Being as celebrated as the Lions have been for the last 54 years must take its toll, but with Bertie Auld, it never showed. If you have only met one Lisbon Lion, it most probably was Bertie. The news, released by his family yesterday, that he is the latest Lion to suffer dementia, will be distressing to all who cherish him. This is not the time to share our fondest memories of him, but I know we all send him our best wishes.
I have enjoyed watching much of the Euros. The element of surprise and the hope of discovering an emerging force. Watching how weaker teams, like Sweden, successfully earn a point against feted opponents. Watching talents such as Ronaldo prance like a prized stallion; it’s sheer theatre. The best part: for me, it is stress free. I can watch the sport as entertainment.
It is different, of course, when you have skin in the game. I have watched great and not-so-great Celtic teams all my life and I often find myself less than entertained by Celtic teams at both ends of the ability spectrum. Celtic is a mood-altering phenomenon. The joy from wins can be merely satisfactory as the result was expected, or it can lift spirits beyond anything else I know. Defeats, well, you know about them.
The problem here is that I have no choice in the matter. For me, Celtic is an addictive mood-altering phenomenon, I would not have it any other way, of course. Fortunately, there is more sunshine than shadow.
I want Scotland to win tonight and it would be great for Ryan Christie to score a cracker (eye on the LSD, if I can confuse the metaphor). But this is Scotland, the pain-joy balance is not the same as with Celtic. My expectation is they will lose, there will be trauma and we will probably hear about it for the next quarter of a century.
Watching Scotland is also a mood-altering phenomenon. For me, though, it is not addictive. I can take or leave it; build a shield of indifference against inevitable disappointment. I might see if there’s a film on tonight, leave the intoxicant for others. Enjoy your night.

I fear for the club game in Scotland primarily because the shenanigans in/at Holyrood, Hampden & the Glasgow Green fan-zone – add in the Wembley travel, and I can see the no crowds rule being implemented until at least the end of the year in Scotland. The SNPcult in Holyrood will again cite “data-driven analysis’ , which of course was dropped like a ‘ton of hot bricks’ in anticipation of a flag-waving “wha’s like us” indy bonanza in the post code showing the largest exponential growth of the Indian variant.
If tonights game had been at Hampden, not, Wembley, a great campaign would have been raised to “keep the English from crossing the border” without a ‘cheep’ from the Scottish media who are sychophantly portraying the London invasion as a “love in”. Let’s wait & see!!!

Celtic are indeed mood-changers. In recent years the usual new season anticipation has regularly been dampened by an early exit from the CL qualifiers. The prospect of 10iar diluted that over the last 2/3 seasons, however next season’s mood will be the acid-test, especially with the Ibrox franchise being strong domestic favourites and a reasonable fancy for CL group qualification at its first attempt.
Regarding “Team Scotland”, to coin one of Salmond’s many 2014 facetious quips, all the historic scars that I and many other Tims have, caused by years of systematic rejection of our players and the vitriolic ‘Hampden Roar’ abuse of those who actually made it into squads, will never heal. I have no interest in the fortunes of the Scotland national team. When engaged in company by those among us who have miraculously/ suspiciously found new love of Scotland and all things tartan, I adopt an approach of courteous indifference….it is impossible to reason someone out of a position that they have not reasoned themselves into.
Sad feelings about Bertie – Bon chance to Ange….he’ll need it! HH.

Great to see you posting again Mick and thanks for update on big Ange , that’s a pity your local Celtic events were cancelled but good news that you and family are safe and well down under 👍😎🍺🍺💚🍀

So sad about the Celtic Down Under event, probably no one would have known
around the world these type of Celtic events happen here all the time, it just goes
to show what Celtic means to people worldwide.
Hope you and E can make another pilgramage to Melbourne soon, i’ll certainly
be there to meet you both.

Cheers Mick I really hope when things get back to some kind of normality that E and I can get back out to Melbourne sometime HH 😎☘

Glad to see you posting again, hope things are good with you?
Bhoys back at training today. Doesn’t look like LG involved. Rumours we haven’t taken up the option to extended by a year might be true. Wouldn’t be averse to that.
MELBOURNEMICK !
Good to see you in print again; knew you got scunnered at last season’s neg-fest, but the thought of St Ange of Straylier taking over, has clearly warmed your cockles (and jeez do we need it this weather eh, bud).
Obv I share your optimism Angelos will be as transformative at CP as he was up in Brizvegas and Yoko-Ono.
Take care doon la costiera!

As always watching the Sweden v Slovakia game with a view to who could do a job for Celtic. The Slovakian centre-back, Lubomir Satka looks a possibility. 25 years old, plays for Lech Poznan so probably “gettable”.
Hasn’t been properly challenged yet in a quiet game so reserve the right to change views after the second half, but looks aware and seems to adopt good positions when Sweden break forward. A lot of the back passes have gone to him so possibly Slovakia trust him as a ball player, he’s found a range of players with accurate passes across the pitch.
He’ll probably score a ridiculous own goal second half.
Who woke up the Kraken ?
One I do miss positing is Snake Pilsen, the updates from Slovakia were always interesting.

The Tartan Army are so a real army. That’s why they dress the way they do.
Also, Ulster Scots is a real language, so it is.

What`s with the `are so` and ` so it is ` comments? Are these common expressions in Ulster or are you referring to some Glaswegians` style of speaking ?

JHB is treated abominbaly on here. Could anyone of his detractors give examples of JHB comments which warrant such abuse?

Tin hat on here and apologies if any offence caused to our Irish friends.
In my experience “soitis” – one word not three – is a figure of speech used mainly by persons of Williamist extraction with a connection with the NE of Ireland.
Similarly such persons also use eg ‘soheis’, ‘sosheis’, ‘sotheydid’, “sotheydo”. It can be followed with ‘note’.
Followed with NOYE.

I am probably one of the most guilty, so I will explain. JHB said that 60% of Celtic supporters were stupid and sectarian (i.e. they only vote SNP out of a hatred for Rangers supporters). I found that not just simplistic, but very offensive. ? Anyway, I promise (probably won’t) to stop trolling him if he answers one simple question, ‘Should the North of Ireland be allowed to leave the Union?’ A simple YES or NO will suffice.

Thanks to you,too.
In the words of a dearly missed poster :-
Play nice.
Sky just shown that horrible game when the huns won the league at CP in May 1999. Mahe and Riseth sent off for us, Wallace for them. Dallas bleeding from the coin thrown and when play started back, gives them a penalty straight away.
I was there and rarely felt so angry as I did that day.

We were in the corner of the Jock Stein Stand, quite close to where the Rangers corner kick was taken that led Hugh Dallas to give a penalty. I honestly believe he gave the penalty as much out of anger at having been hit by the pound coin (can understand it a bit) as there being a foul. Also have vague memories of a guy running on to the pitch and being rugby tackled and his mobile phone fell onto the running track. I think a guy fell from the upper tier (?). Yes, it was an awful day and the atmosphere in the stadium was poisonous. TBH I think the support let themselves down big time as did Mahe.
