Nothing gained from playing Kyogo and McGregor

447

Bayer Leverkusen manager, Gerardo Seoane, summed the game up, “We also made some mistakes, but we had [goalkeeper]Lukas Hradecky saving us, it was a sensational game from him.

“The victory was earned. Maybe the scoreline was a little bit too high, but we deserved to win.”

Celtic were back to their flowing best in the opening 25 minutes but confidence, composure and any chance of competing in the knockout stages of the Europa League evaporated when Leverkusen took the lead.  The home side regrouped at halftime and again took the game to the Germans, but the unfortunate loss of a penalty brought that resurgence to a juddering halt.

It is a worry that the heads go down when a goal is lost; the same happened a week ago at Livingston.  As well as everything else, a resilience gene is missing from this Celtic team.

We will know by Sunday evening the wisdom of playing Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor last night.  Nothing was gained from their appearance.  Kyogo was thrice through with Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky to beat but could not convert.  Still, his impact on Celtic remains transformational.

Leading up to his second great chance, he opened play up with a sublime touch that switched the ball to Liel Abada.  No striker in recent Celtic history could do things like that.  Jota continues to settle into his new surroundings.  Leverkusen defenders quickly learned to back off him and to send reinforcements when the ball went to Celtic’s left.  A front three of Jota, Kyogo and Abada has a great deal of promise.

Oh David, what happened?  Turnbull seemed caught in two minds, between clearing the ball out of his box and allowing it to run out of play.  Playground stuff that would have me overcome with paranoia if it happened in certain domains.  I don’t think I have seen as poor a goal against Celtic, Leverkusen must have wondered what happened as much as the rest of us.

From that moment, the collapse seemed inevitable.  Our full backs were well up field when 3 v 2 left Joe Hart exposed for the second; halftime could not come soon enough.  Hart played well throughout, without him, our season would look in far greater danger.

Expectations were so low I think we had all emotionally factored a result like that in.  Despite what in any language is a drubbing, we were able to create better chances (against a far better team) than we have in recent weeks.  With Kyogo and McGregor back, the worst of this slump will be behind us.  The return of Juranovic, Taylor, Forrest and Jullien will help, but central midfield will remain light until January.

The season could pivot one way or the other on Sunday, we will find out then if the corner has been turned.

If it was racist, why was only one black player booed?

A non story. Wish these guys would concentrate on the racism on their own doorsteps.

Why did Irish Catholic migrants integrate better in England than in Scotland?

Was it because those here refused to integrate in order to maintain their cultural roots and heritage?

    Or was there another reason?

    let me try,

it was not assimilation, ie Irish Catholics just giving up their beliefs and doing the normal things the populace did. For generations, they were the poorest of communites alongside every other migrants,

    it was

ACCEPTANCE of the general populace, or industry or instituations that the descendants of the genocide famine were valuable,

  7. The treatment of Jeremy Frimpong the other night was nothing short of despicable. Not to mention unacceptable and unforgiveable. Any and all Celtic supporters involved should hang their heads in shame but wont. No other Leverkusen player was abused in the same manner or to the same extent, but none shared two characteristics of Frimpong, that of being black and being a former Celtic player. One, who I stated at the time of his leaving, was the best young player in Scotland. And one whose departure was engineered, and was accompanied by a narrative that stated that Frimpong was failing to progress as a player, pushed for a move, and that we got good money for a failing project. “Asset management writ large”. This narrative was created by Peter Lawwell, supported by Neil Lennon and written on these very pages by our host Paul 67. All told a total and utter disgrace, and sadly bought hook line and sinker by some on here, many elsewhere and a license to abuse by the racists among our support. Our support, mark you, not those of others. None of this excuses the behaviour on view, and the only one coming out with any credit was the player himself in his overall performance and his post match comments, while Neil Lennon continues to go down in my estimation for his bitter reaction to them. All this poisoned what in fact was a magnificent battle between Jeremy and our own young on loan winger Jota, one worthy of the highest salute, not the base reaction on show at Celtic Park.

  8. I posted sometime ago a link to a study of the towns the irish arrived in, for me it was fascinating,

driven by the peaky blinders of all things,

in 1890 1 in 5 of the mainland britain households were irish.

    Excellent post!

Celtic support have changed – the assimilation influence maybe????????????????????

  11. Anyone who thinks Frimpong was booed the other night because he is black is an absoloute disgrace and never a Celtic supporter.

Frimpong was booed probably because he was a former player that recently backed NFL to still be in post of manager. He should keep his mouth shut. NFL in the end was a disgrace to our support and basically hung on as a get it right up you to the support.

Do I agree with booing ex players, not really, although I probably would boo Paul Lambert after what he said and his undying love for the DEED club, but there is no way Celtic fans booed wee Frimpers because he was black.

    To suggest that is shocking.

    Totally agree with that.

It wasn’t right what happened with Jeremy. I hope the young lad has every success in his career, especially as he played for us and Won things too.

He spoke well after the game about Celtic Park and being home.

Noone in my vicinity (401) was booing him, he left Celtic because the Board accepted an offer for him at the earliest opportunity. He’d be in my team all the time.

Theres something not right @ Celtic at the moment and it has nothing to do with Ange.

  16. SCULLYBHOY on 2ND OCTOBER 2021 8:21 PM

Manchester has three Irish clubs, Glasgow has none.

    Why is that?

  17. squire danaher on

    DAVID66 on 2ND OCTOBER 2021 8:52 PM

Think a more likely trigger for the booing of Frimpong was him having been badmouthed in the lead up to the game by his former manager and the clowns among our support taking their cue from that.

Ironic given that Celtic couldn’t sell him quick enough when £14m was mentioned and that sum paid for Mr Bankier’s “extensive squad rebuild”.

  18. scullybhoy

Assimilated or no, there is simply no excuse for abusing a young black former Celtic player on his return to Glasgow. Others will try to rationalise it, justify it, and ultimately excuse it, but the fact is no bona fide Celtic supporter, from any background, would ever actually do it.

I suspect Henke was booed by some because they feared what he might do to us with a football , by others out of a misplaced sense of betrayal. I think the latter reason might apply to the Frimpong booing , a failure by some to grasp that football is a business for clubs and a career path for players .

  22. Ange – Keep going and getting into the heads of the Players at your disposal.
