Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

been one of the biggest defenders of the GB on here and other forums, but you cant defend the undefendable, dig out the banger(pun intended) and hand him over, we have a few fines hanging over us, could be a big one this time….really stupid…

and before anyone say’s why the GB? it clearly came from that section, and the fact up until the 1st one went off they were being stewarding with very few stewards afterwards there were dozens.

  3. I too agree with notthebus and masty. If there are any Green Brigade members lurking, we love ye lhads but the fireworks have to stop. Ye don’t need them to create atmosphere, ye are costing the Club ye love valuable resources. Get the message across to the few who are bringing them in, STOP IT NOW.

“hitting the turf” by David Ashforth

Ashforth’s appreciation for pathos comes through in an interview with Peter Poston, some years after Poston had quit training. He “had a theory about breeding. If you went back far enough (about 300 years), every racehorse traced back to the Godolphin Arabian or the Byerly Turk or the Darley Arabian. That meant they all had the same breeding, more or less. What was the point of paying a lot of money for a racehorse when you could get virtually the same horse for almost nothing?”

This being Ashforth’s world, the theory turns out to be excellent but Poston ends up “in a tiny caravan in somebody’s front garden” just the same. Having bought Athene for 140 guineas as a yearling, Poston then fails to win a race with her and gives her away as a prize in a £1 raffle. “It was a very generous gesture,” Ashforth records, because Athene would later give birth to Rheingold, winner of the 1973 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

I can’t imagine such a report about us appearing in a Scottish newspaper, whatever the circumstances.

As I’ve said before, we would get a fairer crack of the whip in England than in Scotland.

Since NL confirmed a £7m bid in January i think Paul means they returned this summer with a £2m bid and thankfully QPR have forced their hand. There are very few people on this planet who would turn down a move from SPL to EPL and more than double your wages. I wish him all the best. We simply have to hang on to the buy low / sell high policy until any regionalisation of European football presents an opportunity.

Hope we are looking for better than Doyle. Money should be there for a youngish £5m striker but wages are obviously key. So Remy on a reported £100k a week. Cisse £50k or £60k. Neither will happen and they won’t be short of better offers than Scotland. Champions league isn’t guaranteed

  9. Why does anyone think that the GB will pay any attention to what anyone says?

    They haven’t before.

They think they have a right to do whatever they want and when pulled up, they play the victim card.

The ” they are only lads line” doesn’t work.

Stupid impressionable young people ate being manipulated by politically motivated old fashioned guys, who don’t have a viable platform in society to advance their agenda.

They latched on to the gullible within our support, with the hook that they provide great craic and atmosphere at the games.

What will it take for some of you guys to realise that you are being played like a fiddle?

The Celtic support arebigger and better than that and shoud not be used as a politacal platform by any grouping, right, left or centre.

It appears to me that the GB’s agenda is to embarrass and damage the club’s standing the length and breadth of the Continent.

No more p**h about a certain Wolves player being better than Anto Stokes.

in 107 games for Celtic Anto has scored 47 goals – work out the maths. If someone started a rumour that we we looking to sign a striker with a similar goal to game ratio for 3 million we’d be be happy Bhoys.

    —————————–

    Well said.

We’ve already signed one striker (Balde) and we are losing one striker (Hooper).

Initial reports on Balde aren’t setting anyone alight, but he needs time. Hooper actually one of the rare Celtic signings that was able to settle in right away.

Between Stokes, Samaras, Watt, Commons, Balde we’ve got players who can do the job.

No we have not. They can score goals but are not prolific scorers. We need a striker who is razor sharp at his trade.Nothing else will suffice. If we fail to qualify through penny pinching then we dont deserve to be at the big boys table.

When we had no money,I would go along with our system, but not now.If Hooper goes we will have taken in £23.5 million in fees for 3 players.Surely to god we can splash out decent money on a goalscorer.

    The proof of the pudding; another wee tale from Ashforths book;

In Hitting The Turf, he discusses the ancient racing adage about “the outsider of three”, according to which a surprisingly large number of three-runner races are won by the least fancied horse.

Detailed analysis is in pretty short supply in horse racing but Ashforth had the bad manners to actually count the number of times the system came good during the 1991 Flat season. From 75 races, the outsider won just three, with a longest winning SP of 9-2.

“Followers of the system spent 1991 handing over £1 coins while the man on the other side of the counter kept handing back 19p. What a system,” he wrote.

“What punters should be shouting is, ‘Outsider of three stuffed again. Did you have that favourite?'”

You’ve got to love a journalist who tells us what’s happening instead of relying on hoary old fables. The Post is much better than it used to be at keeping records and facts, and its hot/cold trainers lists are fascinating, underused resources. One day, I hope, they’ll start telling us how often each jump jockey gets unseated and how often their mounts fall.

It would at least have the effect of stopping punters from guessing who would be most embarrassed by such statistics. Surely, Ashforth the exploder of myths would approve.

You know what, I was never a huge Kevin Doyle fan, looking at his stats, he’s a 1goal in 3 games striker at best. I know he’d be likely to up that ratio in the SPL and I know he has 50+ international caps, but I don’t think he’s the out n out scorer to replace hooper.

    But while I’m on the subject of someone outside our current signing policy;

Just because we have the ‘signing young players for low prices to play for a couple of years then make a tidy profit’ policy doesn’t mean EVERY player must fit this profile, or does it?

Surely if a player with experience can be bought cheaply with wages that fall within our range he could be bought?
