Norwich accept Celtic offer on cusp of club sale

396

It is surely no coincidence that Norwich City accepted Celtic’s offer for Adam Idah, reportedly £8.5m up front with another £1m dependent on results and a 15% sell-on fee, within hours of the club being sold to an American investment group.

On accepting the deal for Idah, City added £8.5m to their balance sheet – approximately 12% of the club’s net book value.  It was a deal outgoing major shareholder Delia Smith was clearly motivated to accept before City’s new investors arrived.

That deal is still significant.  It will inevitably reach £9.5m, which, in time, will make Adam our most expensive signing ever.  It is also less than the asking price Celtic were faced with until this week; the sell-on percentage is also less than it was.

Adam reminds me of Mark Viduka.  Strong and skilful on the ball, he can control a long ball and bring others into play.  Without Adam coming in on loan in January, I don’t think we would have got over the line in so many crucial games in the run-in. The league would have gone elsewhere, and who can forget his contribution in the Cup Final?

There is still a medical to complete before the deal gets over the line.  Lots happened elsewhere yesterday.  We’ll touch on Bosun Lawal, Bojan Miovski and others later in the week.

Top English clubs can hoover up the best prospects from others academy – most teams need an academy to bring on their own players or hopefully sell one now and then.

Not sure where footballers would develop nowadays without the academy structure.

Its about 5 miles from Biddulph- i didn’t take leafy Cheshire as a hotbed of anti islamists

  3. Gene,

Very true for many bigger clubs. However Celtic need to make a pragmatic decision without sentiment.

Also, I noticed your comment about public spending in Scotland being higher than Englandshire. Spent on the wrong priorities me thinks. This morning the Scottish government stated they would follow suit with the removal of the Heating Fuel allowance for most pensioners.

Absolute shocking decision by Westminster and Holyrood, especially Scotland where put simply its much colder.

    Cheers and HH.

  4. No doubt we were very poor last night and need to look inwards rather than blaming the ref or anyone else.

Our form is just unacceptable, it must improve and quickly.

Full backs getting torn apart time and again by teams like Ross county tells it’s own story. Last night is the first of many defeats this season I’m afraid. If we can’t defend, can’t attack and can’t score or even threaten to score what chance have we got. Far too many poor signings who get selected far too often has put us in this position

We won’t know whether Clement is the real deal or not until it’s his squad…. hopefully we get to that point.

Clement started getting paid to be our manager last October, so out of curiosity, gonna give a rough date when it becomes “his” squad? If somebody gets hired to be a manager at a failing Tesco… do they get to replace the entire staff before the branch officially becomes their’s? All the while getting paid in full (and being offered a contract extension). Or do they work with what they’ve got and use their skills to improve the team that’s there like any good manager does? Fed up hearing the line that ‘it’s not his team so don’t judge him yet’. It’s not Football Manager.

It’s all about choices- unlike Scotland we don’t already have free prescriptions, free uni education or adult social care.

  6. A ridiculous decision by the referee which ruined a very even contest. I also feel Butland was caught out too easily at his near post for the first goal. Europa league it is and probably for this squad, the level that is where we are.

We’re nowhere near Europa league level either.

Do you really think Clement wanted to play a CL qualifier at a half empty Hampden with only 2 new players in the starting 11?

Two kids, an OOC from Aberdeen and a £350k punt from the Cypriot league?

He’s not Pep but he’s basically working with a squad that’s weaker than last season due to having to reduce the wage bill.

  7. GREENPINATA @ 11:17 AM,

As far as the Academy is concerned I’d say the opposite.

We had a blueprint for a state of the art academy in 2004.

Imagine if we had gone through with that.

Look at what the best Spanish, French, English, Portuguese, Dutch academies have achieved in the last twenty years.

Even if we achieved half of that, we would have had a huge success.

Now Barrowfield is being developed and the “pathway” is there, we need to double down on the academy not give up on it.

And if Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Lavercusen etc want to poach our talent, make the bhoys aware of where they stand.

100% comment to Celtic and the pathway, fully focused on that or bye…

It’s a real shame about Danny Kelly but the bhoys must look at him, Ben Doak, Liam Morrison etc and decide, is it worth getting my head down, taking the Celtic pathway and focusing on my development or chasing the moonbeams where the grass is supposed to be greener…

Would the reaction be as vitriolic if the ref wasn’t Italian , thus carrying at least a whiff of “Roman “ about him?

  10. See the pesky random SPFL computer managed to give our Europa League entrants 6 “home” fixtures and only 2 away fixtures in the weekends following European ties, unfortunately now 8 Sunday games with maybe 6 wee Hampden trips … unless Ibrox is playable by then :-)
