No white flags or towel throwing in Leipzig

88

I remember going to Ibrox when news filtered through that we were so under-strength, left back-come-central defender, Charlie Mulgrew, was playing left mid.  The portents were ominous but Charlie and the rest of the team did well in adversity.  A similar attitude will be needed tonight as we will be without Scott Brown, Tom Rogic, Leigh Griffiths and James Forrest, the latter’s pace being a significant loss.

Leipzig are fifth in the Bundesliga, a point behind Bayern Munich and on a run of form which has seen them win four and draw two since their Europa League defeat to Salzburg, scoring 14 for the concession of three in the process.  It is likely they are stronger than Celtic, but they are not as good as Salzburg, or the Bayern Munich team we faced a year ago.

You and I have seen this movie dozens of times but the outcome is not inevitable.  We have also seen St Mirren and Kilmarnock take points of a vastly stronger Celtic this season, while Hamilton came close.  Celtic can get something from tonight if they can defend as well as others in the SPFL do against us.

No white flags or towel throwing, let’s see if we can defend maturely.

  1. I see the dimensions and grass length at Murrayfield are to mirror that of Hampden. Craig Levein will be sick as a pig.

  2. Don’t care what the score is tonight as long as we win well and no injuries.

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

given how crap the huns and the sheep are, it wouldn’t surprise me if hampdump’s grass has grown (or been allowed to grow) an extra inch or two….

  4. Yes, we have seen this movie a dozen times and more, but unfortunately my head says a heavy defeat is on the cards

    Heart say’s 2-2. tho….

I think majority of us have the same head vs heart scenario.

In ideal world I would love to see Gamboa, Christie, Kouassi etc play like absolute demons.

However my fear is we will roll over and get tickled

  6. We will lose and probably by a few. We have not prepared to even compete at this level. The business plan is a failure and designed only to capitalise and stay ahead of the Club playing out of Ibrox. The Board do not have the knowledge or expertise or even the willingness to advance the Club beyond our existing limitations. We are an abject failure, irrelevance and occasional embarrassment at this level.

  7. Even at full strength I wouldn’t fancy our chances of getting anything from tonight’s game, with half a team missing we have no chance. Heavy defeat is most likely but we may get a surprise.

  8. Ahhhhhhhhhhh, don’t you just love the smell of all that positivity ;-)

Tough game in what is a really tough group. But we have to face the challenge.

My concern is that we don’t seem to learn from our previous failures. We still ball-watch, fail to pick up off-the-ball runs and our ball retention is not good enough. When we concede we usually concede another almost immediately.

Come on Celtic – get it sorted. If we play to our full potential we can start getting results in these games.

Here’s the answer to the question of who to replace PL.

Step forward, young David and get that CV fired off asap.

  11. I don’t expect Leipzig to be much better if at all than the Borussia Munchengladbach team we drew 1 each with in Germany 2 years ago.

However the sad indictment is that we are markedly weaker as a team / squad compared with Celtic of 2 years ago.

  12. Are we expecting this shape tonight :

    ———————-Gordon——————————–

    Gamboa Boyata Simounovic Tierney

    ————Kouassi Ntcham—————–

    — Morgan McGregor Christie —

    ————–Edouard ————————

  13. I thought he might drop one of the front three and put malumbu in with kouassi and macgregor and ntcham in toms place .

However as someone will point out (probably that bugger WITS) thats why i’m not manager ?

A narrow defeat and i’ll be pleasantly surprised , a draw and i’d be happy and a win my flabber would extremely gasted…..

BT , i wont manage down for the game pal :((

Looks like Sevco are about to set a new world record – managers of European opponents sacked just before they play them.

Maybe another one – average league position of their opponents is eleventh.

    What does WITS do/know anyway.

He’s just a ghuy who goes around feeding mars bars to horses to make them go faster, then tells us on here so that some of you can make ?or lose!) a bob or two.

  19. You never know maybe a miracle can happen tonight. Supposing all these fringe players get their danders up and play out their skins? It could happen!

Could be a job for St. Jude but I’m using him enough just now for MAH.

  20. Benkovic is the biggest loss tonight.

I cant remember a time this year when we had our best 11 to pick from

  21. St Stiv’s at 1:15pm.

sorry mate, didn’t see your reply yesterday till late last night.

Glad to hear you are on the mend. Hope all continues in that manner and recover asap.

  22. I expect Salzburg to finish top of our group and Rosenborg to be bottom. Qualification for us is likely to depend on our upcoming head to head against Leipzig. I’d therefore hope that we treat this as an old fashioned 2-legged cup tie – keep it as tight as possible and ‘win’ the tie back at Celtic Park. So a narrow defeat with us scoring wouldn’t be the worst result tonight.

With regard to the leaked team I’m assuming that the suggestion here is that Lustig an Sinclair are dropped rather than being out injured? Whilst neither of them have played to any outstanding level this season, they do still tend to feature when the European games come around.

  23. Glasstwothirdsfull

I made comment as soon as the draw was made, that they couldn’t of got any luckier.

Villareal were 17th in La Liga when Sevco played them. Missed sitters galore in that first half. Sevco should of been dead and buried.

Rapid Vienna, and average side going through turmoil.

Spartak Moscow, over achieved by finishing 4th last season. Now also in turmoil. But haven’t been strong or anywhere near it for years.

So how does a pot 4 team land an easier group than a pot 2 team….. Easy.. jammy as fck.

When we landed R.B Leipzig we drew the strongest of all the pot 3 sides. Our group became very difficult.
