Based on indications set down in January, Celtic expected the fee asked for Adam Idah to rise to £6m. When the clubs started discussions this close season, Norwich actually asked £10m plus add-ons. We are all entitled to a view on whether Adam is good or poor value at that level, but a £10m+ budget opens the door to many more options across the globe.
For that money, you could have practically any striker in the lower leagues in Germany, Spain and Italy, many in the top flights in those countries, and all but a few in the English lower leagues, where Adam currently plies his trade. That fee changes the consideration from what is Adam’s value, to a comparison with at least a dozen options elsewhere. Norwich and Celtic were both entitled to hold tight for a while.
We have not gone near a fee like that since our old pal Peter was in charge and he authorised a £9m spend (also plus add-ons) for Odsonne Edouard six years ago. Curiously, that transaction was also for a backup striker. The unexpected departure of Moussa Dembele a few weeks later elevated Odsonne ahead of schedule. I expect Michael Nicholson will be keen to authorise a big ticket spend on his watch.
Indications last night suggest the clubs are sitting around the Zoom table and a deal is close. Norwich can still sit tight for three weeks; Celtic will need a convincing alternate deal to conclude earlier. As always, try to block out the bed wetters [I never know if they prefer their status to be hyphenated; is it bed-wetters? It always feels awkward to ask them, that anxiety trigger seems so delicate.].

league table on the bbc puts rangers top of the league, updated a nano second as the whistle blew. wee lambs.
Good luck to Bosun Lawel down in Stoke who got off to a good start in the EFL today. That’s three players, Doak, Vata and now Lawel, (that I can think of offhand) that are products of our system now making career elsewhere. Quite encouraging in a way, as is Dane Murray playing with a good club with a good manager over the full season. Got a lot going for him, so good to see him back on the right track. Young Mathew Anderson, with a season long loan to Austria behind should be brought into the first team squad, to keep his progress going, at least let us try and give him a path to the senior team. Looks the part. So, some green shoots at last that suggest our youth player system might deliver a player or two into the squad, if we can take their development a step further.
Poor JOHNNY . Blasts penalty over the bar.
the most predictable penalty miss since i took one for my local under 9s a few decades ago
Celtic Mac.
What is the point of a youth player system if we don’t give them competitive game time ?

Pointless giving young players game time for the hell of it, but if they merit it that is a different scenario. Ben Doak was given some game time by Ange, but jumped ship to Liverpool where he might be shipped out on loan. When you think of our turnover of wide players (now widos btw) Doak might have got far more game time at Celtic than Anfield. Vata likewise, Brendan told him he’d be part of three central forwards, the result? Could be stuck at a junction in Watford. Both had and have potential but they decided their future was best away from Celtic. Works both ways. Bosun has the physique but maybe not the nous, could do well at Stoke. Others have taken a longer road than Orwell to get to Wigan, or Blackpool come to that. Dane Murray might have got more game time had injury not struck but he is back, if not on that shining path, (Maoist reference there) at least on the right one. Got the height and the nous, could see him back at Celtic in a year or so.
Would like to see Anderson given the opportunity, but most on here want us to buy a left back/wingback, Matthew just might save us the bother……and the cost. Lets hope so.
Celtic Mac,
I hear you.
What is the point of an Academy then ?

Atalanta bid €23 million for O’Riley
A rip roaring start by Vale with an away win at Salford. Will it last – watch this space.

It is DD and the exec who make the strategic decisions and implement them. Not the board which folk seem to bang on about.
As for forward thinking. I would say plugging the dyke when our rivals were illegally blowing their club to oblivion was forward thinking.
Right sizing the business back then at a critical stage when vanity would have been an easy option to continue to spend spend like those across the city.
Hence they went bust and we didn’t. We just kept on winning.
Aren’t there UEFA mandatory requirements for youth teams/development program before a club will be allocated a license to compete in UEFA competition?
I could be wrong.
Chairboy
I think you will see that Celtic owner and exec ensured that we became solvent when our rivals went down. This ensured the one horse race. Sadly it also ensured our Scottish coefficient was never going to allow guaranteed CL participation for many years and our fans failed to turn up for a league where we did not have genuine competition.

Interesting point Gp
Sparks 2 questions for me in a difficult context
Why have a youth system at all?-1
What is their competitive league system-2
I think both 1&2 are interlocked or should be
A 3rd point would be our attitude as fans.
On having a youth system,at the moment the “b” league is far to remote from our top league, imo we as a club should be canvassing for a reserve type league where the jump between ‘b’league and premier is not so vast,we would also have the advantage of fusing experience with incoming youth made easier.
A competitive game in a competutive league system would be improved with a bigger league, say 16 teams, instead of the constant whoring to and manipulation by tv companies.
Would we as fans accept dilution of rules say in cup competitions league or Scottish cup? I dont think we would accept defeat as winning is in our DNA.We would shred the defeated team say ,if it denied a cup win,or treble,in recent years we have a hubris and impatience bout us if we loose at all with pitchforks ready
:-)

That would be an ecumenical matter….

Good Spot- I wondered why only one game was recorded against that Spanish team whereas all other teams had an even number of games against us- The revised accurate figures should show 8 wins out of 38 against Spanish teams and we’ve only failed to record a win against Atletico.
Our percentage of wins against Spanish teams is just under 19%
The only nations we are poorer against are Austria (16.67%), Germany (16%) and Greece (0%) . The Greece figure is based on no wins as we had 2 draws and 2 defeats in our 4 ties. We need to kebab a Greek team sometime soon.
Tim Malone will tell 6.09
I think there are mandatory uefa regulations regards youth, alas in Scotland there is no need to pursue and reconstruct a league system for them to play in!!

CHAIRBHOY @ ages ago
Yes a ‘Behemoth’
That has already changed the financial dynamic of Scottish Football albeit without relative Euro respectability, yet. The current Celtic transfer strategy has as we agree, amassed an unheard of ‘ bank balance ‘ which effectively started with Brendan Rodgers and Moussa Dembele £22M and home grown Kieran Tierney. To properly replace KT we’d have had to spend £25M like Arsenal did when they bought him, to properly replace Jota the same, you’d need to find the next diamond in the midden ( we didn’t ) or spend £25M like the Saudi’s?
Celtic invented like a lot of other things ‘legitimate’ big club football finances in Scotland, our policy should and does ‘pee all over’ having no strategy at all, and manifests itself in domestic dominance. The trick of European success requires more modernisation to bring us into line, we have to spend more than smaller clubs from better leagues. Brugge, I think for example have spent £20M so far, with the same three weeks, left in their transfer market.
We’re back with Brendan (we think?) in charge of recruitment, another silent CEO, and are three down and on our last striker standing, two games into the new season. I’m not overly confident we have men of vision that will fully modernise Celtic, but I still have hope in my heart.
HH
Hearts are Hibsing it- a YC that should have been a red, then an own goal and finaly conceding a penalty- all in first half injury time- 3:0 to Dundee so far
