Non-addictive mood-altering phenomenon

579

Being as celebrated as the Lions have been for the last 54 years must take its toll, but with Bertie Auld, it never showed.  If you have only met one Lisbon Lion, it most probably was Bertie.  The news, released by his family yesterday, that he is the latest Lion to suffer dementia, will be distressing to all who cherish him.  This is not the time to share our fondest memories of him, but I know we all send him our best wishes.

I have enjoyed watching much of the Euros.  The element of surprise and the hope of discovering an emerging force.  Watching how weaker teams, like Sweden, successfully earn a point against feted opponents.  Watching talents such as Ronaldo prance like a prized stallion; it’s sheer theatre.  The best part: for me, it is stress free.  I can watch the sport as entertainment.

It is different, of course, when you have skin in the game.  I have watched great and not-so-great Celtic teams all my life and I often find myself less than entertained by Celtic teams at both ends of the ability spectrum.  Celtic is a mood-altering phenomenon.  The joy from wins can be merely satisfactory as the result was expected, or it can lift spirits beyond anything else I know.  Defeats, well, you know about them.

The problem here is that I have no choice in the matter.  For me, Celtic is an addictive mood-altering phenomenon, I would not have it any other way, of course.  Fortunately, there is more sunshine than shadow.

I want Scotland to win tonight and it would be great for Ryan Christie to score a cracker (eye on the LSD, if I can confuse the metaphor).  But this is Scotland, the pain-joy balance is not the same as with Celtic.  My expectation is they will lose, there will be trauma and we will probably hear about it for the next quarter of a century.

Watching Scotland is also a mood-altering phenomenon.  For me, though, it is not addictive.  I can take or leave it; build a shield of indifference against inevitable disappointment.  I might see if there’s a film on tonight, leave the intoxicant for others.  Enjoy your night.

NO Worries mate, I am a bit unwell again anyway and I am certainly NOT ” Fit” enough to go out anywhere just now.

I had a few Beers on Tuesday in my local pub….but Ive struggled since, as I had hoped to get out for some Pre match Beers yesterday…but it was impossible due to feeling unwell.

I will stay at home Today watching the Racing and Fitba, and then see IF I feel any better on Sunday, and MAYBE manage a few Beers in my local ?

I hope that you and the Bhoys had a great Friday night.

    HH Mate.

  4. Hands up i was not happy with idea of kid with little more that 700 minutes of professional football playing yesterday but gilmour played very well. To be fair the whole team were very good not one player underprofermed and as a team no english player was allowed to settle, have easy possession, lots of closing down quickly in an organised way.

Hunourable shout out to Dykes who won a hell of a lot in the air and hurried and harassed their back line, mings and stones will know their were in a game today, like jullian they must we weak, should never play for england ( CQN style). Adam’s also played well.

  6. Good morning cqn from a mild sunny Garngad

Big Jimmy – Hope you feel better today. How is wee Rocky bhoy?

It was a good night in the pub but social distancing isn’t being kind to the hospitality trade, not allowed to shout/cheer at telly when the footy or racing is on😂 needless to say that never happened😂🍺, not aloud to socialise with other patrons, tables closed off, capacity way down.

Anyway you keep well big man and I look forward to the 16th.

    D :)

  7. Oh and by the way I though Scotland done well last night but maybe we could have used more subs.

    D :)

  8. Surprisingly impressed with Scotland last night.

Like many, I feared the worst.

A real workman like performance. That said, we have some genuinely class individual players.

    Yes, I’ll take that thanks

  9. Earnest Lynch – you, as usual, avoid answering the original question and resort to petty insult. You claim I have a sense of grievance because I am a cult member? Strange as I was born in England and now live in the North of Ireland and have no connection with Scotland bar a love of Celtic.

Top Tip: Always remember your own Top Tip i.e. don’t construct an argument on fantasy or wishful thinking.

I actually enjoyed the game and Scotland would have won if they had a decent goalscorer. Dearie me Griff it should have been your big moment :–(

  10. !!Bada Bing!! on

I hope some of the guys on here, who want rid of McGregor, were watching last night, he was brilliant.

Some Bertie Auld t shirts doing the rounds, saying all money going to Alzheimers charities, it’s a scam, don’t buy them…….scum

  12. Great performance from Scotland.

KT was immense, although there were no failures.

Thought Armstrong was great when he came on also.

I would have liked to have seen us pressure their keeper more. Who I don’t rate.

As for England. A lot of talented players , but not a team. A bit like us last season.

