Not time for Griffiths to move

873

The general reaction to reports that a £1m bid has been received for Leigh Griffiths is that the figure undervalues the player.  Early in the season the story was different.  Leigh, who joined in January last year, was behind new arrivals John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic.  His perceived value was close to zero, alongside most players sitting on the bench or in the stand.

We were panicked on 31 August last year.  Having signed Amido Balde and Teemu Pucki a year earlier we were desperately short of a striker, the arrival of Scepovic, then Guidetti was cause for celebration.  Neither brought much to the club, we would have been better, with more money available for the next window, if we’d prioritised Leigh and given chances to a youth player.

If Celtic choose to sell Leigh this summer, it will not be for £1m.  He’s worth much more than that, probably more than Leeds United can afford.  He’s under contract, first choice and scoring goals.  But Celtic will also put a great deal of effort into recruiting a striker in the coming weeks.

There are no guarantees Leigh will get an extended run in the team next season.  Celtic should sell players at peak value, when they have reached the point they are no longer developing, before they become an overhang on resources.  Leigh is probably at peak value, and unlikely to further develop, but he’s no overhang.  That scenario won’t happen until a couple of new pretenders have proven they are better fits than Balde, Pukki, Scepovic and Guidetti.

Keep an eye on Frank McGarvey’s 1985 Scottish Cup Final shirt, which is being auctioned to benefit Maryhill Food Bank.  It closes just before 8pm tonight.

I was thinking about the T McL comment about why do a large proportion of Celtic supporters have an extreme interest in “who we selling?” Instead of “who we buying?”.

My first theory is that it’s like watching Who wants to be a millionaire.

Celtic sell, the team never improves the overall state is one of decline. No OF on the horizon, so why?

I suspect a large proportion of us Tims wish the board financial remuneration as some sort of vicarious victory over “them” while the same wonderful Tims contribute their tins of peas and beans to the growing Scottish food banks.

  3. Is the 1st huns game v Hibs at ibrokes?

If so, is this because in the likelihood of the huns not getting the right result and, the huns support will do what they usually do when they don’t get what they want ie: riot in Edinburgh but, Sevco will not be held responsible because the incidents that ‘will’ happen, won’t happen at ibrokes?

The draw for the play off fixtures was always known in advance and the 2nd leg is always at the home of the team who finished higher in the table. So 2nd leg is at Easter Road and the 2nd leg of the eventual final will be at Fir Park.

  7. jg,

Without European support the US would shrivel. Europe legitimises the US claim to being the only superpower, China, Russia and India are forming trade agreements that threaten the US economic domination the US is trying to destabilise that by sabre rattling in Europe and stirring up the Middle East to ensure there will always be enemies to keep at bay.

  11. Backing him to the hilt?

He backed him that much that, he denied our new manager the use of Celtic’s biggest advantage in terms of qualifying for the CL group stages ie: the backing of a packed Celtic Park as, the board had already ‘prostituted’ the stadium that the Celtic fans(me as well) paid for and, built by our over-subscribed share issue to help out Fergus.

Regarding your posts from the night. I promiesed to myself I won’t be touching your posts.

You again attacking me without any reason. I guess it has to do with that what happened one or two years ago and your challange from the past. I said on Saturday the best for both of us is scroll past each other posts. Now I say my advise was much more profitable for you that it was for me.

  17. Signed HT’s FAC-petition last week.

    Am no sure about that?

Celtic supporters are doing today what, the huns players did during the war’s….sitting behind a desk, instead of doing what the Celtic players and, fans did during the war’s ie:

get stuck right in aboot it.

Ah know that point will bring folk to ask – “well, what else can we do?”

Signing petitions is being done from a point of apathy.

Four groups are involved in all this police-harassment stuff.

    1. SNP

    2. Police Scotland

    3. SFA

    4. Celtic FC

Celtic FC, did the dirty on the supporters, just like they turned turtle at the Shame-Game Govt-Summit…attending like meek little lambs.

Celtic fans should not have to fight this battle.

Celtic’s board should have taken the bull by the horns and, got a fleet of the best legal-eagles that money could buy to, get to the bottom of this mess.

But, that would be a contradiction as…Celtic FC’s fingerprints are all over the creation of this draconian bill.

The Celtic board are sitting this one out…blending in with the wall-paper…is their game.

The petition pedlars should take a step back and, do a Charlie Nicholas…just sitting here thinking…the board broke it so…they should fix it.

Any reasonable board would put their hands up and admit to a mistake and, remedy the situation, eh?

But, only reasonable folk will do, reasonable things, eh?

Celtic fans petition pedlars are, aiming their guns at the wrong target.

Celtic supporters…will…get this FAC-bill, done away with but, will the Celtic board not get in touch behind the scenes and meet the costs if it has to go to court?

Remember…this is a Celtic board that you have all made into millionaires…hosting a clutch of billionaires as well btw…so, maybe Celtic FC don’t want to be seen to be involved…that’s cool…Celtic fans anger and, frustration at this set of cicumstances must always be tempered by the knowledge that, the folk whom you have all made financially secure for the rest of their days….helped set this trap for you all…dont lose sight of that.
