Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

  1. Incidentally Robert, the left wing club would quickly erase Brother Walfrid from the history books. GB politics ain’t compatible with Celtic’s stance. Time for GBbto settle down or they will be refused entry.

  2. For what it’s worth I condemn the clowns who throw fireworks inside football stadia just as I confront them on the streets of the town where I live if I see them. Idiotic behaviour among young people (and not so young people) needs to be challenged. We often fail badly as a society on that score. There are not too many others where I live who will confront the idiots who throw fireworks around the streets at halloween time. They are afraid. Sometimes with good reason. But fear shouldn’t stop people doing the right thing.

If you are near one of these idiots then challenge them. If it is indeed Green Brigade then someone in that group with influence needs to have a word with the perpetrators.

  3. The writing was on the wall when the ludicrous statement about smashing the marxist green brigade was leaked to the press. Fireworks in a crowded stadium don’t go. People have been injured and even a Welsh rugby fan killed by people taking other people’s saftey into their own hands. But some people just know better and will not be telt.

The green brigade have added something special in recent years but its clear the polis were just biding their time and waiting for their moment.

I await, with interest, the leaked police statement on other teams’ fans and how they shall also be crushed.

  4. The jokers at UEFA will probably fine us more than they would for racist banners.

  5. I love the atmosphere the Green Brigade bring to Celtic Park, without them we know how quiet the stadium is! Some of their banners and displays have been brilliant!

But it is time for them to start self policing – the smoke bombs, the bangers, not on and no need! They make enough noise!

The broken seats and the looming fine they have taken it too far, it is time they get back to doing what they do best create an atmosphere but do it within the rules!

    We are all Celtic supporters

don’t like saying or indeed suggesting it mate, but it’s time to give these cretins a dull yin with the threat of pointing them out should they do it again.

  7. John O Neil…..

Not sure I’d want us to ‘ban’ the GB. I am sure there are many good folk there.

However, if the GB care about their reputation, then it would be useful for them to issue a statement condemning this behaviour and committing to help the Club deal with the problem.

As for individuals. Anyone caught in possession of one of these pyros, inside or near the stadium….life ban.

I’d also go as far as to close the row in which they sit, offering to relocate the innocents affected.

  8. traditionalist88 on

The Celtic statement does not make any reference to offensive singing, why are certain people on here feeling the need to add this to the mix? What is their agenda?

  9. Bhoys and Ghrils,

I acknowledge the support, atmosphere and colour the GB bring to each game and have praised the unstinting backing they give to the team with their displays etc. However for a time I have been a wee bit apprehensive about their political agenda as well as some of the behaviour.

This political agenda is not fabricated by those with an axe to grind, but as previous posters have pointed out is from their own website. This is contrary to Celtic’s position which is non political and non sectarian.( I am not saying that the GB are sectarian just underlining Celtic’s position ).

Now that UEFA have entered the fray, I think the statement issued by Celtic is both sensible and fair. Safety is seemingly being compromised both at home and away. I would agree with Obonfanti 1888 @ 13.20 that this seems like a final warning.

Talk about scoring own goals. Events such as pitch invasions, fireworks etc could set us back years and have outsiders thinking we are on a par with Sevco. I hope I am not sounding like Hugh Keevans, but how can we condemn when the kettle acts like the pot.

Let’s not over- exaggerate, but the Cuckoo attitude has to stop. Incidentally agree with ernie lynch @14.48 about a very fair assessment of the Celtic support at Brentford given by Sally Benader Chief Inspector of Operations for Hounslow.

That statement about their fans always having bangers when they visited simply isn’t true. Certianly not in the last 15 years at any rate, and I haven’t missed a derby game in that time.

Up until the last 2-3 seasons I’d have said fireworks/smokebombs etc at any game in Scotland was a pretty rare event.

  12. Kojo,

Reading back a wee bit “By their fruits you will know them” as you may well be aware it was said by Jesus in his sermon on the mount at Matt 7. 16.

Prior to this He talks of wolves in sheep’s clothing masquerading as false prophets and it warns against mixing with such people as in summary it only takes one or two bad trees to spoil the whole orchard.

Celtics reputation abroad has not been created overnight it is a long continuous process, and is still on going.

All that hard work may go for nothing if some among us are determined to supply our foes with the ammunition they require to devour us.

The Elfsborg game is fast approaching and it seems like we will be going with the team from tuesday and maybe Ledley. Not sure about this as the gaping hole is back in front of very deep lying central defence. We will be up against a very nasty team who will push the ref to the limit so i hope we are ready for this.

