The first half of our Champions League campaign saw games against both our Pot 1 teams (Dortmund, Leipzig), one of our Pot 2 teams (Atalanta), and Slovan Bratislava, who were the highest ranked Pot 4 team – immediately below Celtic in the rankings.
Before a ball was kicked, my expectations at this stage was to be sitting on 3 points, while Opta told us finishing with 9 points would be enough to qualify in 69% of simulations. A lot has changed since.
There are some ominously strong Champions League sides below us. Atletico, Real Madrid, Milan and Bayern Munich (all on 6 points), with PSG on 4. Nice, though it would be to see them drop out, we should expect all four to finish strong.
Opta have not updated these specific stats since this week’s results but if they do, the chance of qualification on 9 points will be significantly less than 69%. 10 points, which they previously allocated a 99% chance, is now likely to be the cutoff, with a lot less certainty than at the start of the season.
Tuesday’s performance was so impressive that we have earned the right to look forward confidently, but we are not alone. Brugge’s win over Aston Villa last night put them on 6 points ahead of their visit to Glasgow this month.
They had a poor start to the season but their only defeat since September was away to Milan. Matchday 5 could put us looking at a seeded position, or we could be among those looking ominously at Atletico, Real and the like. There are no hiding places at this altitude.
Not everyone has this stress, look out for our Coefficient Monkeys to earn us some points in the lesser leagues tonight.

Wk 1 there were 3 wins and 1 draw
Wk 2 there were 5 wins and 2 draws
Wk 3 there were 4 wins and 3 draws
Wk 4 there were 5 wins and 1 draw
These don’t seem excessive when you consider the number of games played (72)

Do you remain working class if you forego all the benefits and fripperies that were previously the reserve of the Upper Classes. That is limiting to a working class person. Sure if a working class man or woman makes good and then pulls up the ladder on all the others who try to trod the same path, I’ll join you in calling them out.
But every Worker and Socialist man and woman who strived to advance our wages, our terms of employment, our standard of living, and our access to education to better health, better education and , indeed better food and drink, sought to advance the lot of Working people not to limit it or to say it’s all right to drink more beer but don’t touch the foreign muck or “poofy” drinks! It’s all right to read a newspaper with Tits but not a book, especially if it’s non-fiction. It’s alright to give women the vote but don’t ever lose your “masculinity” by lending a hand around the house or trying to think about their needs.
I came from a working class family- a far from perfect one. My mother and sisters worked as hard as my father and brothers. We stand with them but we are not their protectors or any old-fashioned idea. My pals and I listened to and told racist jokes as kids and young men in working class areas. I understand why we did it but I’m not proud of it and I don’t see it as a defining character of my class or upbringing. I’ve seen too many middle class and upper class tossers and sexists and racists to believe these vices belong to the working classes.
I did ok for myself in life and can afford to insulate myself and others from the pangs of hunger and poverty that I once knew. But I’m not gonna be distracted by what the new Right tells me to be concerned about. How often has someone transgendering or admitting to being gay impacted on your life or those of your family? We are aware of one trans-gender rapist in a Scottish prison but how many non-transgendered male rapists are there? If we’re being rational we might consider cutting off the offending parts of that gender before they do any more harm, rather than reacting to the “Squirrel’ cries about the threats of Transgender folk.
Same for Muslims and Migrants. The Irish Catholics once occupied the territory that they now do, as convenient scapegoats and distractions.
There are genuine arguments to be made against Unfettered immigration and about over-indulging children as they imitate others in expressing fashionable preferences, but there is no argument to be made for laughing and sneering at them for feeling confused. The new right tries to portray its “Libertarian” ( a term as poorly defined as woke) philosophy as anti-elitist. Yet they’ve just elected a New York Billionaire and a Yale Lawyer who sneers at the working classes where he once slummed it for a week or two.
I have no love or admiration for Biden or Harris but I’d punch Trump 2 or 3 hundred times before I’d get distracted onto them.
As Mr. Robichaud said in the piece that was posted earlier- this is not a class thing. This is about whether we want to promote Decency or Vulgarity (and I don’t mean Dirty Jokes- they’re fine).
Nobody- absolutely nobody- is stopping you from doing decent things. You can only limit yourself. You can only give yourself an excuse to indulge in the behaviour we once did, because the new Nazis are not gonna stop at Muslims, Immigrants, Transgenders, Homosexuals, Elitists and Liberals.
