Norwich accept Celtic offer on cusp of club sale

396

It is surely no coincidence that Norwich City accepted Celtic’s offer for Adam Idah, reportedly £8.5m up front with another £1m dependent on results and a 15% sell-on fee, within hours of the club being sold to an American investment group.

On accepting the deal for Idah, City added £8.5m to their balance sheet – approximately 12% of the club’s net book value.  It was a deal outgoing major shareholder Delia Smith was clearly motivated to accept before City’s new investors arrived.

That deal is still significant.  It will inevitably reach £9.5m, which, in time, will make Adam our most expensive signing ever.  It is also less than the asking price Celtic were faced with until this week; the sell-on percentage is also less than it was.

Adam reminds me of Mark Viduka.  Strong and skilful on the ball, he can control a long ball and bring others into play.  Without Adam coming in on loan in January, I don’t think we would have got over the line in so many crucial games in the run-in. The league would have gone elsewhere, and who can forget his contribution in the Cup Final?

There is still a medical to complete before the deal gets over the line.  Lots happened elsewhere yesterday.  We’ll touch on Bosun Lawal, Bojan Miovski and others later in the week.

  1. I’ll say this if we don’t sign at least 3 or 4 quality players in the next 15 days , we will definitely struggle in the Champions league, if we have signed Idah ,why hasn’t he been paraded at Celtic Park,

  2. We’ve found out BR is a great manager

We’ll probably never get to find out if clemente’s a good manager. The squad are ok in spfl terms.

Has he got a tendency to lose big games – there’s something his players’ mentality which shows up in big games – why did yefte plant his elbow into an opponent when he was already on a yellow.

The ross county game last year when they needed structure , they went missing (althoughpaul67 puts this down to not being able to squeeze anymore out of the squad).

some bizarre histrionics in games versus the champions.

He’s like a headteacher who comes into a failing school and calms it down but can’t get the best out of people.

  3. Thanks all for a most enjoyable read back during my morning meeting.

I must be in a good mood as I didn’t even notice the sarcasm in Chairbhoy’s post at 5:01 AM that B78 and TLT noticed. I was nodding agreeing with most of the comments following “Still, the upside…”

As much as I think we’ve overpaid (if reports are to be believed) for Idah who I think has a few rough edges and can be inconsistent he has cost us Oh + free money thanks to Sevco’s failure to reach the playoff round. Puts a much happier gloss on it. Idah, like the team, also seemed to get better as the season went on so hopefully he picks up where he left off.

Even if we do sigh 3 or 4 quality players we will likely still struggle.

The draw is crucial – some really good pot 3 and 4 teams I’d like to avoid.

“if we have signed Idah ,why hasn’t he been paraded at Celtic Park,”

I’d guess formalities or news management – give them the morning press as its all negative then follow it up with positive signing for us?

  5. My friends in Celtic,

Loving the more entertaining style we are playing. Long may it continue.

Right now our team is good enough to win everything that domestic football has to offer.

Our main competetors will be f@ cked by Christmas. Hampdump is the opposite of the Carlsberg effect. It drains teams. It is horrible. The place, the pitch, the viewing experience and its location.

So. If and when we strenghten and rationalise it must be for a stronger, leaner and more practicable squad. More equiped for European football which must be our benchmark.

I would also want us to optimise our match day experience. Lots of family street and field initiatives . Be bold, be all you can be. Gently remind our elected councillors, MSP,etc that there are consequences for not playing ball. Holyrood elections are 2026 , council elections 2027. As a club we have power and influence. Maybe they need that gentle reminder.

Our requirement for infrastructure modernisation is only going to worsen. It is a matter of when not if we must act.

Our future has never seemed so bright. Opportunity awaits, but we must grasp it.

  7. The new champions league format where we play each other once will help us. Traditionally , the crafty continentals ( kyiev as an example) learn more from the first game and adapt their tactics.

We have 8 one off games to surprise the opposition , we need to be really strong at the start of games as I suspect pot 1 and 2 teams will throw the kitchen sink first 15 minutes.

  8. Only watched the first half of the Dynamo Kiev game last night, that was enough. That Shifty Jifte was sent off in the second came as no surprise to me, in fact he could have gone in the first. Propper and Sooter could have followed him. The home team must have thought the referee was Scottish given the number of times they left the boot in. Kiev no angels themselves and not easily intimidated. Hampden is not going to work out well for the team from Ayebrokes, and neither is the fouling mentality instilled in every new player they sign.

