No one wanted Celtic from Pot 4

1078

Let’s be honest with each other, there’s a bit of a leap between our European performances in recent seasons and the standards of Champions League football. My expectations for this season’s tournament hasn’t seen me check out accommodation options in Cardiff in May.

With that in mind, if we’re going to fall short, let’s do it against genuine quality opposition, some of the best players and tactically organised teams in the business. Barcelona, Manchester City (think Pep, but with more money) and Borussia Monchengladbach will bring this to Glasgow over the next few months.

Over our 15 year Champions League lifespan, Celtic surprise on the upside more often against better teams than against relative minnows. The biggest disappointments came in Scandinavia, not Iberia.

When the group stage finishes in December, we will faced enormous challenges. Players will have stretched themselves to lengths they didn’t know existed. What we know for sure, is that none of the other three teams in our group will have wanted Celtic from Pot 4. This is a hard draw for everyone.

Huge game tomorrow. Anything less than 100% and we’ll drop points. Enjoy it.

I honestly didn’t think we were going to make the CL this season, I expected BR to settle into the job and really go for it next season, am delighted to be proved wrong, over the feckin moon in fact.

I don’t know what the boards expectations were, but I reckon they were not expecting CL this season either.

We have been told that the EL is budgeted for, so we now have the cash that we can improve the team big time, as said Kolo and Scotty have improved us no end, I can only imagine what another three of the same caliber would do to the team, as I said the proof is in the pudding, to get quality you have to spend, we obviously spent on Brendan and his team and it’s paid off handsomely, we must have about a spare £10 mill presently, we could still squirrel away £8-10 mill for a rainy day and all them bonuses :-)

Whatever, the suits really have to back the manager, the supporters have done their bit.

Your attempts to obfuscate are on par with the sports media taking about your old firm pals. It is very funny indeed to read you digging more tunnels.

Just admit your use of the phrase was inappropriate for any Celtic blog?

I asked TD67 and The Green man to cease and desist earlier on today as did (I think natknow); The Green man has obliged; TD67 has decided to continue so my way forward is to scroll on.

I would suggest that it’s of the brick wall variety at this time and would suggest that is the only way at the moment.

If our board have prioritised zero net spend over the footballing team then we are ducked.

We are fast becoming irrelevant in the emerging football landscape.

Brendan has given us a a rise from our previous European decline.

Do this board have the vision or will to help him continue our ascent?

    Past suggests not.

Maybes speculate to accumulate is the wrong phrase, we don’t have to speculate, we have the cash, we have the extra from the CL over and above what’s budgeted for within the EL money, the £7-8 mill from the pre season games, the extra season book sales must be about £4-5 mill, and the extra £10 mill we were losing a season without the huns, unless Pedro was telling porkies about that, so we are minted this season, all we have to do is invest it wisely, and I trust Brendan to do that.

I was not expecting CL this year either, I’m not expecting us to do well in the group (obviously hope I am wrong) but I would hope some investment so that next year we will be in a stronger position than this year and for that to continue. We are financially light years behind a lot of the big clubs but we should be able to improve year on year with just fine tuning.

  14. BMCUPW,

I too realise that TD67 is a Celtic supporter. In fact, I tend to agree with his views on the flag-waving (as I’ve said on here). But I DO wish he would listen to your sound advice about the use of the word “groom”.

    TD67,

Please listen to what BMCUPW has been advising. Imo, he is right. You’re causing quite unnecessary anger.

A MAN’S third pint explained in a friendly but firm voice that he would be staying out for the rest of the evening, it has emerged.

Tom Logan believed he was enjoying one or two quick post-work drinks before heading home for dinner. However the tone of the evening changed when a third pint appeared in front of him.

The third pint said: “Well my friend, it’s Wednesday night and here we are.

“Looks like you won’t be heading home before closing time, and I’d kiss goodbye to thoughts of making that lasagne – we’re looking at a doner or maybe a ‘chicken pieces times two plus chips’ meal deal.

