Not all Celtic heroes wear hoops

323

In 1994, when the Bank of Scotland told Celtic they would not pay wages the next day as the club was overdrawn, the old board had finally run out of road.  That evening, chairman, Kevin Kelly, informed John Keane of the situation.  Keane asked his manager at Bank of Ireland to deposit £1m in Celtic’s account at Bank of Scotland as soon as the branch opened the next morning.

Keane had been one of those working to open Celtic up and break the stranglehold of the three families who had largely controlled the club for decades.  He became a director when the old board was replaced and retired from that position today.

That £1m payment was made without control or agreements, there was no guarantee it would save the club or that the old regime would actually move on.  Keane later said, “Administration was unthinkable. It would have been a slur upon the name of the Club.”

Had the wages not been paid, Celtic would have entered administration, and this would not have been like the Craig Whyte-appointed Rangers administration. High earners would have been released, anything sellable would have been sold.  Celtic would have been left with the lowest cost squad able to fulfil fixtures.

The most striking aspect about John Keane is his contentment for others to take the limelight.  He tells no one what he did.  It has never been about him, always Celtic.

Not all Celtic heroes wear hoops.

I loved the trumpet in the BB King version of Guess Who.

Seemed to me it was either electronically altered with a Piezobarrel pickup or maybe it was even a digital trumpet…but the playing was great either way..

Interesting reading on catholic schools…my wife is a primary school deputy head teacher and as a non catholic she cannot apply for a job at a catholic school yet teachers who are catholic can freely apply for jobs in “non denominational schools”.Seems a bit unfair (even discriminatory) to me.Does it seem unfair to anyone else.

    Good evening,

Is there a reason the blog is not updating unless you are logged in. Not that bothered but an irritation if you’re just popping in for an update. No hassle, just asking. HH

    Two things occur to me…

Are “Catholic” teachers really Catholic in the religious sense or are they teachers who were originally educated in Catholic schools themselves?

If they are still practising Catholics AND teachers then the recruitment and selection of staff at Non Catholic schools is biased against people like your wife.

Where is the roadblock on her applying for jobs in Catholic schools?

I assume that it’s the church, but the reality must be that the Education Authority AND parents of children at Non Catholic schools had to have endorsed this policy. Surely, or maybe not!!

Which begs the follow up question of whether there is a shortage of Non Catholic teachers for the vacancies in Non Catholic schools while at the same time there is a surplus of Catholic teachers for the vacancies in Catholic schools. Thus the policy is designed, albeit in a wonky way, to ensure that all pupils have enough teachers.

It badly needs explaning to all concerned with egos & religious affiliations left putside the discussion room.

    HH

If not – then things need to be put on a level footing.

    The hand of/fool time…,

The teachers need to go through the Catholic teaching system a separate college which includes a fain amount of religious instruction that provides the framework for religious guidance suitable for Catholic children , I’m no sure but I doubt if the Catholic teachers colleges discriminate against who can apply/enter their courses as that would be sectarian. The end result is that all teachers at Catholic schools are qualified to provide religious guidance to the pupils.

There are plenty on here who could answer that question better but I think that is the jist of it.

    Good Morning Timland,

I’m at a wee bit of a loss here, maybe someone can help me out.

John Keane is retiring after exceptional and selfless dedication to the Celtic Football and Athletic Company. The Club and it’s rescue in the nineties.

He has, as far as I can see, received deserved accolades for his part in this and the self-effacing way he has conducted himself.

Could someone point out the part played by Peter Lawwell, I’m missing the point here.

    Hail Hail

    Hi chairbhoy hope your well

I hope am not pickin you up wromg but to me PL,who was a Celtic man long before he became ceo,was probably as ceo thanking

John keane as a fellow Celt and board member, for the pivotal role he played in our clubs history and primarily for continuation.

Our sudden interest in Sawyers seems to have coincided with news that Harper signed an extension @ WBA.

Lettuce hope Romaine can make the adjustment to the SPFL. From the Utube vids, he’s got a keen eye for goal and looks a decent passer – but shee, the pace of thon Championship is alarmingly slow. It’d need to be chop-chop for Romaine, whose salad days are hopefully yet to arrive………. HH
