Norwich Celtic negotiations

433

Based on indications set down in January, Celtic expected the fee asked for Adam Idah to rise to £6m.  When the clubs started discussions this close season, Norwich actually asked £10m plus add-ons.  We are all entitled to a view on whether Adam is good or poor value at that level, but a £10m+ budget opens the door to many more options across the globe.

For that money, you could have practically any striker in the lower leagues in Germany, Spain and Italy, many in the top flights in those countries, and all but a few in the English lower leagues, where Adam currently plies his trade.  That fee changes the consideration from what is Adam’s value, to a comparison with at least a dozen options elsewhere.  Norwich and Celtic were both entitled to hold tight for a while.

We have not gone near a fee like that since our old pal Peter was in charge and he authorised a £9m spend (also plus add-ons) for Odsonne Edouard six years ago.  Curiously, that transaction was also for a backup striker.  The unexpected departure of Moussa Dembele a few weeks later elevated Odsonne ahead of schedule.  I expect Michael Nicholson will be keen to authorise a big ticket spend on his watch.

Indications last night suggest the clubs are sitting around the Zoom table and a deal is close.  Norwich can still sit tight for three weeks; Celtic will need a convincing alternate deal to conclude earlier.  As always, try to block out the bed wetters [I never know if they prefer their status to be hyphenated; is it bed-wetters?  It always feels awkward to ask them, that anxiety trigger seems so delicate.].

  1. Great to see Dundee really playing well under Tony Doc. My understanding is John Nelms and their board, if not their fans, are very well disposed towards Celtic.

Great also to see Hearts struggle albeit rangers fans seem to see them as a challenger for 3rd place.

  2. Rangers get their second win in the last 10 domestic fixtures today.

Headlines you won’t read as the Glasgow giants soar to the top of the SPFL for 2 hours.

  3. A heard a player on the radio ex St Mirren who suggested due to sporting enterigrty they had to play there first round of fixtures at the old stadium prior to moving to and using the new stadium. I wonder if the same rules will apply to Sevco.

    🤔

  4. Not sure how var sees that handball but does not see the assault by the hearts full back as a red card ?

Also reckon that ref Robertson will be responsible for a player getting badly injured. Last week he allowed Kilmarnock to foul with reckless impunity and did not book until very late on.

  6. Or are we banking money for no Group Stage football in the next couple of years, because we have contributed next to fk all to the coefficient for years and years, and we need to play Qualifiers? And some are claiming European football after Christmas as an achievement, when actually the format has changed, the Board couldn’t have put it any better……oh wait….

we will have “league group” games in europe for years to come.

we would need to finish 6th not to have qualifiers,

we just need manage the play off.

some actually want the europa to garnish some co-efficient points.

  10. BURNLEY78 @ 6:10 PM,

Yes, once EPL football was not an option, we were bound to make adjustments.

It just shows the lack of ambition throughout Scottish Football that not one Club seen the demise of Rangers an opportunity to get regular domestic silverware and European football.

This new format UCL group stage really gives us the opportunity to get to the next level, I’ve been saying for a few seasons now how important this is.

Fortress Parkhead could well see us getting outside the group stage for the first time in a decade and I seriously think we can make it.

    Hail Hail

  11. BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 6:22 PM,

The transfer strategy was great at building the bank balance, the failure to back fill left us floundering.

Now, it’s not going to be easy to replace an eight figure player but we didn’t get close.

Wanyama was never truly replaced, VVD left a hole at CH for many seasons, Jota was a huge miss and we still have an issue at left back years after KT went. It’s something we need to get better at.

The new format UCL with games after Christmas will really give us an opportunity to be more ambitious.

If we are still in the running for the last sixteen playoffs at the end of the year and I can see no reason why not, we have the January window to strengthen for the last two matches.

It should mean a change in strategy, whether it does or not we’ll see…

    Hail Hail

  12. Dermot Desmond he doesn’t own Celtic ,the sooner he sells his shares the better ,he is rarely seen inside Celtic Park, the fans have put more into the club than him ,watching the ladies this afternoon I didn’t see much upgrades inside the stadium

  13. I do not think Celtic FC have suggested any change to the current SPL format over the last 25-30 years. We are not interested in a bigger league, the only way through which we could give more younger players more opportunities to play at a higher level in Scotland. We are stuck with the Old Firm construct and a league where we play teams 3-4 times and 5-6 if we also draw them in the domestic cups. It is in Pau67s words “the only show in town” and has been sold as such through to 2029 so absolutely no prospect of change. More teams mean more players involved which could be a good thing but not if it reduces the number of Old Firm matches. No talk of “Glasgow Derbies” (we share the Old Firm brand in over thirty types of business), it is all flannel. Improve Scottish football? Ye gotta be kidding!

    Phenomenal player!

Got his documentary on Apple TV now. Look up some of his best shots on YouTube. Guy was and still is a freak of nature with his ability to score from almost anywhere on the court.

    Unbelievable

    —————

He literally changed the defensive game of basketball due to his ability to score a load of 3 pointers in a game. Teams had to change the way they defended against his team, in order to keep pace. And obviously the 3-point thing also caught on.

No one scores them like him though. Only 6 ft 2” as well, which is small for an NBA player. 😳🤷🏼‍♂️😃👍
