Non-addictive mood-altering phenomenon

Being as celebrated as the Lions have been for the last 54 years must take its toll, but with Bertie Auld, it never showed.  If you have only met one Lisbon Lion, it most probably was Bertie.  The news, released by his family yesterday, that he is the latest Lion to suffer dementia, will be distressing to all who cherish him.  This is not the time to share our fondest memories of him, but I know we all send him our best wishes.

I have enjoyed watching much of the Euros.  The element of surprise and the hope of discovering an emerging force.  Watching how weaker teams, like Sweden, successfully earn a point against feted opponents.  Watching talents such as Ronaldo prance like a prized stallion; it’s sheer theatre.  The best part: for me, it is stress free.  I can watch the sport as entertainment.

It is different, of course, when you have skin in the game.  I have watched great and not-so-great Celtic teams all my life and I often find myself less than entertained by Celtic teams at both ends of the ability spectrum.  Celtic is a mood-altering phenomenon.  The joy from wins can be merely satisfactory as the result was expected, or it can lift spirits beyond anything else I know.  Defeats, well, you know about them.

The problem here is that I have no choice in the matter.  For me, Celtic is an addictive mood-altering phenomenon, I would not have it any other way, of course.  Fortunately, there is more sunshine than shadow.

I want Scotland to win tonight and it would be great for Ryan Christie to score a cracker (eye on the LSD, if I can confuse the metaphor).  But this is Scotland, the pain-joy balance is not the same as with Celtic.  My expectation is they will lose, there will be trauma and we will probably hear about it for the next quarter of a century.

Watching Scotland is also a mood-altering phenomenon.  For me, though, it is not addictive.  I can take or leave it; build a shield of indifference against inevitable disappointment.  I might see if there’s a film on tonight, leave the intoxicant for others.  Enjoy your night.

  1. 31003,

KT was my MOTM, his first half performance was most excellent.

Massive respect to Che as he dug mega deep and worked his nuts off and unsettled the England defence for EVERY minute he was on the pitch. Cracking performance.

  2. Park the bus,

It’s quite easy really, type how you feel , how you really feel, get that angst out, express yourself, and then wait…., get a glass of water, a cup of tea(no alcohol mind you) and the read back what you have penned, and then delete it. Simples

  3. And another thing – if we had gone for Steve Clarke as manager when Rodgers left we would have won 10 in a row.

  4. PETEC

To be honest I forgot how good Kieran was….probably because he plays the way I expect him to. In fairness, the whole team played well. Well done to them all

  5. 31003,

    I agree.

Croatia are Favourites but they are well beatable.

One things certain…….. there is a worse Stadium than Hamdump Now and its at the Edge – No Care for the Supporters…… Just Buy. aye. Baku Stadium is Ridiculous. COVID wullnae go far there!!!

    Martin Tyler raved about CalMac.

He has Been Incredible for Celtic in the 4×3… totally awesome.

I hope our new Boss gives him proper Time off when He has Won the Euros. :))

  7. I hate loans but getting Gilmour on a years loan would be brilliant…. He will be a real top players

O’Donnell, Marshall, Hanley, Dykes, Feaser are all good playeris

  8. clunks,

Yo dude – you cannae ask for much mair, Scotland had a game plan and I think SC executed it well.

I expect Jamesie to start on Tuesday. Croatia are Technically excellent but they are gonnae tire quickly, unless they utilise their Squad…. likewise us.

I just fear the fact we lost by 2 goals first game that even getting 4 points won’t be enough.

  9. The new Celtic, A club. Like no other, well actually there is. Quite a lot as it happens, feeder clubs a bit pissed my clubs one, doesn’t seem to bother the tache, why would it, he’s no mr no jangles

    James forrest was invisible

How very dare you, I think we can all agree that his cloak of invincibilty is always on lol ;-))

Mount & Foden being bullied out of everything – should be subbed at half-time.

Scotland playing as well as they can. England lost the midfield in first-half….too lightweight. Southgate’s got it badly wrong – Henderson & Rashford on, Foden & Mount off.

Why would a supposed Celtic follower post on a Celtic site the above comment which – to my mind – would suggest a leaning towards a desire towards an England win??

he meant this as satire and we’re too stupid to appreciate it.

This obsession with JHB is unhealthy….let Ernie spout his/her nonsense ;-))

Far too much lately of tackling the man/woman rather than their nonsense ;-))

  16. Tom McLaughlin on

English presenter on LBC Radio talking about Scottish football fans and their enthusiasm for the game. Raised the question as to why Scottish football fans are well behaved abroad, and asked why English supporters are usually intent on causing havoc.

He went on to talk at length about his experience of Celtic supporters in Seville and how fantastic and sporting they were even in defeat.

    Good to hear.

  17. Well played SCOTLAND…..The Scots DID PROVE ME WRONG after all…And I am happy to admit it !

Clarkes tactics and Team/Sub selections worked very well….FAIR Play to the Manager.

Southgate is Ugly, Baldy Boring Chump.

He has had a personality BY PASS, PLUS his squad has too many Prima Donnas…Jack WHO ?

  18. How much of a special player is Keiran? Surprisingly when Big Armstrong came on I thought was tremendous ……..How we’ve missed genuine quality in our ranks. Wee Sparky should be beelin’ at misssing out on this.

I hope he takes it as motivation.

  19. …..oh and good to see Mick on again – a cameo appearance perhaps, but good all the same.

    Stralyan CSC

  20. It’s unlikely that Scotland will progress, however the ideal scenario is England lose 2-0 and Scotland win 2-0. I think that would see them both on 4 points, with Scotland’s goal difference being +1 and England being 0. If goal difference is how it is settled, then Scotland would be 2nd and through. England would be 3rd and probably out. Going through as a 3rd place team is going to be very tight.

Great to see Ange is out of quarantine and was at the game with Dom.

  21. Good morning from an overcast North Wales.

Really good performance from the whole team last night. KT was outstanding.

The bonus for me, living in England, is I won’t get the usual ribbing especially from my sons. 😃

The Tory CULT Chump would have been hoping that his beloved Engurland would win…Hes just NOT MAN enough to admit it !

The Scots gave Boris’s Brexit Eleven plenty to worry about, with Tierney my Man of the Match…although I thought ALL the Scots lads played well, and showed up Thatchers Mob for what they….VERY AVERAGE.

They were on home turf with the majority of support inside the stadium, but it was The Scots who showed real fight and determination.

    Jack WHO ?….Harry WHO ?
