Nothing to lose rubbish, we have everything to lose

318

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Nothing to lose’ lobby, who seem to think underdogs can play free from the burden of having to win.  Let me remind you where this Celtic team have come from…..

Celtic came through two qualifying rounds to reach the Champions League group stage, as bottom seed.  The collected 10 points in six incredibly tight games to finish above Benfica and Spartak Moscow to reach the knock out stage, losing only twice.

The margin between success (first or second place) and failure (bottom) was incredibly tight.  We are now 10 games into our European campaign and in the knock out stage for the first time in five years.  For Celtic, these opportunities are few and far between.

The team with nothing to lose is Juventus.  They are Italian champions and will be so again this year.  Their major competitors, Inter and Milan, occupy fourth and fifth place in the league respectively.  Napoli are the only team within 9 points of the top and they only won the league when Diego was strutting his stuff.

Juventus will be in the Champions League group stage next season and will be seeded to qualify for the knock out stage.  It could easily be the quarter finals before they face another tier-one side.  In other words, if Juve lost this tie, there will soon be another chance.

No one in the Celtic team knows if they will have another opportunity to reach deep inside the Champions League.

Nothing to lose?  For Forster, Matthews, Hooper, Lustig, Samaras, Commons, Wanyama and Mulgew, this is the greatest chance of their professional lives.  Win it and they become celebrated across Europe.  They before more valuable professionals, likely to earn bigger contracts in the future.  They have everything to lose.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I’ll see you there.

  5. Afternoon everyone. Looking for a little help please.

Will be at CP tomorrow courtesy of Thos. Cook via Glasgow airport and hire car. Doc is Neil Lennon advised me on a parking spot driving from the South which I used before but I’m now wondering as time will be tight on my flight arrival if I would be better to find somewhere on the North and walk as it might be better for getting away after the match. I’ll be coming off Junction 14 on the M8 heading down towards Alexandra Parade Station on B763. Anyone recommend a spot?

    Re parking.

If I was coming from the airport, I would come off the M8 and go onto the M74.

Then come off at Polmadie and follow the new East End Regen road which will take you right up to CP.

There are plenty of side roads as you get nearer the Stadium.

Going through the city centre and coming off at junction 14 seems a bit long winded and will be very busy.

No matter which way you chose, it’ll be hectic.

  22. Wee bit of advice and help, lhads and lhassies, if anyone can provide it. I have been on the UEFA site and can’t get through to order tickets as there seems to be a problem with my email address. I have checked it and it is correct. I have also tried phoning them but a disembodied voice informed that I have to go online to book. Catch24….

By the way, Paul67, I am one of those who ascribe to the nothing to lose notion. My reason is that in, e.g the games some of us were discussing on here last night against the likes of Inter when Dixie missed the penalty and against AC, when big Billy blundered, we were the better team. WE WERE EXPECTED TO WIN. Not so tomorrow night. In the Nou Camp when we lost I was gutted but very proud, because we were so unlucky and had given our all. If the team does the same tomorrow night and gets beat, I will still be proud. Everything from now on this season is a bonus.

The books are looking healthy, How best to convert this into on field success? Simples, more of the same!

CL progress is of course the Key. I wonder how the first six months would be looking without CL money and how do we use this years success to ensure qualification in coming seasons.

Chucky is going around the world with a begging bowl, I don’t think that is a financial strategy really, it’s more of “Gonnay.” (Gonnay gies a pound furra cup of tea) Aye, that’s Charles green for ye, a pavement pirate with a cheap suit and a bigger begging bowl to fill.

The general trend for our income has been in decline for quite sometime now, it will be good to reverse that trend.
