Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

Quite happy if we get doyle. IMO it is unfair to look at goal record of a man who has played with EPL strugglers.

  3. Right wing Celtic supporters should form a supporters group. They could meet in one of the cubicals at Celtic park where their libertarian desires ti smoke where they like would be indulged under cover of the rest of the eejits who smoke in the bogs.

They could have banners of thatcher and Regan, pinochet etc. But mostly they could drown out the green brigade by tutting loudly when they do something they don’t like.

  6. Off topic Re Premier Sports, has anyone else had this problem?

I subscribed to Premier Sports last year on a Celtic deal for one of the CL qualifiers, it cost £10 for a year which was good value.

A couple of days ago I noticed that my credit card had been charged £95 for subscription renewal, not a happy Hector. Phoned them up and told them I wanted to cancel, so they refunded £55 and will only pay £40 for the year with no renewal next year. Got to watch these people, bloody chancers, hope some of the qualifiers are on this channel.

  17. Getting drunk, singing in the street, even urinating in a public place……all things that daft people do….without leaving home with a plan to do them. Drink can do that.

But leaving home with a flare, smoke bomb, firework? Concealing it and bringing it into a stadium? Nothing ‘daft’, or getting ‘carried away’ about that.

These folk must know what they are doing. They do it often enough.

And self policing doesn’t seem to be working. For every smoke bomb let off, there has to be a dozen folk who knew who did it and what they are about.

  26. masty is neil lennon on

THE Directors and Board of Celtic Football Club are responsible for the safety of all supporters, and this is their primary objective.

For some time the Club has been under close scrutiny by the Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group with regard to serious safety concerns within Section 111. The Safety Advisory Group is responsible for recommending the annual renewal of the General Safety Certificate which determines the safe spectator capacity of Celtic Park and allows the stadium to operate.

The Safety Advisory Group’s primary concerns, which are shared by the Club include:

    • Overcrowding of Section 111 resulting in unsafe congestion.

    • The refusal of spectators to comply with the direction of safety stewards.

    • The unsafe lateral movement of spectators blocking aisles.

    • ´Moshing´ – mock fighting/jostling – causing crowd disruption and damage to seating (131 damaged at Tuesday’s night’s match).

    • The ´body surfing´ of young people over the heads of spectators.

Regrettably, all of the above concerns were evident at Tuesday night’s fixture against Cliftonville FC. In addition, three fireworks were exploded within Section 111, causing the Match Referee to require a stadium announcement to be made instructing such behaviour to stop. As a result of this unprecedented step by a match official, Celtic FC will now be the subject of a disciplinary action for contravention of the UEFA Safety and Security Regulations.

Following the events of last Tuesday’s match, the Club’s position was to close Section 111, but following discussions between the Club’s Supporters’ Liaison Officer and representatives of the ‘Green Brigade’ that decision has been reviewed and the section will remain open. However, the situation will be monitored at both the Celtic FC v Borussia Monchengladbach match on Saturday 27th July, and the Celtic FC v IF Elfsborg match on Wednesday, July 31.

The Club is keen to work with spectators in Section 111 to resolve safety concerns. However, it should be understood that failure to stop this unsafe behaviour will require the closure of this area in Celtic Park.

The Club recognises the many examples of good support for the team emanating from this part of the ground and in particular the efforts of the ‘Green Brigade’ in organising positive displays which are commended. However, the unsafe aspects of spectator behaviour in Section 111 require to be addressed with immediate effect.

  27. traditionalist88 on

    masty is neil lennon

No I’m not in 111 but I know 2 folk who are, and they don’t bring fireworks to football matches!

They are being tarred with this brush though, you can’t blame a whole section of people for the actions of, what may be, one halfwit sneaking in bangers or whatever.

To use the actions of Italian ultras turning up to their own teams training to harass their own players, to point score against the Green Brigade, is frankly laughable…but thomthetim seems to think it is a legit argument against the group. Just saying we should keep this sensible and not go off at a tangent like that, I have already said I agree witht he club statement. Some on here are using it to further their own agenda…Kojo being one, surprisingly enough.

Incidentally, there were always bangers when deadco visited Parkhead emanating from the away section, but Glasgow City Council cleary deemed them to be of the safe variety?
