It is surely no coincidence that Norwich City accepted Celtic’s offer for Adam Idah, reportedly £8.5m up front with another £1m dependent on results and a 15% sell-on fee, within hours of the club being sold to an American investment group.
On accepting the deal for Idah, City added £8.5m to their balance sheet – approximately 12% of the club’s net book value. It was a deal outgoing major shareholder Delia Smith was clearly motivated to accept before City’s new investors arrived.
That deal is still significant. It will inevitably reach £9.5m, which, in time, will make Adam our most expensive signing ever. It is also less than the asking price Celtic were faced with until this week; the sell-on percentage is also less than it was.
Adam reminds me of Mark Viduka. Strong and skilful on the ball, he can control a long ball and bring others into play. Without Adam coming in on loan in January, I don’t think we would have got over the line in so many crucial games in the run-in. The league would have gone elsewhere, and who can forget his contribution in the Cup Final?
There is still a medical to complete before the deal gets over the line. Lots happened elsewhere yesterday. We’ll touch on Bosun Lawal, Bojan Miovski and others later in the week.

Abada only dropped out of the starting 11 due to extenuating circumstances, ie the war in Gaza. Before that he was a first-team regular.
Nothing new there, it’s all been detailed, he was out of more squads ,than in them, and was a squad player, which wasn’t going to change anytime soon, moving on suited both parties.
Finally we have a breakthrough! Price possibly a bit toppy, but he has proven he can do the business for us so you don’t mind paying a bit of a premium for that certainty. And at least nowhere near the “reported” £12m!
Now pretty much back to where we were at the end of last season, which was behind where we were at the end of 22-23 (and that clearly needed strengthening).
Can we show some ambition and push on from here? Time will tell. Might even have a better idea after tonight, although it looks more likely it will be another couple of weeks.
Welcome Adam!
BRRB
Shaved? Don’t go wasting good beer money on razor blades !
Ignoring inflation then Adam will become our most expensive signing.
It’s a good deal and one we should be making more regularly, with less speculative punts on unknowns.
Plenty of work remains to be done in the transfer market – in both directions.
BURNLEY78 @ 11:24 AM,
You and I seem to have a big misunderstanding…
We need to go way back for you to understand where I’m coming from.
A long time ago I suggested on here a structure that I thought would be much better for Celtic Football Club.
TBB who still posts now and again used to use his knowledge to put posters right quite often back then.
He told me in broad terms how a PLC operates, so I read up on it…
Now of course, I have no expertise, but I then understood the structure much better.
The Executive are beholden to the Board, the Board are beholden to the shareholders.
The Board have a fiducary duty to look after the shareholders money and to eke out profits from the Company for shareholders
It’s enshrined in corporate law
So over ten some years ago I came to the conclusion that the structure of Celtic PLC was not fit for purpose as a vehicle to ensure maximum success for Celtic Football Club.
The premise is, it delivers maximum success for PLC shareholders
Now, the main customers of Celtic PLC is the Celtic support, they put a lot of money into the PLC and they want to see the Celtic Football team successful.
So from the various stakeholders point of view what does the Board’s approach mean.
To the shareholders?
To the customer Base?
The PLC Board and the Executive have delivered incredibly well for the shareholders, which is it’s main duty.
From my perspective, this ownership model for Celtic FC is not fit for purpose.
The budget that the “Club” gets is much reduced imo, as the shareholders are (quite correctly from a corporate point of view) put first and foremost.
So please put my criticism of the Board and Executive in that context, it’s not personal, it’s not that I’m saying they’re doing a bad job running Celtic PLC.
It’s just Celtic Football Club are secondary to the PLC for them and that’s what I’m railing against.

Similar purchase prices; Adam and French Eddy.
Different styles of CF I know but mibby Adam is the more physical and more complete striker of the two.
Glad it’s done.