“I believe you’ve met my friends fourth pint, and fifth pint. They’ll be along shortly.

“I think sixth pint might even put in an appearance. Remember him? He’s the one who makes the ceiling move back and forth like a menacing ocean, while you lie in bed consumed by regret.

“Anyway, better drink me up, or I’ll go flat.”

It added: “Tomorrow is going to be awful, just awful.”

‘You, too, can destroy your own country,’ Farage tells US

NIGEL Farage has told an audience of Trump supporters that the power to completely devastate their own nation is in their hands.

The former politician told a Trump rally in Mississippi that they too could wipe away decades of stable economic growth on nothing more than a petulant whim.

Farage continued: “In the UK, which is in London where the Queen lives, we too had politicians, economists and experts preaching from on high about the absolute disaster we faced if people voted for their petty and small-minded prejudices.

“We ignored them, they were right, and now I’m here to urge you to forget the polls, vote for a permanently tanned man with a long record of fcuk-ups, and plunge your nation into depression.

“You too can balls up your nation in a single stroke. Plus you all have guns, so I can’t imagine how much more exciting your societal breakdown will be.

During his US trip, Farage also has a meeting about playing a butler in a new Adam Sandler film.

I think there is money for BR to spend.

However it might be limited and the wages might have to be off the books before he can spend.

All tha talk was of a smaller, more active squad with promotions from the Dev / U20 squad if required. Some have gone, some are going but we still have a bloated senior squad full of Klingons lifting a wage but sitting in the stand.

BR’s team selections and squad lists point to who he wants to move on.

We are a long way from a 23 man main squad.

Not sure how BR worked in the EPL but given the constraints at CP that is how he wants to work up here.

The situation at CB is the squad / funding issue in microcosm.

Would not be surprised to see JS move on as he would be no loss to the current squad and he could generate cash and free up some wages.

Rumours and hints on this over the past month.

If he does go then BR is horse trading like a true professional on speed.

  24. Why would Brendan wish to manage a club where his board doesn’t want to back him regards squad strengthening? Is this to be taken as weakness on his part?

I think much of the problem is that we’ve been unable to bring the squad size down to a reasonable level during this window.

    Only my opinion of course.

  25. BT

This season has shown the suits that spending that wee bit more brings you that big bit more.

They are money men FFS, thay have to see this, cos if they can’t or won’t, we will be back to no CL footy and struggling to get EL footy, Oh and we won’t have a manager the likes of BR and the ground will be half empty again, I could go on.

Hopefully the great moustachioed one has seen that the strategy was failing big time.

killie are without a centre back for tonight’s game. blatantly contrived, we’re back to watching out for how the ‘other side’ do tonight, which will of course right itself when the fixture list places new ragers in front of the top 3

so, how many stories are coming true

    – for now, the story that the spfl is not the same without rangers: look, we’re back and we’re on the top just as we said it would be and all you murtherwell, ict, hertz, aberdeen and hamilton fans are so glad the order is restored because ……. ehhh well I don’t know.

    – the refs will show sporting bias to help the new ragers be on top which restores the order blah blah blah

Tonight, one poor team of triers will win.

  28. garygillespieshamstring on

Why is it that every time I read a post that talks about a midfield player setting something oh fire I immediately think of Ronnie Glavin?

  29. Regarding the article — interesting to see how things shape up.

MON in his pomp had BM dancing about on the park because they got a draw at CP.

OK so that was a world away — lots of things have changed in 12 years.

But it still an active memory for me and points to where we can go.

BR needs to aim for this attitude.

Couple of gaps in the squad but he has made good progress.

The bar has been set but it is always easier when someone has blazed a trail.

If only we had a Tardis to bring back VW and VvD and then we would be in business.

We are close to making good progress — “They” are out there.

Just need some desire to make things happen.

    Hopefully DD is fully engaged.

Want into the EPL — stuff MC in the CL and people will listen.

Arbitrage — £10 mill spend to release £100 mill of value.

    DD — your call.
