Not the end of the world if Rangers don’t survive! Too true

1216

I caught an online synopsis of Rangers’ owner Craig Whyte’s recent meeting with a group of the club’s fans last night.  The group report that Whyte hopes, “’Rangers Football Club Plc’ could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t.”

We can all agree, it sure wouldn’t be the end of the world if that particular entity didn’t survive, although I suspect Mr Whyte is alluding to the possibility of a new club emerging.  Celtic Quick News first raised the liquidation scenario back in October and explained a prepack route for Rangers Newco FC.  If a football company goes into liquidation a secured creditor, in Rangers case this would be Craig Whyte, can retain control of key assets, such as the stadium, but would not own a football club which was part of any league structure.

In Scotland any Newco FC would have to apply for membership of the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League.  A simple majority of the SPL board (three votes required) would be enough to vote a club into the SPL.  The board currently has representatives from Celtic, Dundee United, Motherwell and St Johnstone, as well as SPL chief exec, Neil Doncaster.  It is chaired by Ralph Topping, who only votes in the event of a stalemate.

If Rangers lose their tribunal against Her Majesty’s tax authorities (think of her underequipped soldiers), Celtic will not be the only club who will consider the commercial and competitive disadvantage they suffered while paying their taxes for the last 12 years, but they may be one of the few clubs that would survive without the sponsorship and TV income dependent on a club with the Rangers brand participating in the league.  Celtic would vote against allowing Rangers into the league but I can see zero chance of Dundee United, St Johnstone, Motherwell or Neil Doncaster doing the same.  If the board voted Newco FC into the league, the liquidation of Rangers would not be the end of the world; a football club would die but another could quickly emerge at the same location, selling tickets to the same people.

Opening positions on what sporting cost Newco FC should face for league entry were taken months ago when it was reported that Rangers would fight “tooth and nail” against a 25 point penalty on a Newco.  A 25 point penalty on the phoenix of a failed club after 12 seasons of financial benefit would be an insufferable insult.  This amounts to little more than a the loss of a single league title.  12 seasons of benefit should result in a 12 seasons of penury at the insolvency-event rate of 10 points per season.  Small cost for the enormous gift of a league place and a huge football franchise.  The SPL must also strike from the record any financially doped titles won by clubs still in existence or not.

Can you imagine if Peter Lawwell said, “It wouldn’t be the end of the world if Celtic PLC didn’t survive”!  There would be an impromptu media village outside Celtic Park that would rival the Obama inauguration in size.  Huge story sitting on a plate just waiting to be written up.  Or not.

“Better to resign with honour and keep our dignity rather than take part in a corrupt league! ”

Again, I understand your point but isn’t that cutting our nose off to spite our face. Some would say we’ve always been playing in a corrupt league. Are you saying it’s the scale of the corruptness that should cause us to resign or the principle behind it?

We’d keep our dignity but eventually could lose our stadium, our existence…Anyway, hasn’t dignity lost its shine in Scottish football now? 0-:)

I take your point and agree with it up to a point.

Equality is what we want, the black people of the world didn’t sit back and take it, they fought for equal rights, they are still fighting but they fought, we have to stand up and fight.

If it means we die in scotland so be it, I would rather our club died than accepting being second class anymore.

Everything has to die at some point.

The Irish would accept us with open arms, if we have to, that’s where I would go, and in a few years we would be back at the top table again, anything is better than accepting what is happening in scotland.

I was told last week prior to the derby that all Hun regalia which adorns the walls will be taken down for our visit

Also that the Hun game will NOT be shown in the club to avoid any potential trouble

  5. On the Mo Bangura discussion.

I have had a bit of a running verbal joust with some folks around me in the Nth Stand with regards to him.Since day one and seeing that he has the first touch of an effeminate tv make up man I told those around that he would not make it.I was of course slaughtered for this for not giving him a chance, note that these are the same guys who boo big Sammy as he warms up and thought D Murphy was a good player.I’m not making any claims to be a star finder but its pretty obvious that if a player, any player does not have the basics he is not good enough for Celtic whether Irish.African or Brazillian.

Mo Bangura is Marc Fortune without the pace, like most African born players in our price range he will score goals at lower levels but as soon as he goes up to the higher levels he will score 3/4 stunning goals a season but apart from that he will demonstrate a basic inability to pass or control the ball.I would be delighted to be proven wrong but I can’t see it.

The Timmy7_noted rule for African born players is as follows:

Only the very best can be strikers, creative players or wingers.

Most are very good in defence, full back or even centre mid since they generally have some passion and power about their game but for the most part only the very best have the creative qualities to play further forward.

Its just the rules.Celtic cannot afford the best African players only defenders or centre mids we should learn that lesson.

    Tin hat firmly on.

  6. Interesting article Paul as always…

IF they lose the big tax case the Newco WILL be deducted the minimum penalty.

