Based on indications set down in January, Celtic expected the fee asked for Adam Idah to rise to £6m. When the clubs started discussions this close season, Norwich actually asked £10m plus add-ons. We are all entitled to a view on whether Adam is good or poor value at that level, but a £10m+ budget opens the door to many more options across the globe.
For that money, you could have practically any striker in the lower leagues in Germany, Spain and Italy, many in the top flights in those countries, and all but a few in the English lower leagues, where Adam currently plies his trade. That fee changes the consideration from what is Adam’s value, to a comparison with at least a dozen options elsewhere. Norwich and Celtic were both entitled to hold tight for a while.
We have not gone near a fee like that since our old pal Peter was in charge and he authorised a £9m spend (also plus add-ons) for Odsonne Edouard six years ago. Curiously, that transaction was also for a backup striker. The unexpected departure of Moussa Dembele a few weeks later elevated Odsonne ahead of schedule. I expect Michael Nicholson will be keen to authorise a big ticket spend on his watch.
Indications last night suggest the clubs are sitting around the Zoom table and a deal is close. Norwich can still sit tight for three weeks; Celtic will need a convincing alternate deal to conclude earlier. As always, try to block out the bed wetters [I never know if they prefer their status to be hyphenated; is it bed-wetters? It always feels awkward to ask them, that anxiety trigger seems so delicate.].

I am thinking of it purely as a business.

I get that, I really do. However my thinking on this is as a supporter who wants to see a Celtic team be all they can be in the CL.
Prudence is fine within reason, however Selling our best and not investing is not prudence in my opinion.

Sorry I need to disagree re domestic cups. I would play a percentage of fringe and young players.
How do we know if tjey are good enough for Celtic unless we try them.
Just pay your money for ST,cup tickets, strips, training gear, and STFU….
My recollections of 60s – 70s crowds were similar to SFTB’s.
Did a wee bit of looking and found some interesting numbers on fitba stats.com.
Biggest home average attendance from foundation to 1950 was 29,867 in season 48-49.
Season 66-67 : 31,373
Season 68-69 34,734 , the biggest of the first nine in a row period.
Season 71-72. saw an average attendance of 31, 241. This was the last time in the “ European cup era” that we had an average attendance of over 30,000.
The driving force for the ten club league was said to be to reverse dwindling attendances, although some people (me and my da) believed it was a way to break Celtic’s dominance.
The next time Celtic had an average attendance of over 30,000 was in 87-88, with a figure of 33, 199.
After 88-89, there was no average attendance over 30,000 till the modern era.
Other interesting stat is the drop in average attendances to around 45,000 due to some event in Scottish football, with a bounce following the appointment of Brendan Rodgers the first time.

SC could not raise 100 shareholders for some petition to the board,
everybody complaining is just a waste of keyboard clicks.

55,000 v rangers, 70,000 at cup finals, 50,000 for european games
then 18,000 for home league games.
there were times when aberdeen and hearts were getting more than us.
i blamed these fans for not turning up,
like the modern day seat blockers except they didnt fund the club,
How do we know attendances were correct in previous years. ?
Take 1988 Celtic v Dundee. Non ticket game. Celtic directors later confessed that the official attendance of just over 60,000 was actually a misrepresentation as the crowd was really over 72,000 with the gates locked.
I could easily think of more such games.

i said this often,
the young team will get slughtered as soon as a mis-placed pass,
loss the cup game and it becomes a rabid support.
read back to the killie cup game last season, the comments were diabolical.
celtic support only goes as far as winning games.
lose or draw is not tolerated, eve, no matter who plays or who we play against.
the reaction to 3-3 against aberdeen was hysterical.
18,000 for home games? – what a waste of space that wis👍

how many youths would you play in the cup games, would you expect them still to win ?
would you put the same team out to the final if they proved good enough ?

To play for Celtic you need not just football ability but a certain mindset.
If players, even young player cannot handle a bit of terracing criticism then perhaphs they do not posess the charactestic required to play for Celtic.

We don’t really know exact figures as we can only go with what official attendances were provided but don’t really know how those figures were reached.
In the 70s, gate money was checked against number of clicks of the turnstile and gatemen were told whether their money was up or down against what they were expected to hand in.
Also no idea how many people got in via lifts over, doubling up at the turnstiles and getting in because they knew a gateman or steward.
Also, back in the day they used to open the big wooden doors with 20-25 minutes to go for people to leave and people would come in at that point.
I’m not sure where the folk who created the page got their info, but I’m assuming contemporary newspaper reports.
However my memory of attending games through the 60s – 90s was a lot of empty spaces at most games.
Saint Stivs,
I would play a mix of fringe players and regular first team players.
I would have the strongest bench possible as back up.
If im honest I would play our strongest team in the final. Just like Arsen Wenger. His philosophy ” To provide first team opportunities to young players as early as possible ”
I would suggest that is far easier to do for a club like Celtic.

1970-08-10: Celtic 3-1 Rangers, Glasgow Cup Final
Jock Stein only made one announcement pre-game and that was that Evan Williams would start in goal. John Fallon had been set to continue but the sudden death of his brother saw him committed to family matters.
Billy McNeill was rested as was Brogan, Johnstone, Lennox, Hood and Hughes – very much a second choice team in terms of position and mix – who had all played in the season opener against Hearts in the League Cup. Bobby Murdoch captained the side.
It was clear that Willie Waddell the new Rangers manager wanted to win this one and they fielded a strong side.
Teams
Celtic:
Williams, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, Connelly, Cattanach, Callaghan, Hay, Wallace, Macari, Quinn (Davidson).
Goals:- Gemmell 2 (3 19), Quinn (48).
Rangers:
RM Watson, Jardine, Mathieson, Greig, Jackson, D Smith, Henderson, Conn, Stein, McDonald (Miller), Johnston
Goal:- Greig (27).
Referee: T. Wharton (Glasgow).
Attendance: 58,144.

The official attendance for that game was 68,000 although it was obvious there was more than that. However, the club can only count turnstile clicks and a few thousand gained entry over the walls or through exit gates.
How can the club possibly count supporters who didn’t go through a turnstile?
For decades the old board have been ridiculed for the 68,000 attendance figure, but what else could they do?
The internet is awash with fake news regarding signings and particular the manufactured computerised fake voices of various players Celtic bound.
The whole circus is great for media arousing curiosity is a complete farce and is treated by me with the proverbial large grain of salt.
Other comments regarding Adam, could he have an attitude problem ?
obvious begrudgery coming from some source. more rubbish, the lad has represented his country at present and from underage level and indeed in his four month spell as a Celtic player with pride. Did we not pay 17 million for both Odsonne and Dembelle who arrived unproven at Celtic Park.
Tom,
The official attendance was 62,000 for that game.

I think Edouard was £9m
And Dembele was a training fee as there was a loophole that we could exploit with Fulham, may be wrong but i dont recall any signifigant fee on purchase.training fee was around 3to400k.