I love the atmosphere the GB generates. Their displays are outstanding and without them Celtic Park would be like a library on SPL matchdays.

But how many times can UEFA and Celtic warn/fine them?

The statement Celtic produced today is a strong one. It reads to me as one more incident and that’s it.

Fireworks, flares etc are not allowed in the stadium. Health and safety in an all seater stadium deems crowd surfing inappropriate. It’s quite simple!

Big Phil hit the nail on the head in his article today, yet he’s getting a fair bit of stick back from Celtic fans.

As for pitch invasions after a friendly in England. Yeh that’s gonna make the English want us to join the big league.

  17. Jon O’Neil – I’m not getting in to specifics about your post. It’s fairly obvious that your understanding of ‘the left’ is of what I call the ‘Daily Mail’ variety.

I know. I think you were speculating that this might happen. I agree with your take on this.

I have the impression that Celtic have been down this road too often with UEFA in the last few years. Celtic know that our last warning might have been the previous one.

    Greetings.

Still more than confident that we will qualify for the group stages.

The team has built upon some great performances from a tough Europa League group two years ago. They have learned a lot from last year’s magnificent European campaign, where they punched well above their weight, and the vital experience that the players have gained will stand them in good stead for the next set of fixtures.

Progress. We have progressed, and i see no reason why, with the added experience gained that we will not continue with the positive progression.

Yes,the club has lost a few excellent footballers,Ki,Victor and Hoops etc. However,i honestly believe that we have the strength and talent in the squad to counter those loses.

Perhaps the main headache for Lenny is this – We have two of the finest right-backs in European football, when wee Matthews returns, how can the manager fit them both into the starting eleven? Play Lustig in central defense? Start Lustig at right back and play Adam right of midfield? It’s a tricky one.

Also, with regards to Kevin Doyle – There is one point some folk seem to forget…Doyle can actually play football, not that i am saying that we should sign him,but if we do…the old cliches,”first touch like a baby elephant,”couldn’t trap a bag of cement”certainly do not apply in this case, unlike some that we have signed in the not so distant past.

The pitch invasions have absolutely nothing to do with Celtic joining the English league.

Cardiff fans regularly invade the pitch at matches – is that going to stop them participating in the ‘big league’?

  23. Robert. It is fairly obvious that your understanding of the right comes from the reactionary Guardian. Both are fine newspapers.

  27. Wanyama and Hooper

I sincerely hope these guys to well. I think it’s important for Celtic as much as the players that they go to EPL clubs although I’d have liked them to be better – but the be-all and end-all for some players is to play in the English top flight and if we can show we can offer this, as much as we hate being a stepping stone, it will allow us to attract better players and make good money.

The problem with, particularly Hooper (as I believe Wanyama will be a success wherever he goes) is that playing for Norwich will probably no suit his game. If he goes down and isn’t a success then EPL teams lose confidence in buying from us. If he goes down and is a success then the money will roll in for others. If he was to go down and bang them in it might put to rest the “he can only score in the SPL” rubbish to an extent.

    Section 111

I love the Green Brigade but they do need to pull the reigns in and self-police better. It might be good natured banter but what happened the other week (although no harm was done) is an embarrassment to the club and damages our reputation and chances of getting in to league set-ups and encourages “old firm” stereotypes.

There were often small ‘explosions’ emanating from the away end when we played deadco at home, no flares but certainly small bangers or whatever they’re called.

    Right, time to ‘fess up.

Who’s done all three at the same time?

  30. Seats damaged, warnings about flares and bangers and all sorts……quite clear to me that what the GB bring to the party from an atmosphere perspective is far outweighed by their other shenanigans. Last year they banned themselves from two games(Arbroath and ICT), some statement that is – why not a far more high profile match or matches that would have shown they seriously meant business. I had the misfortune to sit in an area where they dropped one of their smoke bombs at the Cup Final, had my mates two girls crying for a full 10 mins and the lowlife that left it soon left the scene. The possibility that the atmosphere at CP might be funereal if they were out of section 111 is a price we may have to pay to keep our good name. High jinks is one thing but 131 seats is an absolute disgrace and no right thinking Celtic man can orcshould attempt to defend it.

  31. Tradition, I had a seat un the Lisbon lower for eight years. You are quite right. The huns got away with it for years. However I care about Celtic and not other clubs.
