Not the end of the world if Rangers don’t survive! Too true

1216

I caught an online synopsis of Rangers’ owner Craig Whyte’s recent meeting with a group of the club’s fans last night.  The group report that Whyte hopes, “’Rangers Football Club Plc’ could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t.”

We can all agree, it sure wouldn’t be the end of the world if that particular entity didn’t survive, although I suspect Mr Whyte is alluding to the possibility of a new club emerging.  Celtic Quick News first raised the liquidation scenario back in October and explained a prepack route for Rangers Newco FC.  If a football company goes into liquidation a secured creditor, in Rangers case this would be Craig Whyte, can retain control of key assets, such as the stadium, but would not own a football club which was part of any league structure.

In Scotland any Newco FC would have to apply for membership of the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League.  A simple majority of the SPL board (three votes required) would be enough to vote a club into the SPL.  The board currently has representatives from Celtic, Dundee United, Motherwell and St Johnstone, as well as SPL chief exec, Neil Doncaster.  It is chaired by Ralph Topping, who only votes in the event of a stalemate.

If Rangers lose their tribunal against Her Majesty’s tax authorities (think of her underequipped soldiers), Celtic will not be the only club who will consider the commercial and competitive disadvantage they suffered while paying their taxes for the last 12 years, but they may be one of the few clubs that would survive without the sponsorship and TV income dependent on a club with the Rangers brand participating in the league.  Celtic would vote against allowing Rangers into the league but I can see zero chance of Dundee United, St Johnstone, Motherwell or Neil Doncaster doing the same.  If the board voted Newco FC into the league, the liquidation of Rangers would not be the end of the world; a football club would die but another could quickly emerge at the same location, selling tickets to the same people.

Opening positions on what sporting cost Newco FC should face for league entry were taken months ago when it was reported that Rangers would fight “tooth and nail” against a 25 point penalty on a Newco.  A 25 point penalty on the phoenix of a failed club after 12 seasons of financial benefit would be an insufferable insult.  This amounts to little more than a the loss of a single league title.  12 seasons of benefit should result in a 12 seasons of penury at the insolvency-event rate of 10 points per season.  Small cost for the enormous gift of a league place and a huge football franchise.  The SPL must also strike from the record any financially doped titles won by clubs still in existence or not.

Can you imagine if Peter Lawwell said, “It wouldn’t be the end of the world if Celtic PLC didn’t survive”!  There would be an impromptu media village outside Celtic Park that would rival the Obama inauguration in size.  Huge story sitting on a plate just waiting to be written up.  Or not.

I said to my family when we were watchin the game that he intended to do Kayal big time. Out and out thug!!

  2. James F – regarding ‘no more mr nice guy McCoist’ – I think that mask slipped a long long time ago for most of us but you still hear the odd uniformed part time CEltic supporters saying ‘he’s no the worst’.

He played in a team of thugs, was coached by a management team of thugs and learned his managerial trade under a thug. Apples don’t fall far from the tree. He was a diving cheat himself and played under a coaching team that encouraged diving cheats and then assisted a manager whose main tactic was to ‘win’ free kicks – a tactic Ally himself openly admitted to while still a number 2 (I believe that despite being No 1 now he is still a big fat number 2 as well!) – in other words to dive and cheat to gain tactical and territorial advantage.

I pray to God we never ever have a manager who encourages thuggery and cheating. Win fair or don’t win at all in my opinion.

Hopefully we will secure the players to really press home our current advantage and win the league before they can cheat their way out of paying their bills.

And can someone please explain how it is possible that any business or organisation can end up owing the tax man the guts of £50 Million and not have to pay it back? Now, I understand the concept of the prepacked administration, I understand Whytes position as preferred creditor, BUT what I cannot understand is how such a transparent ruse is LEGAL. If they continue as NEWCO FC,playing at Ibrox, same supporters, same colours, virtually the same name and they can obviously be run as a pretty healthy going concern once the wages are cut and so on why on earth would HMRC not be able to tax them at a higher rate until all of the tax was paid back, say over the next ten years.

