No more season highlights for St Johnstone

110

The highlight of Steven MacLean’s six-month stint as St Johnstone manager was earning a draw at Celtic Park in August.  His team defended for most of the match but had chances to snatch all three points in the second half.

It was a rare positive note for the Perth side before MacLean was emptied out five weeks ago.  Since then, they beat Kilmarnock, drew with Motherwell and beat Ross County, all at home, before losing 1-0 at Tynecastle last weekend.  All but the first of those results were achieved under Craig Levein, who appears to be this decade’s Mark McGhee – picking up jobs no one can quite believe.

My biggest concern last weekend was the lack of urgency we showed against Motherwell.  After an initial flurry which failed to produce a goal, Celtic’s passing was too passive.  We have our finest goalscorer in many years, who is growing stale on a lack of service.  Get this right tomorrow or risk more dropped points.  We don’t want to provide too many season highlights to St Johnstone.

  1. Good morning all from a still chilly and snowy Garngad.

Going to pub for game and my knee has been killing me (waiting on a knew one) that much yesterday tha my bliddy right knee is now throbbing as well and left hamstring… think it will be taxi to pub.

    3 – 1 to Celts.

Is the game defo on or is it in doubt?

  2. When I was growing up in Scotland it was use your heid, think for yourself, question what doesn’t seem right. In academic terms – critical thinking – could get that on any good night in the pub where I grew up, hope it is still the same.

I fear that the events of the last decade have created an environment where reality and common sense are blurred with conspiracy theory tin hats brigade and a world full of anxiety. Bad things happen, all the time, throughout the world. How we think about why this happens and how we respond to this has changed.

Social networking brainwashes far too many in our communities, reduces critical thinking. 419 is just one extreme example but many people are now under the spell. Believing what we hear instead of asking why the fuck would that be true.

Funny old world we live in.

New Zealand Maori have a similar philosophy to Scottish based around community or whanau. Alba gu Brath is until judgement, Taiki e is a call to action, both are aspirational but pragmatic, “what will be will happen”.

    Make it happen.

What has this got to do with Celtic or football. Reading CQN lately has been a hard read, a sign of the times maybe.

Keep it simple, keep the goal in mind, quietly and surely, together we will achieve great things in time. Celebrate our successes.

And the point is …looking forward to the January window and next summer transfer window to have another go at the champions league. Stand up for the champions. In the meantime, the Celtic players with the jersey need to keep on winning and keep us dreaming, and we need to inspire them too. Keep the faith.

    Hail hail

  5. For those asking.

I am about 40 miles North East of Perth and the Golf Course is still open. Winter greens. Even so,that would suggest the Celtic game will be OK.

Considering this is a Match Day, the Blog is very quiet. Are some posters getting their wish?

  6. Brendan`a more measure approach to the much-maligned Board:

“When I think of how this board has stabilised the club over many, many years then it’s very hard to knock what they’ve done here.

“There’s a high level of intellect on the board which has made the whole operation sustainable. Dermot Desmond is someone who wakes up every morning thinking about Celtic and he goes to sleep every night thinking about Celtic.

“What the club has always tried to do is not to spend beyond their means.

“Of course, it’s always about the next level and that’s something which is a big decision for any club, but if you want to improve at that level then what

“That’s something that Dermot and the guys who run the club know.”

His ` you have to do is invest.`is given as a straightforward fact for improvement rather than being accompanied by the rather fanciful idea that it would lead to ‘ success ` in the CL.

I sense Celtic crisis is here and bedsheets will be next for mocked club who you can read like a book – Hugh Keevins

Noticed this headline, I don’t read the crap he writes more often than not one of the bloggers will destroy it later.

  8. Oops. This should have come after `then what `…… you have to do is invest.

“That’s something that Dermot and the guys who run the club know.”

What is he on about? What crisis? Is a toilet blocked?

  10. PB

I couldn`t help myself and read the article ! by Keevin`s standaards, it wasn`t too bad.

Here is an example of a bit with which I might even agree !!

” one of, if not the most savage criticism of the board, is that they prioritise supremacy over Rangers ahead of funding a team fit for purpose in Europe. Conversely, if Celtic fail to finish above Rangers at the end of the season that argument will be unable to be heard over the sound of the demonstrators outside the ground. “

  11. Celtic: Hart, A Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Taylor, O’Riley, Turnbull, McGregor, Yang, Kyogo, Palma.

Interesting paragraph by him, although even a broken clock gives the right time twice a day 🤔

  13. Is Turnbull on in case of an early penalty …

    Prices of pens in both games , St j / us 13/8 , them /st m 7/4…

Think I’ll back their game , to paraphrase ten thirty , theirs is guaranteed…😜😁

Turnbull’s ability to shot outside the box gets my vote. We will see two banks of five defenders today!

  15. For those that might be interested, following last nights Euro Draw, you can apply for tickets for some games by first registering on the UEFA Euro 2024 TM Portal. After which you can apply for up to four tickets for your chosen games. Got to apply by December 12, choose category of tickets, and confirm. No guarantee you will get any tickets, or even at the price chosen, so you do not need to pay anything up front. A lottery basically, but there are big stadiums out there and a lot of games.

    Great birthday present!

Lets hope for a great result today to go along with it!

  17. It felt fantastic to pull the Jersey on and see my mirror image. The Jersey is either too small for me (not) or I have grown to fill it..

  18. “That’s probably the angriest I’ve ever been at half time as my time as a manager. We were nowhere near it. The second half, there’s much more energy and tempo. Some players want to be too comfortable and just do enough and that isn’t good enough for a club like this. Mikey was good, if he can improve his tactical idea in the game, his pressing and his understanding of where he has to be then you can see the talent he has. He was bright today, positive and made a contribution for us. The standards at this club are high, I said to them at half time, with the greatest of respect to St Johnstone but we’ve went a game and a half against them and we haven’t scored. But we got better in the second half and we had to be.” – Brendan Rodgers.
