Celtic started their Europea League campaign with a draw in an excellent game of football in Belgrade against Red Star. Despite Celtic controlling most of the possession during the first 45 minutes, it was the hosts who created the best chances – until added time before the break. Cameron Carter-Vickers broke free from his marker to get on the end of a Benjamin Nygren cross but could not turn his effort on target from 6 yards.
That chance seemed to ignite Celtic as they rolled over Red Star from the opening moment of the second half. An excellent move down the left saw Kieran Tierney cut the ball deep into the box for Nygren, but his shot went too close to the keeper. Moments later Kelechi Iheanacho must have thought he had opened the scoring with a close-range shot which again found the keeper.
The opener arrived on 55 minutes. Nygren collected the ball 45 yards from goal on the wing. He drove to the edge of the box, passed a defender with a step-over, before pinging a pass to Iheanacho. It was the best football played all night and a tier one assist. This is a player. Kelechi took a touch before despatching a left foot shot high into the net. Keeper Matheus got a hand to it but could not keep it out.
The lead was no more than Celtic deserved. Red Star rallied and equalised from a corner 10 minutes later, where they got the first three touches on the cross (sigh), culminating in Arnautovic knocking the ball home from 3 yards.
Celtic visibly tired as the game concluded and dropped deep to hold the line in the closing 10 minutes. Reo Hatate came in for some soft criticism on TV during the game, but it was when he wilted that Celtic found it difficult to build play. Still, Iheanacho had the best chance to win the game when again clean through, but his chip caught the keeper’s face. Whatever happened to him in Middlesborough, is no longer relevant.
In the old home and away double header days, we would have been happy with this result as Red Star looked like a team we would take at home. The manager seemed irked when questioned post-match about the search for an away win in Europe. It will be four years since our last non-qualification win on the road by the time we next play away. These games are significantly more taxing than anything we face domestically (which is a big part of the problem). Still, hope in our hearts, and all that? Belgrade is not Bergamo, no matter how long the tunnel.

Pub quiz question – last european game, not involving a Scottish team, where both captains were Scottish
Answer- Villa – Bologna
Not that we can talk but Racing Genk is the second lowest seeded team in the Europa League.
Chairboy….sorry for your loss
Chairboy……did you watch the team that you wanted to qualify for the CL on TNT sports or the way that you watch Celtic….on an illegal stream?
Genuinely curious.
Get it up every hun ratbag that reads this.
Yeeeeeehaaaa
Deep joy to look at the coupons of that scum support and the pundits.
Fair cheers me up so it dis.
Rangers improve on domestic league performance by securing 6th from bottom position.
Bring back Ned Lasso!
Sturm Graz away next for them.Watched them earlier away to Lille.Beat 2-1,looked a bit above Genk.,not saying much, hopefully the home tie helps them.Another away game, then Roma at the Lavvy.

Brendan deserves the credit for developing the Bhoy

I see what you did there 👍
Gunk 0 Genk 1.
Just heard Russell Martins press conference on way home from work.
It was stomach churningly embarrassing, referred to tonight’s opposition as Brugge.

last scottish captains
To be fair Martin’s honestly doesn’t help himself, he watches the same game as me,very little BS
The abuse big Russ is taking on FF is astonishingly vile.
The problem is not the manager, they have done it so many times now.No.The problem is they are not” The peepul” any longer. As long as they are behind us,the next manager will get the same treatment.Cavanagh has no idea what he has taken on.
Have they not suffered enough.
Oh no they haven’t
Oh yes they have..
By the way…Oh is a terrible player..Genk should demand their money back
Given last night’s result, can I just congratulate our board for foresight and money well spent on Oh… he’s finally earned his corn for us 😉
Schadenfreude CSC
OH has just knocked even more badly needed Hun coefficient points off of the table, probably costing Celtic PLC yet another £40+million next season as well with extra qualifiers to be negotiated, by Brendan.
The Old Firm, can`t live with it can`t live without it.
OH what have you done.
They have quite an easy Europa draw but they’re so bad right now that it’s easy to see them not make the cut. Genk are not a good side. If Hearts don’t finish above them, McInnes should be sacked.
Genk created a lot in the wide areas and really got at Sevco, final ball was lacking or Oh missed the opportunities, some glaring including a penalty, they are still a physical team who do best fighting for scraps and keeping the ball alive in the box, Raskin looks for the ball all the time and looks to find space and switch positions, stop him you beat them. Nice to see the sleek it dirty bam diomande finally get a straight red should be at least a 2 game ban.

European football is our benchmark. The ” Old Firm ” should be consigned to the history channel.
Really couldn’t care less about the huns, the only thing that interests me is how results affect us.
HH.
Compulsory Digital ID cards.
We already have numerous ID sources which are constantly required.
This is about control.
At least CQN’ers were warned .
Be wary, be very wary.
Good morning all. Meeting BelmontBrian today for a discussion on philosophy, divinity, theology and the collected recordings of Lieutenant Pigeon.
Mouldy old dough
Good morning CQN.
Just one more day before we see the Celts.
Didn’t watch any live football last night catching only the briefest highlights around pumpkin time.
He is what he is. A big, strong, quick, athletic striker, going through a lean time after a proposed big money move fell through.
I guess many watching it live had a gut feeling he would miss that penalty?
It happens.
Olly Watkins is resilient.
I think he’ll get past this.
Greenpinata – I don’t know what the ins and outs are or what the objections are. I have lived in Spain for 22 years and photo ID is standard here and the rest of the EU (I think). Seems a natural thing to carry for all sorts of reasons. If you need ID when buying something, when stopped for a traffic offence, when in an accident, when you go to the hospital etc etc.
I haven’t spoken to anyone that thinks it infringes on their rights or their freedoms. No doubt in the UK their will be plenty who disagree but it is something the rest of the world uses without any problems.