I hear it all the time, bhoys on here threatening to give up on football if the huns get this or the authorities dont do that.

Rankers/newcheats, fully supported by the scottish establishment, will continue to cheat, and we, as celtic supporters, will continue to support our team. We have no choice but to do this in scotland as there doesnt appear that there is anywhere else for us to go.

If we could, I would vote for starting at the bottom of the greasy oil north east yorkshire shamateur league if it meant we could be in the EPL within 10 years.

Thanks for that, but my point is they would need to change the rules to allow Newco in but denying the winners of the Div 1 automatic entry that will mean consultation and agreement with SFL/SFA and potential compensation from SPL.

If this did not happen then winner of Div 1 could take legal action very protracted and impossible during the summer and does the voting mechanism not go in our favour with no RFC if it has to go to full SPL Board

Don’t often post on CQN these days but this issue is one that really gets me.

What happens is Paul’s scenario comes to pass, its obvious, Hearts then Aberdeen then Dundee Utd etc. will do exactly the same thing the next day, our game will be the laughing stock (it is already if we are honest). What about UEFA sporting integrity then? will Platini and co turn a blind eye or do something? What about Celtics strategy of running the club in a business-like manner, will we just forget about that and borrow borrow going forward?

It’s not acceptable to me, as a shareholder and a supporter, for Celtic to simply vote against them, knowing full well the vote counts for nothing. It will only be acceptable to me if Celtic take it the full way, i.e. demand UEFA intervention and make it a resignation issue. If the league can’t survive without the brand that is Rangers to attract TV money, then it certainly can’t survive without the brand that is Celtic, it goes both ways.

If our board capitulate on this, then it’s the end of the line for me, I will never be back, what’s the point.

  15. Paul,

    Thanks for the clarification.

If only the SPL Board would decide on any Newco application to join the SPL, then I think it is likely to happen.

“The board currently has representatives from Celtic, Dundee United, Motherwell and St Johnstone, as well as SPL chief exec, Neil Doncaster. It is chaired by Ralph Topping, who only votes in the event of a stalemate.”

Assuming a majority decision of the five voting members is sufficient, we would need two of the other four to vote with us to keep the Newco out. I can’t see that happening.

  16. I believe that while outwardly celtic plc will object to newco getting straight back in, privately they will be pleased.

  20. As I’m too lazy to read back, has anybody commented on Rangers giving away tickets to their home game against Aberdeen if you buy a top for £20 and get some letters on it. Desperate times my friends, desperate times. They’ll be pulling less than 30k by the end of the season.

Pardon my maths but if we have a vote involving four clubs and the CE – i.e., five votes – in what circumstances does the chair have a casting vote in event of stalemate?

  22. EXILED TIM, aye.

Sandman, what I can tell you is that Rangers are not working to any plan agreed by the other clubs. They are out on their own and if/once they step over the cliff anything can happen. There are other agencies who could spike things, including HMRC. Ignore comments that politicians prevented HMRC from doing a deal with Rangers but the authorities will be plenty to do in the event.

    merseycelt, cheers.

St.John.Doyle, winners of the First Division would be promoted at the expense of the relegated team. If Rangers were relegated, so be it. If not, Newco would take the place of Rangers.

Allyhuntersgloves, you can forget notions of our board capitulating, what’s more important is getting the issue raised with Uefa before the matter comes to a head.

Uefa’s scrutiny of any decision would be more valuable than anything local attention could do.

Gordon_J, aye. More complicated is the fact that the rest are all dependent on support from the same bank. They would need to submit new business plans w/o TV and sponsor income to keep their facilities – which would be rejected.

We will be presented with a fait-a-compli.

  24. Gordon_J, it’s worth adding that the bank in question is the same one who passed on control of Rangers to Craig Whyte. Hmmm
