Norway or Ireland again, or All-Ireland tie

175

If Celtic overcome Linfield, they will return to the north of Ireland or head to Norway in the next round.

Dundalk drew 1-1 with Rosenborg in the first leg in Ireland this week, so the Norwegians have a slender advantage, but the tie is by no means beyond the Irish. A return to Ireland in the next round would be a great reward for the many Celtic fans from that area who travel over to Scotland to see their team, but will be unable to attend tonight’s qualifier in Belfast.

Dundalk had a spectacular season in Europe last term, overcoming Champions League perennials BATE Borisov, before Legia Warsaw eliminated them from the premier tournament, opening up the opportunity for what proved to be a special season in the Europa League group stage.

Last season Rosenborg were eliminated from the Champions League third qualifying round by APOEL Nicosia.

From a travel perspective either destination is a good one for Celtic, although Brendan Rodgers would prefer to have the second tie at home.

Of course, fans of Linfield and Dundalk will be salivating at the prospect of an All-Ireland Champions League encounter.

PLANS have been lodged for a new entertainment venue at Ibrox.

Documents have been submitted with Glasgow City Council’s licensing board for a premises licence in former offices at Copland House, Edmiston Drive.

It would host wedding receptions, conferences, club meetings, live music and films, according to the licensing application.

The venue would be open from 11am to midnight every day of the week.

People have until August 3 to register any objections or representations on the plans with the council.

The applicant, listed as Copper Dog Ibrox Limited, wants to alter the existing office to create the facility.

  18. Remembering The Shameful Scenes When Linfield Played Dundalk In European Cup

Remembering The Shameful Scenes When Linfield Played Dundalk In European Cup

It’s 37 years since Oriel Park was smashed up by Linfield fans. So long ago that George Hamilton was still in the employ of BBC Northern Ireland. Not yet firmly clasped to the bosom of football followers down south.

More than any other IFA affiliated club, Linfield is synonymous with working class loyalism, while Dundalk was, among other things, something of a safe haven for northern nationalists who fled Belfast in the early 70s.

The Troubles were in an especially deadly phase. The first leg took place two days after the Warrenpoint ambush, when 18 British soldiers were killed by two roadside bombs.

The first game was fixed for Oriel Park. The two managers, Jim McLoughlin (Dundalk) and Roy Coyle (Linfield) protested that politics had no bearing on the encounter.

The Linfield supporters invaded Dundalk in great numbers.

In the hour or so before the match, the away supporters amused themselves by holding an impromptu tricolour burning festival. When the two captains strode into the centre-circle to perform the toss they were pelted with stones. A phalanx of charging Linfield supporters burst through a barrier and attacked the home fans.

One away fan clambered up on top the stand, shimmied up the flagpole, and tore down the tricolour, ripping it in half. An irate Dundalk supporter chased after him, followed by a policeman. Luckily, no one toppled off the Stand.

Thirty Linfield supporters were arrested. A similar number of fans and policemen were injured.

The match was drawn 1-1. Unsurprisingly, UEFA heaped most of the blame on Linfield supporters. As a punishment, they lost home advantage for the second leg.

The Dutch town of Haarlem was chosen as the venue for Linfield’s ‘home’ tie. FC Haarlem has a Welsh manager, Barry Hughes who had contacts in Ireland.

The match was played in Haarlem in front of a paltry crowd. Linfield were required to pay Dundalk’s expenses in making the trip.

Dundalk won 2-0 through two goals from former Irish international Cathal Muckian. George Hamilton interviewed the two managers side by side in the airport after the game.

Setanta Sports produced a sensational documentary of the tie a couple of years ago.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Linfield paid a heavy price for Oriel Park riots

    September 2 2009 2:36 PM

The bill for the clean-up after Linfield fans went on the rampage in Dundalk following their European Cup match at Oriel Park was starting to emerge in the first week of September, 1979.

So too were the stories of residents “night of terror’ in the Pearse Park area as Linfield fans clashed with a gang of local youths on the green outside the terraced homes.

Malicious damage claims for over £10,000 were lodged by residents, and Dundalk FC submitted a claim for £5,000 for damage caused within Oriel Park.

However, it was the sheer terror that residents, many elderly, experienced on the night that left a legacy that endured for quite some time. “People think that we are exaggerating the extent of the violence” said one Pearse Park resident who added “but it had to be seen to be believed. There were sixty buses parked in the Harp Lager park opposite our houses and when many of the fans arrived they were already drunk”.

He added “they were dancing on the roofs of the buses and the windows were already broken in most of the buses. They verbally abused residents and exposed themselves to local residents and used the most vulgar of language”.

Towards the end of the game about 25 local youths attacked the buses and a few petrol bombs were thrown at the buses in an attempt to burn them.

When the Linfield fans were escorted back to their buses and saw what was happening they attacked the local youths and there were running battles on the green in front of the Pearse Park homes, leaving residents terrified. UEFA, the European football body, clearly held Linfield responsible for the havoc that their fans created during the European Cup tie with Dundalk at Oriel Park on August, 29th, 1979.

A member of the Control and Disciplinary Committee was quoted afterwards as saying “we had to teach Linfield a lesson”.

And UEFA came down hard. Linfield were ordered to play the return leg with Dundalk at a neutral venue, outside of the British Isles (which thankfully for Dundalk ruled out Ibrox Park which would have been Linfield’s preference). The Belfast club had also to pay for the damages to Oriel Park caused by their fans, and they were ordered to pay Dundalk’s additional costs of the away match.

Dundalk, on the other hand, got off lightly with a 3,000 Swiss Franc (£870) fine.

But…i do think McGregor has a chance, he really is a hard bhoy. If he jumps right on top of Floyd from the off, it might get interesting.

We just need to get in,get a result (win to nil),and get out. This tie’s a nuisance, nothing more, because of the noise and hoopla surrounding it so the sooner it’s dealt with the better.

UEFA should’ve moved it to a neutral ground but we know better than to rely on those in power for guidance.

    Pump them Celtic.