Chairboy,
That might well be the legal duty of a plc – but to view Celtic as “run for the benefit of shareholders” is too simplistic.
If that were true, that £100 million wouldn’t be sitting in the bank – it would be paid out as dividends or invested in money making schemes that have nothing to do with football.
Similarly, downturn in share price would result in executives being sacked every 5 minutes.
Like many on here, I bought shares when Fergus was raising money back in the 90’s. The preference shares paid a dividend of £14 per year and it has never increased in 30 years. Also like many others, I don’t cash the cheque.
I know that we would all like to see “fan ownership” – but let’s get real, it isn’t going to happen. The alternative seems to be being purchased by an Arab State, a US Investment Fund or some megalomaniac billionaire. Be careful what you wish for.

“The Board have a fiduciary duty to look after the shareholders money and to eke out profits from the Company for shareholders”
How they choose to do this is up to them though.
They can be cautious and argue saving for a rainy day or they can argue speculating to accumulate will grow the profile and result in better sponsorship/merchandising deals and allow them to increase ticket prices, win more prize money etc. which will in turn grow the company turnover etc.
I’m not sure the PLC structure is that restrictive. It is possible that somewhere in the EPL (or any other league) there will be PLCs running football clubs that are sitting on a pile of debt and still spending big.
Not that I want this for Celtic but just to illustrate a point.
QB
Celtic pay the price, a substantial fee that will no doubt have the Graeme & Daryl fraternity spewing, SMSM will lead the charge with ‘Celtic we’re robbed’ stories. A modern fee not likely to be repeated in this window for a single player, thankfully we could have gotten Ajeti and Barkas.
Having only one striker was of course verging on the ridiculous, now that we’ve got our limit of two ‘top class’ players, we’re still one away from Brendan’s ideal three, one a developing player. Expect two and a half weeks of speculation till deadline day.
More pressing is the Centre Back daisy chain of apparently ‘no good enoughs’ that Celtic have collected, for decent money it has to be said, up to four or five players depending on your level, and standards of quality. I reckon BR will settle for one in, and a couple out. The MOR replacement who has no chance of having the player’s ‘full package’ anyway, might even be forced to wait till January before he rolls up in Parkhead by the Springy Vaults.
As well a transfer window disappointment, there was always the surprise signing when we’d no money, so I’d be expecting the unexpected signing or two, now that we’re minted. The double euphoria and a squad status quo nearly restored, hopeful BR gets what he wants, Celtic yet again first, and pioneering legitimate spending of the only rightfully earned big money in Scotland.
PLC status also carries legal duties to be fully audited and comply with financial duty of care.
Maybe some would prefer to be de-listed and/or owned by some nutter so that we can go the same way as Rangers 1872.
Paul 67,
Mark Viduka you say. Hopefully not. Big, strong and skilful on the ball . Maybe, but a lazy horrendous attitude with a massive ego.
However if Adam really replicated Mark or Marco then Adamo would have cost us double.
That is the price of an O and an ego.
Anyway welcome back to Parkhead Adam. Now go and make yourself a legend.
HH.
There isn’t a real world where the Football club tanks and the shareholders are sitting by stroking their white cats, enjoying all their preferential share dividends.
Reason being if the club struggles then it will require more cash to turnaround performance, impacting everything … etc …. etc
No matter what business model is proposed, you are going to end up with a bunch of guys around a table making decisions…. for arguments sake let’s call them a board , who can then be abused by a section of the support as incompetent, liars , thieves etc … etc.
Apologies if this sounds a bit harsh but much of the non football commentary on here is frankly bizarre.

SFTBS @ 11:52 AM,
Well again, I didnt say I was dealing with An TEARMANN’s comment exclusively, there was obviously a previous narrative.
A bit of background…
https://www.canaries.co.uk/content/club-statement-group-led-by-mark-attanasio-acquires-minority-club-shareholding
“….Attanasio’s group have acquired shares from a variety of holders, which includes long-serving club director Michael Foulger’s holding.
Attanasio has also joined the club’s board of directors, effective immediately.
Foulger, who joined the club alongside current joint majority shareholders Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones in 1996, will vacate his seat on the board at the end of the season, having agreed to oversee a transition period over the coming months. Following this, Foulger will take up a new role of honorary vice president.
This transition has been going on for quite sometime, there has been a clear understanding that the Club had to keep running while the Corporate structure was evolving.
The idea that Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones stepping down had any baring on the Idah transfer is nonsense.
Norwich City sold Gabriel Sara to Galatasary last week, a much more significant transfer in both cash terms and in the way the player contributed to the Club than Adam’s.
I’m not sure what your angle was in raising it, however it has been picked up by Paul67 and I know exactly where he is coming from;)

