MORITZ JENZ played his part as Schalke 04 set an unusal Bundesliga record in their goalless draw with Josip Juranovic’s Union Berlin in the German capital yesterday.
Amazingly, it was the team’s FOURTH successive scoreless stalemate as they made the history books while halting their opponents’ winning league sequence.
Jenz, who saw his season-long loan at Celtic from Lorient cut short last month, was a stand-out in an encounter that offered little by way of goalmouth action.
CHEERS…Moritz Jenz is congratulated after his goal against Ross County on August 6 by Giorgos Giakoumakis, Callum McGregor and Josip Juranovic. Astonishingly, the Hoops captain is the only player still at the club.
Juranovic, who joined the Berlin side in a deal that could bring in £10million to the Hoops, was an unused substitute after playing a starring role in the 0-0 draw with Ajax in the Europa League first leg in Amsterdam last week.
The Coatian World Cup Finals right-back and the towering German were team-mates at the champions at the start of the campaign.
They paired off in defence for the first time when the Parkhead men won 3-1 against Ross County in Dingwall in the second league game of the campaign.
Jenz marked his debut with the second goal and followed up with another in the 5-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park the following week.
However, his temporary deal in Glasgow was ended prematurely after Ange Postecoglou brought in J-League youngster Yuki Kobayashi.
Schalke remain bottom of the top flight with 13 points from 21 games while Juranovic’s club are third on goal difference as they share the 43-point mark with champions Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
