Not time for Griffiths to move

873

The general reaction to reports that a £1m bid has been received for Leigh Griffiths is that the figure undervalues the player.  Early in the season the story was different.  Leigh, who joined in January last year, was behind new arrivals John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic.  His perceived value was close to zero, alongside most players sitting on the bench or in the stand.

We were panicked on 31 August last year.  Having signed Amido Balde and Teemu Pucki a year earlier we were desperately short of a striker, the arrival of Scepovic, then Guidetti was cause for celebration.  Neither brought much to the club, we would have been better, with more money available for the next window, if we’d prioritised Leigh and given chances to a youth player.

If Celtic choose to sell Leigh this summer, it will not be for £1m.  He’s worth much more than that, probably more than Leeds United can afford.  He’s under contract, first choice and scoring goals.  But Celtic will also put a great deal of effort into recruiting a striker in the coming weeks.

There are no guarantees Leigh will get an extended run in the team next season.  Celtic should sell players at peak value, when they have reached the point they are no longer developing, before they become an overhang on resources.  Leigh is probably at peak value, and unlikely to further develop, but he’s no overhang.  That scenario won’t happen until a couple of new pretenders have proven they are better fits than Balde, Pukki, Scepovic and Guidetti.

Keep an eye on Frank McGarvey’s 1985 Scottish Cup Final shirt, which is being auctioned to benefit Maryhill Food Bank.  It closes just before 8pm tonight.

Must admit I’ve not seen any cheating on behalf of the huns in the last few years.

Blinded by tears of laughter every time they’re on. One of my hun mates has never spoken to me since we watched them draw 0-0 wi Montrose two years ago.

    Like I care…

  2. at one point in 3rd division 11/15 matches the opposition had a player sent off

  3. Time to be ruthless on the strikers

Guidetti – first out the door.

    Pukki next

    Balde same

Stokes – sorry not good enough.

Scepovic – sorry unable to force a place on the bench so gone too.

Lee G- keep but as an impact player.

    Who should we sign?

Not Adam Rooney or moody from Dundee United.

We need someone to hold it up and header the ball.We also need an old head.

The players all depend on the ambition and the budget.

It is stick or twist time for peter lawwell.my money would be that we will stick and have this same debate next year.

Your last post is utter tripe, condescending, uneducated drivel.

UKIP and the SNP have nothing in common.

SNP = no Trident, no House of Lords etc

UKIP = Get UK out of Europe and end immigration

comparing the SNP to UKIP is like comparing us to SEVCO.

Not too sure I’d agree with that, Paul.

I had misgivings when we signed Leigh (more about his character than footballing ability) and again when Ronny came in and spoke about the style of play he wanted.

But Leigh has really progressed and can continue to do so.

I heard JC speaking about the work they were doing with him – improving his weaknesses like how he plays with his back to goal.

If he buckles down LG could be one of our great strikers.

  10. ‘Mon Arsenal.

Leave Manure in fourth, and give us them in the CL qualifiers.

We knocked them out on away goals the last time we played them. . . . Sortofa.

UKIP don’t want an end to immigration. They want controlled immigration. It may surprise some of you but some immigrants also want controls.

UKIP have too many loons though.

Leigh is probably at peak value,

With all due respect. What a load of rubbish he’s not even played a full season for us as No 1 striker. He’s far from at his peak the bhoy hasn’t even started yet.

My DUFC mates thought that GMS was brilliant on his day,but his goods days were too infrequent.

I suspect he will repeat that trend at Celtic.

  17. Ernie – you’re probably right and the SNP have had a lot more experience in both parliaments to draw on.

For me the next 12-18 months is what will strengthen them or start the slide. They need to start living up to all the things that made people vote for them in the last two parliamentary elections.

One example (and it’s one I’m sure I’ll return to) being the combination of lower class size promises and the lack of teaching resources due to Council tax freezes. That’s one thing I wouldn’t be unhappy about ending. Not when services are suffering.

  18. beatbhoy –

We can’t get Man U in the qualifiers. They go straight into play-off and if we get to play-off we will be in the Champions group and they will be in non-Champions group.

Fojut still shows a lot of the attributes which made him a signing target in the first place but……

He shows all the signs of a player with a bad cruciate injury.

He plays his best football in straight lines. He is good with headed clearances and in striding out with the ball.

Ask him to twist and turn and face a nippy attacker and you soon see him struggle

I would want an uninjured Fojut but not this one

The four paragraphs spent on the latest serving of succulent hunguffery is about 40 more than it deserves.

  28. Tom & Gerry

I kinda suspected that, but just enjoyed recalling how we beat them on ‘away goals’ in our head-to-head in the group back in 2006, the night WGS didn’t know we had qualified for the last 16!

  29. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

    Burgas- no.

The most successful part time team in Britain this season is Dumbarton.

  30. John Park, was brought to Celtic, 7-8 years ago, based on what he had allegedly achieved with Hibs and Motherwell on young players coming through to first team

How long before we should be seeing this success at Celtic ?

We have a bigger Youth set up budget, than over 75% of first teams in Scotland

John Park is also head of Scouting, where in my opinion we have wasted an absolute fortune in the past 7-8 years, yes we can quote Ki, Wanyama or VVD, I could name 10 failures for everyone of those

Therein Lays a major problem for Celtic, and is costing our club an absolute fortune

The story I heard 2 years ago ( and I will accept there is 2 sides to every story) Lenny contacted J Russell and ensured him we would be signing, Mr Park turned up with Amido Balde, who allegedly had greater potential, so we signed him and Russell went to Derby

Anyone watch Balde warming up ? Couldn’t trap a bag of sand as they would say, no foot movement, shocking decision by Celtic or John Park ? Allegedly

Now I have no idea if Danny Wilson will sign, what I would like to know, why after 7-8 years we have not yet developed our own Centre Half to come through our Youth Set up ?

Should we ditch the Youth Set Up, costing us over £3m per season, and just sign the best youth as they come through other teams set ups, and establish themselves in their first teams, or what is stopping our youth being developed ( I’ve no answer to that)
