Not the end of the world if Rangers don’t survive! Too true

1216

I caught an online synopsis of Rangers’ owner Craig Whyte’s recent meeting with a group of the club’s fans last night.  The group report that Whyte hopes, “’Rangers Football Club Plc’ could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t.”

We can all agree, it sure wouldn’t be the end of the world if that particular entity didn’t survive, although I suspect Mr Whyte is alluding to the possibility of a new club emerging.  Celtic Quick News first raised the liquidation scenario back in October and explained a prepack route for Rangers Newco FC.  If a football company goes into liquidation a secured creditor, in Rangers case this would be Craig Whyte, can retain control of key assets, such as the stadium, but would not own a football club which was part of any league structure.

In Scotland any Newco FC would have to apply for membership of the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League.  A simple majority of the SPL board (three votes required) would be enough to vote a club into the SPL.  The board currently has representatives from Celtic, Dundee United, Motherwell and St Johnstone, as well as SPL chief exec, Neil Doncaster.  It is chaired by Ralph Topping, who only votes in the event of a stalemate.

If Rangers lose their tribunal against Her Majesty’s tax authorities (think of her underequipped soldiers), Celtic will not be the only club who will consider the commercial and competitive disadvantage they suffered while paying their taxes for the last 12 years, but they may be one of the few clubs that would survive without the sponsorship and TV income dependent on a club with the Rangers brand participating in the league.  Celtic would vote against allowing Rangers into the league but I can see zero chance of Dundee United, St Johnstone, Motherwell or Neil Doncaster doing the same.  If the board voted Newco FC into the league, the liquidation of Rangers would not be the end of the world; a football club would die but another could quickly emerge at the same location, selling tickets to the same people.

Opening positions on what sporting cost Newco FC should face for league entry were taken months ago when it was reported that Rangers would fight “tooth and nail” against a 25 point penalty on a Newco.  A 25 point penalty on the phoenix of a failed club after 12 seasons of financial benefit would be an insufferable insult.  This amounts to little more than a the loss of a single league title.  12 seasons of benefit should result in a 12 seasons of penury at the insolvency-event rate of 10 points per season.  Small cost for the enormous gift of a league place and a huge football franchise.  The SPL must also strike from the record any financially doped titles won by clubs still in existence or not.

Can you imagine if Peter Lawwell said, “It wouldn’t be the end of the world if Celtic PLC didn’t survive”!  There would be an impromptu media village outside Celtic Park that would rival the Obama inauguration in size.  Huge story sitting on a plate just waiting to be written up.  Or not.

If you’re going to use those tactics then it’s not a good idea to announce them in the press beforehand.

    Forewarned is forearmed.

  2. Worth a punt?

Wolves defender George Elokobi is attracting interest from a trio of Championship clubs according to reports.

The 25-year old Cameroonian has made just seven Premier League appearances under Mick McCarthy so far this season and is believed to be considering his future in order to play more regularly.

Second tier clubs Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace are all believed to be looking at Elokobi who can play anywhere across the back four although he is mainly used at left-back.

  3. A couple of questions about Turmoil FC.

Who gets to decide on the name of the newco ?

And can that be changed in the future ?

While I’m on this amusing subject, anyone got any ideas about who the new owners are

likely to be assuming that, by then, the MBB will be hiding out Bin Laden style but

hopefully, for him, in a much more secure place.

I will answer it for you, if you were managing Peterhead this weekend, you would do exactly what Jim is doing.

I’m afraid i wouldn’t. That is from the Andy Roxburgh/Craig Brown/Archie Knox school of coaching

Is it any wonder Scotland hasn’t qualified for a major tourney in 14 odd years?

  7. How might a mid table SPL club view the potential application of Huns (2012) to replace the defunct Huns (1873)?

Let’s assume that economic self interest would come before any arguments about sporting fairness. After all, why take a principled stand that might cost your club money? “How does this affect our club?” is the key question.

Without Rangers there would be less TV money available. There would be one or two less home games with big crowds. That’s a fair reduction in income.

There is a chance to finish higher in the league and earn more prize money. A higher probability of winning one of the European places available to Scotland. These are potential additions to current income.

So it looks to me like a definite loss in income against the potential for some gains. And therefore a vote in favour of Huns (2012).

  8. The Celtic team were unlucky. Lazio had some nasty characters in their team, Foul, foul, foul…

Mo Bangura has more talent than Gerry Butler – both acting and footballing. FACT!

I expect him to bounce back from this setback a show himself to be the EPL star he knows he can be.

Ernielynch, lets be honest, you don’t need to be a master tactician to work out what Peterhead will do, its pretty obvious to everyone. This conversation started because I posted what a big Tim Jim McInally is, it seems a few think that means he should just lie down to Celtic or at least send his boys out to play a training game. If you speak to Jim he will tell you about how much he learned being part of Martin O’Niells management team at Celtic, Now what would MON do if he was managing Peterhead, let me think……………………….

    Agreed.

I’m a shareholder and have held a season ticket for the last sixteen seasons. The “fait-a-compli” as Paul67 puts it will have me turning my back on Scottish Football for good.

As you say, whats the point!

    good stuff.

Bit behind the curve. What’s the damage to Kayal. Fingers crossed for the lad.

