Not all Celtic heroes wear hoops

323

In 1994, when the Bank of Scotland told Celtic they would not pay wages the next day as the club was overdrawn, the old board had finally run out of road.  That evening, chairman, Kevin Kelly, informed John Keane of the situation.  Keane asked his manager at Bank of Ireland to deposit £1m in Celtic’s account at Bank of Scotland as soon as the branch opened the next morning.

Keane had been one of those working to open Celtic up and break the stranglehold of the three families who had largely controlled the club for decades.  He became a director when the old board was replaced and retired from that position today.

That £1m payment was made without control or agreements, there was no guarantee it would save the club or that the old regime would actually move on.  Keane later said, “Administration was unthinkable. It would have been a slur upon the name of the Club.”

Had the wages not been paid, Celtic would have entered administration, and this would not have been like the Craig Whyte-appointed Rangers administration. High earners would have been released, anything sellable would have been sold.  Celtic would have been left with the lowest cost squad able to fulfil fixtures.

The most striking aspect about John Keane is his contentment for others to take the limelight.  He tells no one what he did.  It has never been about him, always Celtic.

Not all Celtic heroes wear hoops.

I’m using uBlock Origin on Firefox these days, finding it much better than Adbock Plus.

Doesn’t help your problem :O) though, easiest way to solve it would be to uninstall Adblock then reinstall, it should then default back to blocking all ads on all sites

  8. Shame that SOT has decided to call it quits with his non flounce ;o)

Would’ve been good to know why he thinks the forum is now an echo chamber?

The forum still seems pretty split the same as its always been – anti and pro board and those that fall somewhere inbetween.

In the last article I showed the dramatic increase in injuries at Celtic during the Rodgers reign. Looking at data from Liverpool a pattern emerge.

    …………

    Thanks for this..

I’ll be watching injuries & matches lost with interest this season.

I would think it would be down to bad luck though it will be interesting to see what happens at Leicester.

Wonder what the stats were at Swansea.

To all fellow Holy Cross Doggers..

Was Cocozza’s Cafe the same as Chez Suzette?

The basement of a cafe nbear the cross..?

Just looked at that second sentence again…

No I never did meet anyone called Suzette while I was dogging…

    …………………..

I had Willie Fox for French I think, he was small but solid & could handle himself – now I know why.

Had Mr Coyle for Maths – bless his socks he nurse me to a Maths O level. I was hopeless at it.

Mr Fitzpatrick for English – another man who rarely got any problems – just the stare was enough.

    Heedie was Frank Morgan…

Memory a little hazy now, I recall Cocozza’s Cafe as being half way up the High St on the RHS from the bottom. Could be wrong of course, wouldn’t be the first time. My era was 67-72.

I can never hear the Sonny & Cher song “I Got You, Babe” but I’m in that place in the dark as the jokebox in the corner belted it out.

Hated the song but the lassies all loved it so I smiled….

    Transfer windows questions.

Scottish window – when does it close?

Uefa CL window – when does it close?

Is it correct that we can sign one player after the Uefa deadline?

You’ve got my memory going about Holy Cross. Peter Reid was PE teacher (I was on football team and on 4 x 100 relay team), Siv Coyle was known as the Walking Woodbine, I received 6 of the belt from Peter Fitzpatrick for writing a very funny essay that probably had the staff room in uproar. Pansy Smith got his nickname because of his cultured accent. Good times.

The wee van was run by a guy I knew as “Wee Joe” – he sold single cigarettes to anyone witht he cash – age was no barrier.

There was another van – I think run by a man I knew as Mario.

Mario was hyperactive whereas Wee Joe seemed to be asleep most of the time.
