Washington, then clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts for a year, he just didnae pop out of thin air.

Oh, and Nimarata Nikki Haley (née Randhawa) who challenged trump for the nomination is the daughter of Sikh parents from the Punjab.

Now you NEVER here of them as it NEVER suited the purpose but when Kamala appeared on the scene it was conveniently mentioned that NOT only was she Indian, the daughter of a professor whose work in isolating and characterizing the progesterone receptor gene has stimulated advances in breast biology and oncology, but a Jamaican American economist and emeritus professor at Stanford University, known for applying post-Keynesian ideas to development economics.

It was tangerine heid that brought the latter to the fore by labelling her blaaaaack as he pronounced is for the benefit of the maga extremists, which led tae the Nuremberg rally at Carnegie Hall where they were implored to get out and vote

  22. I must say I took a secret delight when Real Madrid stuck five goals past Dortmund in the previous round of the Champions Lge after the Celtic experience. Then followed act 2 on Tuesday night when Leipzig strode into Celtic park full of German arrogance and inflated superiority and took a right drubbing, we wiped the floor with them.

Brendan and the squad will not be taking anything for granted after Aston Villa’s defeat to Bruge who come to Celtic Park in a few weeks time. Although the glow of victory is still there it’s business as usual with a tough game at the weekend.

same for taylor, who the grumblers were at in the whole first half, but he did create the goal, they seemed to miss his very good bits.

  28. AT,

Like many words, the term ” woke” has evolved over the years.

Nowadays by common consensus it means , political correctness gone mad. But you know that.

Of course the elite classes would challenge that definition. But I am not in the elite class. I am unashamedly working class.

To answer your question; It is not politically correct to put children up a chimney. It is just not correct.. it happened, but it was wrong then and would be wrong today.

Im sure some on here with numerous ologys would be able to give you the chapter and verse in chronogical order how the term woke has evolved. But is that really necessory, or can common sense prevail.

    Cheers and HH.

  29. Liam scales will get plenty of games because its a squad game and Celtic will play plenty of games, the game is a 16 players game now due to the intensity and the volume of games.
