Not time for Griffiths to move

873

The general reaction to reports that a £1m bid has been received for Leigh Griffiths is that the figure undervalues the player.  Early in the season the story was different.  Leigh, who joined in January last year, was behind new arrivals John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic.  His perceived value was close to zero, alongside most players sitting on the bench or in the stand.

We were panicked on 31 August last year.  Having signed Amido Balde and Teemu Pucki a year earlier we were desperately short of a striker, the arrival of Scepovic, then Guidetti was cause for celebration.  Neither brought much to the club, we would have been better, with more money available for the next window, if we’d prioritised Leigh and given chances to a youth player.

If Celtic choose to sell Leigh this summer, it will not be for £1m.  He’s worth much more than that, probably more than Leeds United can afford.  He’s under contract, first choice and scoring goals.  But Celtic will also put a great deal of effort into recruiting a striker in the coming weeks.

There are no guarantees Leigh will get an extended run in the team next season.  Celtic should sell players at peak value, when they have reached the point they are no longer developing, before they become an overhang on resources.  Leigh is probably at peak value, and unlikely to further develop, but he’s no overhang.  That scenario won’t happen until a couple of new pretenders have proven they are better fits than Balde, Pukki, Scepovic and Guidetti.

Keep an eye on Frank McGarvey’s 1985 Scottish Cup Final shirt, which is being auctioned to benefit Maryhill Food Bank.  It closes just before 8pm tonight.

Not being funny, but you take dissent on here far too seriously and your resultant ramblings are verging on paranoia.

I’m reading an article in TIME right now’Europe’s Crisis of Conscience’ about trafficking from Libya.

Most countries today probably wouldn’t sign up to the 1950 agreement which set up UNHCR. And I can understand that,if I’m honest.

219,000 people made the crossing from Libya to parts of Italy. These people are sufficiently desperate to escape war-zones and/or grinding poverty, religious, political or sexual persecution.

I don’t advocate mass migration-our countries clearly aren’t ready for the demographic change it would bring-but how do we turn round to someone and tell them

‘I was born lucky, you wurnae. Now eff off?’

You can’t. Stalin said that a death was a tragedy,a million deaths a statistic.

    The same applies.

Politics will attempt to prevent a million immigrants. But I personally could never tell one to his face that he had to go home,he had no right to a better life.

If you watched the Ronny lecture, he does fit the bill of a ‘typical’ Ronny player ie a (hopefully) good player but on the fringes or even not wanted at the team he’s at.

(Like Campbell O )I’m hopelessly conflicted.

I feel Celtic should never have participated in the summit on the”shame game” as we did not have a case to answer with regards to same. Ffs dragging us into it was an absolute joke and gave the “Summit” a credibility it didn’t deserve.

    However….

Neil should have given the Sleekit one a severe boot in the plums for his comments (away from the full glare of the Media (but in those days of an “old firm” ) that was probably well nigh impossible. Hey ho I would have given the fat bassa a boot in the plums anyway and tried to have the case arraigned before a Free Republic of Coatbridge jury much like an Edinburgh jury but swings the other way( if correctly packed).

For the avoidance of doubt even in the bad old days I would still have rejected the moniker “Old Firm” because …..it enabled those with a “mind” to do so (see what I did there) to tar us with the same brush as those dwelling on the dark side without having to resort to any sort of research or ” journalistic integrity ” before arriving at the predetermined conclusion that one ……was indeed as bad as the other. Without any evidence base whatsoever..

Cheers dude – interesting information. Jason had an excellent season with us and I’m a bit disappointed he won’t be there next year. Guess footballers need to make hay while the sun shines and all. I had hoped we’d make a bid for him – but perhaps Ronny’s already had that conversation and the kid isn’t interested.

  24. Celtic are considering a second double raid on Dundee United for teenager John Souttar and striker Nadir Ciftci.

The Tannadice club sparked a row with supporters when they sold star duo Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven to the Parkhead club on deadline day in January.

Jackie McNamara’s side have won just three of their 14 games since, and lost 3-0 at home to Ronny Deila’s side on Sunday.

Heavily linked with Ciftci in January, the Norwegian has also earmarked 18-year-old Souttar as potential cover for Scott Brown and Nir Bitton in a holding midfield role. The teenager has recently impressed in the middle of the pitch since switching from central defence.

Ciftci and Souttar are under contract until May next year and could go for a combined fee of £1.5million.