Are you going to get round to explaining how I ‘mocked the referendum’ by pointing out, in reply to a question, that the atmosphere on this site changed as a result of it?

    ……….

Wee Rocky Bhoy seems okay as he still get his two Insulin Jabs each day…Maybe I should try some LOL ?

Thanks for asking about him….The Wee Bassa !

I had Blood tests on Tuesday, and apparently my Kidneys are giving the Doctor a wee bit of concern.

My Blood Count appears reasonable for now, but I will be having Blood Tests every 2/3 weeks for now.

I WILL be there on the 16th July !

    HH Mate.

  15. Well done Scotland, a great team performance.

Beginning to wonder whether we should keep Eddie until his contract runs out.

We know that there is a hefty sell on fee and he will have to try to play

well to get a good move. Then would we be able to sign a player of

his quality to replace him? Automatic CL qualifying is a big carrot.

    Just a thought.

    ………………….

Unlike me to defend you on here Ernie but fair’s fair. I can well remember CQN on the build up to the Referendum in 2014. That’s the first time I can remember seeing political posts appearing on the blog. CQN was definitely targeted and the main culprit was a character called Billy Bhoy who appeared at that time and disappeared soon afterwards. I challenged each and every one of his posts for a time on the basis that CQN was a football blog but eventually my indefatigability waned and I gave up. It was boring as hell and the atmosphere on the site became more argumentative and divisive as a result.

    No problem.

Did your remark suggest that you thought there should not have been a referendum, it was not only unnecessary, but a bad idea? If so, would you say the same thing about a referendum in the North of Ireland? Is it not all one big happy union?

If I am wrong, then I apologize completely. Maybe I am mixing you up with JHB. :–)

  18. Didn’t watch gemme last night (I expected Scotland to get hammered). I gather the team played well. Good to hear. Someone was saying that they understood that Billy Gilmour was a Tim. I don’t think so but it shouldn’t matter. I gather he played as a boy for a team run by 2 kaffliks……As someone said, it would be great if we could have him on loan for a year.

I have sadly contributed to that lately, and I agree that this should be mainly a discussion forum about all things Celtic. Sadly, politics does overlap, and I think to pinpoint the referendum as some kind of sea change event is a bit of an exaggeration. There have long been discussions over Poppy Day silences, the Flying of Palestinian flags, minute silences for members of the Royal family, the singing of certain songs deemed to be Republican or sectarian and so on and so on.

But, I take your point and apologize to you and the blog in general. I originally did look to this site for quick news about Celtic, and I will occasionally do so again from not on. I promise not to engage my fellow Celts EL and JHB. The other stuff we can discuss with our mates.

  21. Markiebhoy at 1045, I’m trying to spot the flaw in that because it seems like a pretty creative idea.

Re Scotland last night, I’m worried about bids for CalMac now as he was brilliant.

  22. It really was a good team performance last night but I thought Tierney was a cut above the others .

    Re Gilmour.

Nevin`s “He`ll be in every Scotland team for the next ten years” was way over the top but young Billy really does look a player.

Most of all, I actually enjoyed the game….not often I say that about Scotland ( or England) matches.

Please don’t take my endorsement of Earnie’s stance as having a go at you. Not at all. I would say though that the issues which you highlight as having always been discussed on the blog don’t really involve party politics. Today the discussion is SNP (aka The Cult) v Tories/Unionists (aka Barstewards)

Hello again all you young rebels.

Didn’t realise so many quality posters read my little input on this

    dear green place.

Made me realise, as one said ” life’s too short ” and he’s correct why rob

myself of communication with great Celtic men and women ( where’s Dena ?)

because of some rather infantile attention seekers? who seem to be taking

a break at the moment, no doubt sharpening their pencils to pierce big Ange

    with his first team selection.

Melbourne back up and running again after another 3 week lockdown, only

a few cases of the Delta variant, but no messing, the whole place shut down

    again.

Told you all about our Celtic Down Under fest which was cancelled last week.

Was just thinking to myself, is there any other club in the world who’s fans

could, would, or should organise a 3 day weekend event, which was fully booked

out, with boat trips, golf day, soccer tourney, ex players booked on flights to

speak, Willie Wallace, Scott McDonald etc. and on and on.

    Nope not a one.

Anyhows back to my young team tomorrow they may be a bit rusty, but as soon

as they arrive at our park tomorrow I’ll be giving it the big Ange, shape up or ship

    out lol.

Might as well come back on Corkcelt, the negs are on holiday 8-)))))

Still can’t find a handsome hurting honest hun here in Oz.