I thought Kayal was taking a risk, but got there first. McCulloch has his foot down and his lead foot is not the issue, it’s whether his following foot deliberately caught Kayal or accidently. That’s where the damage was done. To be honest, I don’t know how anyone could tell. At full speed it’s hard to even see.

Thank you very much mr zybzsek and do you know what? What you say is backed up by fifas laws of the game.

Perhaps Willie gollum was one of the refs that failed their knowledge of the game test. Perhaps serious foul play and the use of excessive force were a few of the questions he answered incorrectly.

  15. My last word on your awful referees.

When Legia play against Lech or Wisla, it’s the referee who is responsible how the game looks like.

It’s his job to talk to the captains before the game and explain what is the level of the play he accepts or not. He tells the captains for what he is going to give yellow cards and red cards.

It usually takes fifteen minuts for both teams to see what is the level of play acceptable for the referee. If he does not react on wrong tackles, unsporting behaviour as it was in the game Celtic v. Rangers you can see consequences like that.

Awful referees, guilty of awful injuries.

  16. Speaking to some of the guys at work who live in Peterhead. Apparently Celtic are bringing their own security team with them? The Bluetoon is not Celtic friendly. If you are going be careful guys.

copied below an e mail from one of my colleagues who lives in Peterhead

“I can see it now all the young Bloo noses who normally are at PFC to watch the Rangers games are watching the game at 12:30 kick off and Rangers win !!! then by the end of the rangers game the Celtic buses arrive at PFC directly outside the bar , whoooooooo, a CAULDRON OF HATE

  17. Seeing the goalscorer today, remember when the huns were referred to as the ‘darnel’ on this blog.

funny how that term just vanished.

  18. Allyhuntersgloves on

Ten men, I thought you said you wee going to answer it?

You keep telling me what you wouldnt do,

Tell us please what would you do if you were managing Peterhead this weekend? what would your tactics be to beat Celtic?

  19. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

It’s now that Celtic need to insist on using foreign refs for their game as Scottish referees failure to punish serious foul play is endangering the safety of our players. In fact it has already ended the season of kayal.

  20. The statment from the RSA posted on here last night was only part of the statement

Further down the letter was a snippet about next years season tickets

    Key points are –

Season ticket renewals to commence earlier than normal with incentives to pay by the deadline.

The four-payment instalment option will be paid up before the season starts – there were a number of people renewing then defaulting after the first payment.

A couple of questions about Turmoil FC.

‘Who gets to decide on the name of the newco ?’

The shareholders of the newco though from memory there is some statutory provision preventing a newco using a similar name to the oldo co where the new directors were directors of the oldo and wrongful trading was involved. The liquidator (as the owner of the intellectual property rights of the oldco) might also have some right to prevent the newco passing itself of as the old co by using a similar name.

‘And can that be changed in the future ?’

    Yes.

‘While I’m on this amusing subject, anyone got any ideas about who the new owners are

    likely to be’

I’ve a hunch Jim McColl the guy who recently sold his interest in Clyde Blowers and a lifelong hun might be involved.

  22. While we all take great delight in the demise of the hun, the only team who will lose out through the debacle is Celtic.

If the hun are newcoed back into the spl, many thousands will walk away, hence a dramatic downsizing.

If the hun are newcoed, all they will lose is their tainted history, they will be debt free, and they will receive fresh investment allowing them to dominate scottish football for years to come.

If anyone thinks there will be a change of heart at the sfa, the referees they are in dire need of being locked up in a secure hospital.

Resign Celtic, it’s the only solution

Bhoywithseethrou Like you I am a long term season ticket holder into my 28th season. I took part in 2 share issues and I support Celtic home and as many aways as I can get to, I travelled Europe supporting my team, and never at any time during my time, including their 9 in a row when I honestly thought we would never win the league again, did I ever think about not going. But this time and on this issue, its binary. I’m sure a lot of people wont care if a few thousand of us don’t go, but I will care it will break my heart but why would you continue if the league was compromised?

Good points made but let it go. Jim McInally will have been miss-quoted or speaking tongue in cheek.

Either way it doesn’t matter. Celtic know how to mix it when required.

Apparantly the Peterhead clubhouse is really the local huns supporters club which is a cause of some irritation amongst other clubs in the division. In effect the club is financially supported by the local huns.

If Bangura goes in this window, either on loan or permanently, I would trust the argument over whether or not he was Lenny’s preferred option will be at an end.

No-one will ever convince me this is the guy the manager wanted.

The guy he did want is not out of our reach. There will come a time when someone will need to answer for that decision.

This fiasco shows the dangers in letting anyone other than those in the football department have a voice in who we sign.

the football department should have a budget for transfers and wages, it should be entirely up to them how it is spent. Nobody else, CEO or DD or Chairman, should have ANY say in who we sign as long as we are sticking to budget

    A story from Today’s Scottish Legal News………..

“Staff at a Scottish charity shop have been left stunned after thieves hoofed it with a 7ft costume of a goat.

The outfit for Oxfam’s official mascot, Archie the Goat, was pinched from outside one of their Glasgow stores after touring Britain unscathed, The Sun has reported.

Liz Sim, manager of the Oxfam store in Clarkston, said: “We’re all gutted.”

Archie, who was last seen on December 29, was due to return to England after his visit north of the border.

Brenda Walton, Oxfam’s west of Scotland boss, added: “He’s 7ft tall so somebody must have seen him.”

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: “We are studying CCTV.” ”
