No one wanted Celtic from Pot 4

1078

Let’s be honest with each other, there’s a bit of a leap between our European performances in recent seasons and the standards of Champions League football. My expectations for this season’s tournament hasn’t seen me check out accommodation options in Cardiff in May.

With that in mind, if we’re going to fall short, let’s do it against genuine quality opposition, some of the best players and tactically organised teams in the business. Barcelona, Manchester City (think Pep, but with more money) and Borussia Monchengladbach will bring this to Glasgow over the next few months.

Over our 15 year Champions League lifespan, Celtic surprise on the upside more often against better teams than against relative minnows. The biggest disappointments came in Scandinavia, not Iberia.

When the group stage finishes in December, we will faced enormous challenges. Players will have stretched themselves to lengths they didn’t know existed. What we know for sure, is that none of the other three teams in our group will have wanted Celtic from Pot 4. This is a hard draw for everyone.

Huge game tomorrow. Anything less than 100% and we’ll drop points. Enjoy it.

    That’s right. Forgot about that.

If we play with the same style we did against Motherwell, Be’er Sheva (1st led, 1st half!) and St. J. then we should be able to score goals. It’s the other end of the pitch I’m more concerned about…!

Your constant references to people grooming kids is beginning to look like a bit of an obsession.

To be honest it doesn’t reflect well on you, or for that matter, the board in general.

I’m not sure if you have an issue, or you just think you’re being smart, but it’s inappropriate for a whole number of reasons.

  3. If there are fannies daft enough to pay £50 to watch the tribute act then its serves them right.

As it stands I’m still not going to go ( I have a season ticket) but looking forward to the CL enormously.

Alas, it doesn’t really matter if we lose 0-3 in all three home games and 1-6 in all three away games, we still have in excess of £20M in the bank just for getting into the competition. Admittedly each point gained in the group stage is worth an additional c.£½M, but anything gained there will be regarded as a bonus.

The main thing is that we enjoy each of the six special occasions and that the players learn from the experience, so that hopefully next year we can improve on this year’s outcome, whatever that may be. I expect Celtic to finish bottom of the group (“Champions route” qualifiers usually do), so if we get into the EL that will also be an unexpected bonus.

Most important however is that we don’t lose any of our focus or energy on the domestic front, starting this very weekend, and that we absolutely ensure that the SPL is won yet again to provide our entry pass into next season’s CL qualifiers, so that we can have another opportunity to get a share of that pot of gold…

  9. I think our back four with Erik back should solidify our defence, and in defence of C G it would be nice for him if a consistent back four has settled in, IMO.

Sticking my neck out here but Aberdeen are a poor side. They have 2 or 3 decent players but I expect Celtic to hammer them tomorrow. In fact the team that started in Limerick would beat them.

    5-0 or 5-1 wouldn’t surprise me.

  12. Very good price for the Adult Package.

Concession price is dreadful. Asking pensioners and those TD67 has an obsession with being groomed (weird man who I believe PS should keep an eye on closely) to pay £75 is very poor indeed.

As an example, a family of season book holders, two adults and two kids between 13 & 16 years of age, who are not on the home cup scheme will be asked to find £350 before the 8th of September. At least Celtic could do is offer a home Champions League option to allow these fans to split the cost over 3 months.

There is always a downside. But £33 for a working adult for the CL is a great price (as long as they are not on zero hour contracts).

bring on the games and bring you Palastinian flags.

  13. Good day fholks.

    – Stein had promised that hus team would “attack and keep on attacking until we win this game”,and his players were as good as his word. The Italians probed forward delicately from the kick-off,and Simpson was, perhaps,a little fortunate when a shot from Mazzola hit his legs and rebounded away. But,two minutes later,Celtic gave notice of their intentions when Johnstone set off on a run, which tied the Italian defence in knots, before rifling in a fierce shot which Sarti managed to deflect with his arm.

But in seven minutes,Jim Craig tackled Capellini in the Celtic area. The Italian went down as if he had been shot, and Inter were awarded a penalty.Craig can remember one of the defining moments of his career as if it were yesterday.