More good news on the CL front, Mourinho is out and Lille move on to the next round.

So Daniel is leaving in January.

I genuinely bear no ill will to him.

    I wish him well.

That said I don’t see the point of giving him space in the training group at any level … which could be used by another prospect who is staying with us.

I know the optics on this wouldn’t be great … but I’d give Daniel the day off.

    Re CL prospects

Going solely on the evidence of last two seasons, 2 points then 4 points?

    We’ll struggle.

I’m feeling slightly more optimistic though

    (Caveat: gut, not evidence)

The squad even in its current form is more settled, more cohesive and less injured than the group that played last season’s CL campaign.

Good point made earlier by EKBhoy about what the new format will do to the approach and psychology for games.

Right now I expect EVERY Pot 3 and Pot 4 team to be thinking exactly the same thing

    – Go for it !

    – Get 10 points from 12 against pot 3/4 teams

    – sneak a point or two against pot1/2 teams

    – Ta da ! 12 points. Play offs here we come

The best prepared teams with the smartest coaching teams who can slightly tweak their approaches are more likely to prevail IMHO.

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

I also suspect (again with zero evidence) the stretched approach to 8 games rather than 6 will see some, not all, richer clubs, managing fixtures differently … placing slightly more emphasis on perceptibly tougher domestic fixtures occurring at the same time as CL group games.

  18. “Fan ownership”. If that had even the tiniest whiff of what goes on here,we would be a bigger basket case than them.EG,

What a shower of miserable bassas this Board is,all that money, and won’t spend it.( Group A ).

(Group B),Right we will buy Bernardo, but try and get the price down

( Group A),Just how long are you miserable bassas going to spend trying to save a couple of million, tight as fek.

( Group B) Right we have signed Idah for 8.5 million.

(Group A),Whit ?that’s too much money to pay.

And so,like a load of Jewish scholars, they would retire to a room, and spend a year, debating every minute detail of the deal.

Fan ownership,my arse,as a funny man off repeated.

  19. back to basics

No point in keeping Dan Kelly on the books now. He turned down a new contract, and apparently has signed a pre-contract with Millwall. Get on the phone and tell them we’ll take the £275,000. We are producing half decent players, Doak, Vata, Lawel, Kelly plus others, but some it seems want to run before they can walk.

And another thing let us forget about Owen Beck, put our faith in Mathew Anderson, while we still can, seems to have a better attitude than some of the others I mentioned.

  20. the long wait is over on

Two thoughts occur about that 2nd yellow last night:-

Would the reaction be as vitriolic if the ref wasn’t Italian , thus carrying at least a whiff of “Roman “ about him? Genuine question.

    and

From the hysterical reaction one might be forgiven for thinking that this was a club and a support that isn’t used to disappointing , even baffling , decisions going against them. Most other clubs accept that as part and parcel of the game and human nature. It’s almost as if it wasn’t something that happened to them in their domestic league with any regularity. Perhaps it’s the shock of the new. Who could say?

    Anyhoo, still sniggering.

I’d like to be a bigger person but I’m just not.

  21. Big Jimmy,

Or Cifuentes, who the media said was going to net them £ 4.2 million.Turns out, they had it the wrong way round, and its,£ 2.4 million. Then again, they could have said,£42 million, makes no difference, they will still get zero for the dud,but for a brief second, their was a flash of expectancy provided by the media for the gullibles, only to be extinguished like a fag end put into the dregs of a beer can.

if we have signed Idah ,why hasn’t he been paraded at Celtic Park

Nobody said we had signed Idah. The story that broke was that Celtic and Norwich had finally agreed on a fee + add-ons and the player would undergo a medical before signing. He still has to sign a contract before he is paraded. With the intricacies of modern day contracts, that can take days.

This is where the order of who we play when will be almost as important as who we draw. I’d much rather be playing Pot 1 and 2 teams later on (once they are safely through). That said, if we end up playing a team already out and with nothing to play for but with a tough domestic game coming up that might also work out – you just never know. Luck of the draw helps with what teams we face but the order in which we play can be a good thing one week then a bad thing the next!

Either way, at least its a little bit fresher – and 8 teams once rather than 4 teams twice even if some fans are confident “we’d beat Keiv home AND away if they made it through” :)
