O’Connell, early Eboue confirmation expected

198

Our central defence partnership has settled on Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko, you would be hard pushed to choose between them. Kolo Toure, who performed so well early in the season, has been relegated to third choice, while Mikael Lustig can move into the middle if required.

Efe Ambrose will draw his Celtic experience to an end this year, possibly without playing for the club again, while Dedryck Boyata must be desperate to leave Glasgow. Injury prevented the Belgian from attending the European Championships but his international prospects will be non-existent unless he plays regular football.

If Eoghan O’Connell is looking at his first team prospects he might consider himself potentially third choice for next season, but the 21-year-old hasn’t had a sniff of domestic football since August. A substitute cameo performance at the Camp Nou may already be wiped from the player’s memory.

O’Connell is a player I think ha a genuine chance of making the breakthrough. If he was at Dinamo Zagreb right now, we’d probably sign him, but he needs football. Kilmarnock wouldn’t be my first choice destination for him, I’d rather he was tested at a higher level, and frankly, anywhere else but Kilmarnock, but four months in Ayrshire would give him a platform for next season’s qualifiers.

Kouassi Eboue’s agent told the Russian media over the weekend that the player’s work permit could be through as early as today. Spending two weeks with your new team-mates, before a game against lower league opposition, is as near ideal conditions to join a club as Kouassi could hope for.

No doubt they will be “treating” their readers to tales of games between the dead club and various German teams down the decades. Just to keep up the pretense of it being “Rangers”.

  6. If I am reading the Fixtures correctly, Celtic have FIVE of the next six League games at Home.

At least six of our home games this year will be in midweek.

That’s a sair yin for those who can’t travel at those times.

  8. If I can offer some retro CQN chat around amortisation….

According to Celtic’s accounts there’s £16m in tax losses brought forward. CL income this year, full houses, incremental retail income and a potential windfall for VVD will have us sailing very close to a corporation tax burden (shock/horror in the Boardroom).

Unlike windfall profits on sales which are immediate for income and tax, transfer fees paid out do not get tax relief on day one, they are amortised over the contract for accounts and the tax treatment follows similar staging so a transfer splurge wouldn’t address the tax immediately.

It would however be a good time to terminate any contracts such as Nadir, Dedryck, Efe, Kris for example. I’d expect that all to happen in January. But thinking ahead to a potential windfall for Moussa it would be best for Celtic to spend now so that the relief can start to accrue.

But in essence this is potentially an upward spiral. Premium wages and signing on fees, all getting relief as paid, will work for Celtic for a couple of years. If we qualify for the CL we’ll spend what comes in in transfer fees. This could get pretty exciting. I just hope we do manage to stave off suitors for enough time to build teams to compete and then rebuild.

” Brexit will ensure grief for anyone waving a Butchers Apron ” .

In Italy , closet fascists like the Lega Nord and the openly fascist Casa Pound have taken to waving the Butchers Apron at their anti Europe / anti immigration rallies . . Lovely sighting on the news the other night of some Casa Pound activists wearing Butchers Apron Tshirts with the image of Nick Griffin on them hurling racist abuse outside a temporary refuge for Syrian refugees in Torino.

Was talking to a friend (Timaloy) about the Bhoys and he tells me his son is decorating his young boys room.He then relates a story about the Fraserburgh disaster,a piece of memorabilia from that game is to be included on the wall of this little guys room.Celtic won 7-0 a week before the European final V feyenoord the mate tells me,guess what? on that day,Fraserburgh match, a snippet of info from 28 April 1970 in the paper, the Huns put Baxter, provan and Sorensen up for free and persson on the transfer list,a cost cutting exercise they say, three years after big ears arrived at Celtic Park and one week before we tried to land it again! Things you learn having a chat ’bout the Bhoys.

Doubt very much if young Eoghan is good enough to play for Dinamo Zagreb in the first place. Kilmarnock will test him first and foremost as a defender, and that is what he needs at this point in his career. I’m pretty sure he has a good future but not sure if that will be in a Brendan Rodgers Celtic team.

That reminds me of a comment from Alex Ferguson when they signed Cole from,erm,Newcastle-totally unintended pun.

£7m was considered a bit extreme,to say the least.