“I thought I had started the game quite well, and I had got a couple of tackles in,and then came that penalty,” he says.”Jock had said in the team talk that Capellini would play up,against me,and he did.He also said that he was very good at turning inside so,when he came up,I ran forward to make sure he couldn’t turn inside. If he tried to turn inside, then he was going to run into me,which is exactly what happened.I think very few referees would have given a penalty at that stage of a major final, but I think there was maybe a wee bit of nerves in his part, too. There was no deliberation on my part. There is a deliberation to get in his way and stop him from turning back, but when I see what they get up to nowadays, this seemsa minor detail.”

Nonetheless, referee Tsenscher was convinced by the Italians, and Mazzola scored with the penalty.Celtic were a goal down with only seven minutes on the clock.

“We thought,at the time, that we had been done an injustice with that penalty,” says Billy McNeill.”I think that helped us in many ways.We had nowhere else to go but have a blast at them. After they scored, they fell back and,to be honest,John Clark and I really didn’t take any further part in the game;we could have gone and watched it in the stand. The Italians were so intent on defending, that all we did was gather the ball, pass it five or ten yards, and start another attack. They had this catenaccio thing ,and i’m convinced that suited us.We had nine players in our side who had all scored goals, and we had 83 minutes left to score them in.”

“Where they got it wrong was that they underestimated us.They didn’t think we had enough skill in our team – like the quality that came from the midfield through Bertie, and Bobby Murdoch.I think other teams had just blunted themselves against them previously, and I don’t think they believed we could break them down.We hit the woodwork umpteen times, and we should have had at least one penalty – and Sarti had a magnificent game.”

from LISBON LIONS by Andy Dougan

  14. If CG hadn’t saved that penalty we’d be looking forward to Internazionale, Sparta Prague and my wife’s home town team… and perhaps a decent opportunity of progressing to the next round.

But I’ll still take one win in 6 games in our CL group!

  18. Afternoon all,

Loving the articles and comments section as per usual – A great way for an overseas Tim such as myself, based in Galway, to keep in touch with what like minded Hoops fans based in Glasgow are thinking.

I’m definitely more of a “lurker” than a “poster” but each to their own and all that craic.

I’m going to throw it out there that I am actively looking for tickets for the Sevco game in September. I’m not in a position to buy a season ticket due to buying a new house and a post 17 days Euro2016 trip which crippled me emotionally, physically and financially!

All I would ask of fellow CQN-er’s is that, closer to the time, a ticket becomes available and you are looking for a true fan to give the ticket to, keep me in mind. I can meet the night before or the morning of the game, and buy you a pint to say thanks.

If not, you will see me outside Parkhead pre kick-off with a nice cardboard sign looking for tickets!

  22. If we invest say half of the CL income, and we can well afford to, it’s extra income we weren’t banking on, and we got an extra £8 mill ish from the pre season comp, investing £10 on three decent players is a very reasonable assumption, we can look forward to CL football again next season, do the same again and it could be CL football for the forseeable, but we must invest, not to do so will see us back to the Ronny years.

I well understand there is a balance to stick to, I have never been an advocate of spending money we don’t have, but to squirrel away money in NOT the answer, we have spare cash, lots of cash, we need to spend it wisely.

This year has shown us that speculating to accumulate does actually work, take note Pedro, there is no reason not to spend now, or in the next window, none whatsoever.

Did a bit of research into HBS before we played them, consensus is that Ogu is their main man. Commented to those around me in first leg that I though he was excellent early doors before he picked up an injury when fouled by Sinclair. You could see he was hobbling but obviously so valuable they didn’t want to take him off. The guy is a player, estimated value £2m would be a snip.

I see your point, but there will be a lot of adult Celtic supporters who will not get a ticket while kids who are season tickets will at a much reduced rate. I fund 3 adult and a concession ST. I’m on the ticket scheme so the 3 – £99 and the £75 will come off in three chunks. I really don’t have any issue with that for the product on display. unfortunately in life some things are too expensive and you have to miss out. fortunately I’m in a position to help my family, which pays back those who are no longer with us who helped me out when I was younger and poorer.