    ……..

If the huns are allowed straight back (if they go bye bye) into the SPL then Scottish football is finished! We should have no part of it. Football in this country has always been corrupt, but this would be on a whole new level, it would say to the world we don’t give a toss about fairplay, as long as they are in the top league. The huns would be untouchable and will have been given complete carte blanche to do whatever they desire and eff everyone else. A bit like now, but with no doubity, no secret handshakes, no need to even try and be fair. We would NEVER win another title as the cheating would be completely unchecked and boasted about!

  8. Soz,

Again, it’s not really in our power though is it? We would have to be invited. I wouldn’t bet on the lower leagues wanting us nor would I bet on a full Celtic Park to see us play Accrington Stanley (no particular beef with Accrington….or Stanley)

Sorry pal have to disagree! With those Huns nothing, would love nothing more for them to burn and die as a club. If they are allowed back in then we must leave the SPL, even at the cost of joining a low English league

  13. In light of what we are reading today it would appear that the end is finaslly nigh for Rangers. It’s been a long time coming but even the MBB is admitting what we all already worked out.

With the advent of the internet it has become easier to document findings and get them to an audience. The LL have ignored all the facts even though a kid could source them very easilly. It’s clear that they have taken the route of not putting it in the public domain to protect Rangers assests (players). The clamour to put an inflated price on Jellylegs hasn’t worked. The most telling statement of the last few days was Hodgson stating that Rangers have severe financial issues and everyone in football circles knows it. Nobody will pay the inflated price that Rangers are pushing for through the press. Jellylegs is really the last throw of the dice to get decent cash and MBB knows the game is almost up.

In reading all this I thank god that Fergus McCann was the man who saved the Hoops. He came in with a plan. He delivered what he promised and took what he said he would.

He also kicked some butt (his words) on the way. He took on the SFA and won. He took on the Bosman ruling and would have won if the SFA had backed him. He built a stadium and also left the club in such a solvent position that we would never be at risk again. I think that he should be lauded as much as any other figure in Celtic’s history. He warned the club not to bring Kenny in. Those words weren’t heeded by McDonanld and he brought him in anyway – Big mistake. He made some mistakes but nowhere near worthy of mention when you consider what he got right. He didn’t flannel the support and always had the clubs interests at heart.

I always remember his appointment of TB who himself admitted was probably a bit too young for the post but couldn’t refuse it. He wanted the club to be contenders which we were.

In that respect we are a relatively new club. We had to be redesigned from top to bottom and only now are we reaping the benefits after a few daft mistakes (Mogga, Barnes & Kenny).

Lenny is taking the club in the right direction and although it has been frustrating at times so are the men in the boardroom. There is no room for gambling or taking chances. It’s a business and it’s being well run.

Let’s look at the charlatan across the city.

    He has no plan.

    The club have few assets.

    They have massive debts.

    They have been trading illegally.

    They have no white knight.

They do not have fans who will invest.

    They have no credit rating.

Their reputation in football and trading is in tatters.

Even if they do survive their infrustructure will need to be ripped up and started again. If they start from stratch it will take years to fix and resurface to our level.

There is nothing for Celtic to worry about we will go from strength to strength. Just pause and think where we would be without Fergus. Doesn’t bear thinking about. These tough times reflect that more so than ever.

The bunnet should be allowed to share in the flag unveiling and get the cheers he deserved when we stopped the ten.

I agree with cadizzy that the lower leagues in england is not the answer.

Ireland for me, the Irish league is a better standard than the spl imo, and Celtic there would boost the game there 100 fold, sponsers would get involved, TV deals would ensue, the crowds would come back.

    2. It was always my intention that on my return this time to Scotland, never more to roam, I would finally treat myself to a Celtic season ticket book

A long time ambition of mine.

I could now be within weeks of that move back to Scotland materialising.

If THE HUN get to carry on in the SPL and lauded for their evading taxes and cheating I’ll never set foot in Celtic Park again. What would be the point?

Scottish football is a farce. My old man was telling that since I was 15.

Shoot the pox ridden thing in the head and put us all out it’s misery.

O.K., we move up from Div2, Div1 no problem but the Championship is a difficult league to get out of.

    Lots of hard, competitive games.

No European money to spice up the ole warchest.

While I can see the attraction of playing in England it’s goin gto involve a tremendous amount of difficulty, on and off the park.

In the meantime we could do worse than focussing on the matter in hand, ie winning the league we’re currently playing in.

I know I’m sounding like a broken record but we have to be invited into another league and it would have to be sanctioned by UEFA possibly FIFA also. I am not confident in either of those things currently.

The threat of resignation might be part of a “who blinks first” game leaving the SPL knowing that they have to lose one of their two big clubs. Who do you think they’d choose? Rhetorical question obviously.