At the risk of sounding patronizing it looks like you still don’t get it.
If Celtic were to behave like a “normal” PLC they would be behaving very differently – the board would be duty bound to issue dividends and look to increase the value of shareholders shareholdings.
We don’t issue dividends to ordinary shareholders and as shares are rarely traded the share price is pretty immaterial to ordinary shareholders
A PLC may not be the ideal structure for a football club, I’m not sure one exists. But what does happen at Celtic is the board are still carrying out their fiduciary duty – its run for the benefit of the shareholders, none of whom are looking for a financial return and all who see success on the pitch as the primary aim of the company
“It’s just Celtic Football Club are secondary to the PLC for them and that’s what I’m railing against.”
The evidence suggests that’s inaccurate.
Reckon Aberdeen will finish second this year, just a hunch

I’m not sure you failing to grasp the basics then following it up with a disrespectful dismissal of Paul67’s article is a particularly good look.

I am glad to see the arrival of Adam Idah
The high fee paid for a player most of us valued at a lot less does suggest that the club are prepared to give Brendan what he feels he needs even if it means paying English market prices and far more than we paid for the striker ahead of him at the club, for instance.
It also suggests to me that we have reached a point of realization that we are going to seriously struggle to find quality players at that price who are prepared to come to Scotland. I’d have preferred our transfer fee to be broken with a more exciting signing, but I’m aware now that it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to get players like that to come, so can accept the reality of the situation
I had, for a very brief moment, hopes that him signing for that fee might have done something to help with the toxic environment that Brendan talked about. Obviously pretty stupid of me, obviously here to stay.
Informed by a youngster, the guy posting the Tapia stuff has 35 Twitter followers, not to say it could happen….
Probably best avoided from now on

TIM MALONE WILL TELL @ 12:38 PM,

Thanks for the comments – I’ll start backwards…
“It’s just Celtic Football Club are secondary to the PLC for them and that’s what I’m railing against.”
The evidence suggests that’s inaccurate.”
Well if it did the Board would not be fulfilling the fiducary duties. The evidence strongly suggests they are.
“The board’s key purpose “is to ensure the company’s prosperity by collectively directing the company’s affairs, while meeting the appropriate interests of its shareholders and relevant stakeholders”
(Standards for the Board, IoD).
Now of course as, has been mentioned, there are various interpretations and strategies that a Board can undertake and still be fulfilling it’s key purpose.
The 100 mn in the bank does not belong to Celtic Football Club, that is shareholders money.
Now, the fact that it is sitting in the bank is a major bone of contention from both a PLC point of view and a football club point of view.
We could certainly invest more money in the Club and make more gains as a result.
BR Mk1 saw us making record profits, record revenues and record squad value.
Yet what was the risk benefit analysis telling us?
After BR Mk1 the revenues dropped as the domestic model once again dominated Board think.
That’s why Adam Idah could be a watershed moment, a change of policy and more ambition by the Board
We have a new UCL format, we have BR Mk1 and AP proving how we up our revenues and value.
That’s surely got to be the way forward.
Hail Hail

Saint Stivs re: gossip – cheers.
Couple of bits and pieces of gossip caught my eye
Brian McClair believes former club Celtic should attempt to sign Watford and Scotland defender Ryan Porteous, 25
(Is Brian McClair his agent?)
Midfielder Ianis Hagi, 25, wants to stay and fight for his place at Rangers after appearing to be on his way out of Ibrox. Hagi’s wages would go up if he plays another competitive first-team game for Rangers.
(The “game of poker” metaphor springs to mind. One guy is holding aces and the other has deuces)
Millwall? Seriously son? Goodbye and good luck.
Hopefully this time next week Adam will have scored his first goal and the fee paid will be old news.
I see Mikhailitchenko says there are similarities between Ukraine and Scotland-“the people are so patriotic”…
I doubt if he is referring to the ‘peepul’ of Scotland…you know, the ones singing God save the King in their England tops…
